Question Universal BootLoader Tool - Flash ANY valid rom to ANY iPAQ. ( Brighthand.com Smartphone and PDA Discussion Forums iPAQ hx4700 series )

Universal BootLoader Tool - Flash ANY valid rom to ANY iPAQ.

iPAQ stuck in a bootloader loop?
Can't flash using HP's tool due to wrong version no. or corrupted rom?
You're in luck. This is the Universal BootLoader Tool.
--

This new version should be used instead of the hx4700 bootloader or the old universal bootloader, It's far superior.
It is a build on the Universal BootLoader,
It accepts servicepack/.exe files, aswell as .rar, .zip, .cab, .nbf, and .nb0 files.

What has changed since the last Universal BootLoader version:

Now supports flashing under Windows Vista.
A dialog box will prompt you to install them automatically if it detects you are running vista.

"Auto-find header length" is now the default option.
-In the past I only added this as a method that was still being tested, But recently I've looked at alot of different iPAQ roms,
and found that all the headers would work using this method.
this means there is no longer a need for the BootLoader launcher too.
you should be able to use this for all iPAQ's without setting the header length or any other manual options.

Warns if there are spaces in the nbf file path and the temporary directory of the archive's extracted nbf, then exits.
-There were reasons i didn't do this before. But too many people forget about removing the spaces.

Fixed the UltraEdit Associations screen popping up.
-Sorry guys, I didn't realize this was happening until i uninstalled UE.

Default directory is up one level.

Download: BootLoader.exe

How to use:
Put your device in bootloader mode by pressing ITASK+CONTACTS+RESET, and put it in the sync cradle.
Select an .nbf/.nb0/zip/rar/exe/servicepack file, and let it do the rest.

Note: The combination of keys to put the device in bootloader mode can be different for some devices. google for your device if the above one doesn't work.
e.g. For the iPAQ HX2000, You press ITASK+CONTACTS+RESET, and you will see "USB CONNECTED". Then you press the CALENDAR button for 2-4 seconds, and it will change to "USB".

Notes:
Make sure the .nbf filepath you select does not contain spaces or it will warn you and exit.
e.g. C:\some folder\wm5 os.nbf << WRONG
C:\some_folder\wm5_os.nbf << CORRECT
If you are extracting the .nbf from an archive, the path to the bootloader application must also have no spaces, or it will warn you and exit.
e.g. C:\Boot Loader\Boot Loader.exe << WRONG
C:\Boot_Loader\BootLoader.exe << CORRECT

If using Windows Vista, You will need to install these drivers: Windows Vista VS Flashing Firmware or Radio ROMs! - xda-developers
(you won't need to kill any processes as mentioned in that thread though, as my bootloader will do that automatically)

Custom settings:
You can customize settings in the bootloader by creating a settings.ini file in the same folder as bootloader.exe.
This example shows the options available in the ini configuration file and how they work-

[hexedit]
bytes = 500 << this specifies you want to remove 500 bytes from the nbf file. (default = null)
nbf = C:\CE_OS.nbf << this specifies an absolute file path to an nbf file. if specified it will skip the inital selection screen and use this file. (default = null)
findheader = 1 << if set to 0, it will use the 'bytes' setting. if set to 1, it will search the nbf's header to find where the nb0 image begins. (default = 1)
[mtty]
port = \\.\WCEUSBSH001 << specifies the port setting to use in mtty. (default = \\.\WCEUSBSH001)

BETA Apps:
What todo: If you have recently flashed your iPAQ so you're willing to flash it again to help out,
Please download the beta app, use it normally and perform a full flash,
and note down how the new features do/don't work. then make a new post here about it.
You won't risk damaging your iPAQ any more than with the stable bootloader versions. Nothing has been changed in the method of which it is flashed.

BootLoader with GUI interface -
BootLoader_GUI.exe

It includes a GUI showing the percentage of the rom transferred instead of the mtty console.
PLEASE test this. I'm looking for people who've recently flashed and don't mind flashing their rom again to help with this.
It's beta, but you won't risk flashing your iPAQ in a wrong way or anything, it's only new gui features, but they need the terminal of a working iPAQ to test it.
Currently the "Show/Hide Terminal Window" button does not work so don't worry about that.
But what should work is everything being done in the background with only the GUI window showing the entire time,
it should update you on the status of what it's doing,
and, most importantly, should tell you the percentage of the rom transferred to the device, accurately, and show a dialog after the rom has been flashed.

