Question Why is my pc constantly uploading for no reason?!?! ( PCMech Forums Networking and Internet Connections )

Why is my pc constantly uploading for no reason?!?!

When i connect to the internet, looking at the connection status window my PC uploads very quickly up 5megs in the 1st 10minutes and continues at that rate until d/c! This has only started to happen recently, and im a bit worried about what it could be.

Im using WinXP pro,
56k dialup
no noticable ad-ware but a few popups generated internally
Antivirus returns nothing
I also tried running with minimal services and resources, yet it still uploads.
There is no kazaa or anything running in the background

Another possible concequence of this same problem is that when I connect my pages often dont load, messenger fails to sign in, and outlook cant check my mails. Its not through a time-out procedure its as if its not connected. I disconnect and try again a few times and then it will work.

Anyone got any ideas please help me out!

Why is my pc constantly uploading for no reason?!?!

You obviously have some spyware/malware on your machine. Have you installed a firewall like ZoneAlarm and let it prompt you when an application tries to connect to the Internet? It should be apparent which one is the culpirt.

I'd get SpyBot Search-N-Destroy and AdAware and run them both to see what they turn up.

Have you ran Spybot or Adaware to check for adware? If not, try downloading and running Spybot. http://www.safer-networking.org/

doesnt he mean packets? If your talking about the icon that looks like 2 terminals that registers packets not data uploaded.Your PC will be sending packets its not uploading.

Every time you look at a webpage it sends packet to request information if a packet is corrupted then your pc has to send another packet to ask for that to be resent hence some times the upload is higher than the download.

ahhh, so im guessing that could be a result of my webpages and applications such as outlook failing. its re-sending packets?

I don't know how to fix it but it seems selective pages work and others dont, and it wont check emails. Ive removed all spy/ad ware with the spybot program which was useful thanks. My security settings havent changed but its since all the spyware started ive had this problem

certain applications, like outlook and IMs, send out packets to see if there is anything out there for them and they make up a certin amount of the background chatter that occurs on a network or internet connection.
