Question Who makes good, quiet case fans? ( 2CPU.com Discussion Forums Cases, Power and Modifications )

Who makes good, quiet case fans?

I have a few machines here that I would like to put to some use. Seeing as how my desk sits mere feet from my TV, I can't even power them on for fear of the jet-engine-like noise drowning-out the sound from the TV (and making ears bleed in the process).

So... I am in need of some nice, quiet case fans in 80mm, 92mm and 120mm. The quieter the better, but I don't know that I am willing to spend TOO much for fans. I've seen some that look to be silent, but at $17-20 each, they'll blow the budget quickly.

yate loon makes the nexus fans. the 120mm are pretty quiet and cheap.

The standard ones are the Panasonic Panaflo fans. For silent applications usually you have to undervolt them, but overall they are quite good. Inexpensive, too, and available in 80, 92 and 120 mm.

If you REALLY want to get into this, see silentpcreview.com.

Both the above suggestions are good. Beware of Vantec Stealth fans - although fairly quiet, they are massively overspecced - that is, they look quieter on paper than many other fans, but the reality doesn't match the specs.

There are many quiet fans makers out there. But there is one more consideration - vibration. I suggest you also look at rubber bolt dampeners for dampening the vibration, which can cause noise by using your case as a diaphram. This type of noise to me, is as irritating as a whining high pitched fan motor. As it is inconsistent (like air tubulence), it really catches my attention through low humming rhythms.

Fans that I have tried and very good are Scythe, Zalman, Noiseblocker and Acoustic Fan. But the true full flexibility will come from a $20 rheobus fan controller. This will allow you to adjust the fans from 7V to 12V, bringing whatever existing/future fans to minimal speeds during winter and pump it up a little during summer.

I can second the recommendations on the Scythe and Yate Loon/Nexus 120mm fans. Another possibility are the Mechtronics 120mm's. They're not quite as good as the Scythe's or Yate Loon's, but they are cheaper and quiet enough for most people.

I highly recomend: http://www.quietpcusa.com/fan.html for quiet products. Keep us in-the-loop.

I must have always gotten lemons when I purchased Panaflos. I've never heard a quiet one. They all have a distinct whine when undervolted. Not as bad as coil whine or a bad CRT, but annoying none the less.

Panaflos are quiet in relative of their speeds against other makes, but not in the catergory of one of those silent fans that runs at 800-1200 rpm by default. Panaflos can offer better performance to noise ratio very well, at around 1600rpm to 2400rpm (80mm version). If you run them at 7V you will get a 'silent' Panaflo like the rest of the silent branded bunch.

I will second that too.. Vantec Stealth fans are not quiet at all with clicky bearing sounds.