--Update, 8 July: A brighthand user has tested this through 2 full flashes and found no problems, and the 'percentage of rom flashed' function has worked.
--Update, 8 July: Just updated the GUI version. added alot of manual checks of the terminal to check for errors and warn you, and also to make sure the rom has definitely been flashed right.

BootLoader with possible spaces fix (no gui) -
BootLoader_Spaces_Fix.exe

This may possibly be a fix for having spaces in the filepath.
It uses short names (AKA DOS names) to replace the spaces.
Please test and report back here if you've been able to upload a file with spaces in it.
A copy of the terminal log for this one would be good too.

Previous version (not recommended):
Up until recently there has only been a HX4700 bootloader that was stable, making it the most used.
This has changed now, but if you would like to check out the thread, it's here:

Just to let you know I have used your excellent "BootLoader with GUI interface" with no problems for HX4700 and WM6 and WM5. Excellent tool that makes ROM update very simple.

Should be just the win os.
yeah you should get yourself a copy of the AKU 3.5.2 rom.
there is a thread for installing it at brighthand. just replace the english rom with your russian one.

Universal BootLoader Tool - Flash ANY valid rom to ANY iPAQ.

thanks chrismrulz.
Very encouraging what you wrote. On your word (he he....) I'll try a few variants of the general theme. meanwhile, I have had time to study this forum in more detail and found the Russian version of Win5; I think I'll try that, first. My Win5 is also veeery slow. (Isn't it amzing what bad programmers can do with a super piece of hardware?!) I was seriously considering going back to Win2003 when I stumbled over the Russian version.
One other question: I think I read somewhere that there is in the hx4700: BIOS, firmware, and a Win OS. Is that so? What is changed, then, by the Russian version? Only the OS; or the BIOS, firmware, and OS? (Just to let me understand better...).

Welcome to brighthand and hx4700's vtristram
Theoretically yes, although I've never tried with other languages myself.
I have had someone use the bootloader to go from a french to an english rom though.

The only other thing i can reassure you with is,
I've flashed my device using my tool many times in different ways, even taking the device out while it's flashing,
And there has never been a time where I've been unable to just flash it again if i use my tool.

I'm pretty sure the bootloader terminal on the device can't even be touched using my tool. So no matter what rom you flash, it shouldn't be able to muck anything up.
Don't call me on that though.. I'm about 80% sure.

If you're using HP's official hruu.exe to flash after this then you need to be careful of what you flash though, as it always checks and compares the version you have.
If you use mine after though.. pretty sure there shouldn't ever be any problems no matter what rom you've had on previously.

IMO it's worth a shot, but it's still your choice.

BTW: I have had quite a lot of PDA's and smartphones in my life including the first Palm; I like my HX4700, it's sleek, it's fast, it has a super high-res screen (although no real VGA...), and it's lightweight! What more do I need??!!

thanks to holvoetn for allowing another bootloader thread and locking the other one.
it's important that this is a new thread so people don't use the old hx4700 one.
the hx4700 bootloader thread will be locked but you can still view the thread, as the posts were very useful and there were over 23 thousand views.

Thank you for the Bootloader (BootLoader_GUI.exe), it is a lifesaver.
But, after executing the program, it will only load 95%. Nevertheless, after reseting, my ipak works almost fine, until it crashes again. So I have to repeat the operation. Would you please advice what am I doing wrong?
The message "\\.\WCEUSBSSH001 Request record 60 seconds time out" appears.

Your bootloader saved my day!! It worked great. hx4705 iPAQ. Don't waste your time with WM5. It freezes and has to be rebooted. Runs slow. Do not install programs to system, only to SD or CF cards. Why doesn't HP offer the bootloader? $$$???

Chris,
A question about the bootloader tool...
While my 4700 is in the ppctechs hospital, I am back to using my old 4150. There are some updates I would like to make to its ROM (if I can find a way to cook the old ROM), so was wondering if your tool works with this device?

It's made to work on all iPAQs. But I haven't tested every iPAQ so far so I can't say.
Theoretically they should all work the same except for the combination of key presses to put it in bootloader mode though.
If it was me I'd google for the buttons to put it in bootloader mode and give it a try.

I need some help! The installation of the Vista driver is not working. When I double click on wceusbsh.inf, I get a messahe that the driver is not a 64bits and, thus, it will not install the driver. Where can I get that driver? My computer has Ultimate 64 and AMD 64. Any help will be profoundly appreciated! With anticipated gratitude,

sorry. didn't think i had the 64bit drivers. i just took a wild stab.
i'm working on finding the right drivers.
in the meantime you can try googling for them yourself (vista rom 64bit drivers),
or try these: Vista_64.zip
you'll need to run the original bootloader.exe so it extracts the /BootLoader folder,
then extract the contents of that zip file to /BootLoader/Vista_Drivers_64,
then run the bootloader.exe inside the /BootLoader folder.
you may also need to disable the 64bit driver signing requirements.

sorry if that is hard to do, i don't have a 64bit OS so i haven't been able to do this myself.

Hey guys, just updated all bootloader versions.
They now all support flashing under Windows Vista.
If it detects you are running vista, it will prompt you to install the special drivers automatically.
It will disable the 'allow usb connections' setting, then detect your hardware and install the bootloader-compatible vista drivers, then enable usb connections again.

if you would like to use this with other bootloader's like the original HP one,
you can use this stand-alone executable that installs them: Vista_Drivers.exe

providing you have the corresponding rom for it.

only thing that was different for one of them was the combination of keys to put it in bootloader mode cos it was an old one.

I am sure that Bootloader is a fine tool, however...
At the moment I am trying to update my HX4700 with WM6 from a Vista PC.
Everything looks well (drivers installed automatically) but now the Bootloader shows 0% Complete for half an hour. The HX4700 shows a dark screen with on top USB, the HP logo in the middle and V1.01 at the bottom.
The Show/Hide Terminal Window button does nothing.
In Task Manager I can see mtty11a is running. CPU usage 0%.
EventViewer shows an error from source WcesComm:
"Windows Mobile-based device failed to connect due to Start USB Connection (0x80004005) failure"
What do I do wrong?

you can definitely install the WM6 OS.
but i am almost 100% sure you won't be able to do it over bluetooth.

just download the BootLoader.exe and run it as instructed in this thread: http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=246529

you don't need to install the vista_drivers.exe separately.
that was only an executable for people who choose to use another bootloader.
once you run my bootloader (the latest version), it will detect if you are running vista and prompt you to install the drivers automatically.
then continue to the bootloading.

make sure it's in bootloader mode (press ITASK+CONTACTS+RESET) before running the bootloader,

Unfortunately, this tool does not seem to work on my rw6828. I assume it's a problem with mtty. I'm trying to work out exactly what's wrong and then fix it, although without any success so far.

The alternative is to crack hpruu to circumvent the version checking stuff, but that seems tricky.

I cannot but express how grateful I am for all the help you have given all of us! I downloaded the drivers and I will install them over the weekend. Two issues before i close this note. Can I use a Bluetooth connection instead of USB to install the drivers and the ROM WM6 OS. My PDA appears as connected but the bootloader is not seeing it. I cannot make the USB to work because the insructions call for disabling it! any help is welcome! Where can I send you a donation?

oooHawk000,

This also happened to me. I had loaded the version 4 of WM6 but there were too many time lags so decided to revert back to Fix3.0.

I tried it here at work on an xp machine and got very dubious results to say the least i.e. it just didn't work. So tried again last night at home on my Vista machine and it worked. Took significantly longer than on an xp but it did work. When the notice came up about the hardware ID I just ignored it and the system just kept on working.

Did you get the question about loading the Vista drivers during the process?

make sure you do EXACTLY as Chris has said in his instructions and just go for it.

Good luck.

Right before it says "Erase Failed", it does pause for about 30 seconds and waits (I suspect for the erase...which subsequently fails), and prevents the ROM upgrade from continuing.

What would be causing this error? What can I do about it? I have the power supply connected to the cradle so it has full power when erasing/programming.

I have a screenshot of the above which I can upload, though all the information is included in the text above.

Thanks for your help!

Wow, its been a while (2004) since I was on here, at any rate. I have an old ipaq 22xx model that was "bricked" some time ago by a failed upgrade attempt.

I finally got a chance to look at it, and the two leds, power and bluetooth, are stuck in "on" mode and I can't get it into bootloader mode and I've tried every button/reset combo I've read.

Any trick to getting it back into bootloader mode.

And, if I get that done, does anyone know if these are the correct files/rom for this version:

E1_Upgrade_ROM_v1_00_00_L_SIGNED.nbf
hx2000_1.10.09_ENG.nbf

Hi Chris,

I've recently noticed this thread and the "WM6 ROM for The Hx4700" thread -- I am hoping to make my hx4700 usable again after the WM5 disaster from HP.

I have downloaded your BootLoader and the GUI version also. I also have the latest WM6 ROM from the appropriate Brighthand thread. I've read the pages in that thread as to the procedure: Enter boot mode (HP logo in the middle, v1.01 at the bottom), connect PDA to cradle, using USB port on laptop (not USB hub), and then start your Bootloader, and select the .rar file.

Everything was off to a great start: I saw the *|*|*|*|*| on the screen.

After a few minutes a continuous stream of text started appearing.
It was probably commands to program the hx4700 and looked something like:

USB>38shglis0Aldf3ianglDAls39a ("random" stuff)

Then error and say "unrecognized command" and print some helpful comments like, "press h for help". It was hard to see what was happening --- the text was continuously scrolling, very fast.

After perhaps 1 min of scrolling text, it stopped with an error that mentions a 60 second timeout: \\.\WCEUSBH001 Request record 60 seconds time out. I decided to shut things down and restart again, this time using your GUI bootloader.

This time, I could not see the terminal window, but had confirmation of the process. It stayed at 15% done for a while, then gave the same error above (timeout) --- I have a screenshot, but unfortunately I can't post it here.

It seems as though the hx4700 might have stopped responding...or did something inappropriate which caused the ROM transfer to mess up.

I am using a Windows XP2 laptop, with ActiveSync 4.5 installed.

Also, I have the 128MB RAM upgrade from Pocket PC Techs.

I hope there is some solution to this problem so I can use my PDA once again!

Thanks,
Bryce

Thanks,
Bryce
i think ill need to see the screenshot. and possibly a log of the text in the terminal window.
just host the screenshot on imageshack.us then post the link to it here.

I also have a 614c, actually its a 612c (Same thing). I have tried to use Universal BootLoader Tool to flash the diskimage_ver.nb0 to my 612c but didn't work. All it did was show the words (CLIENT CLIENT) written inside the MultiTTY Rom Update utility!

I have used the following to create the diskimage_ver.nb0

pdocread -l
pdocread -t
pdocread 0x0 0x5000000 diskimage_Ver.nb0

I would like to know please how I can restore diskimage_Ver.nb0
back to the PDA?

I have the following 3 questions, I hope someone could answer:

1- can I use pdocwrite.exe safely to write that file back to my pda? if so, then what are the exact parameters I should use to write it back properlly?

2- Can I rename diskimage_Ver.nb0 to flash.dio and put it into an SD Card and boot from it to flash?

3- If I rename diskimage_Ver.nb0 to FLASH.NBF (not flash.dio) can I use the HP update utility to update the flash without using an SD Card?

can someone please help.

Thanks

Hello there to all members!
Im quite new to this. So here my answer. is there any chance to get an h5555 upgraded to wm5, wm6 or wm6.1? Any chance?

Thanks alot
Raziel

Thanks for that great Site!

Thats right. But as for me it would be interresting to learn how roms are cooked (in my case the h5555 would be a testobject, althogh i know it would be some kind of "downgrading"). Do you know some information, where to start, or where i can learn howto?

Possibly. However, I wouldn't expect it to happen. Besides the fact that upgrading older units to WM5 and above usually results in poorer performance than devices built for it, creating a ROM image takes some time and effort, and it's unlikely that one of the ROM "cookers" out there would go to the trouble for such an old device.

Hi!
Thanks for the response. But it might be theoreticaly possible?

Welcome to Brighthand, Raziel. As far as I'm aware, nobody has ever produced a WM5 or newer ROM for the h5555.

The place to be in terms of ROM cooking and information is XDA-Developers.com. They mostly focus on HTC-built Windows Mobile phones, but there's a fair amount of news and research going on with a whole variety of devices.

I just have bought a HP IPAQ 614c. Can I use this tool to flash diskimage_ver.nb0 to 614c?

Many thanks!

Fix 4 comes with instructions for isntalling from SD card. I don't know how well it works but you might investigate that avenue as well.
