Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I go stay with family every summer on Oahu, Hawaii. It is a very small room with one small window and very little circulation (basically, it was a storage room turned bedroom.) The one thing I struggle with is how humid it is over there in comparison to the Bay Area, California where I live. As this will be my first summer with my PS3 there in the incredibly humid room, I'm worried about the PS3 overheating. For your information, the average summer temperature there is 80-85 degrees during the day and 70-80% humidity.
The reason why I'm asking is that I have a Sony Viao laptop that is fine over here in the Bay, but whenever I bring back over there, it can't handle the humidity and the vent/fan gets scalding hot to the touch. I'm worried that the PS3 will be the same; i.e. fine here in the Bay but wouldn't be able to handle the humidity.
I'm asking anyone that has a PS3 in Hawaii, or anywhere that is similar in temperature and humidity (Florida from what I hear) how their PS3 heating/overheating situation is.

hey bra go da kine home depot and go buy one ac cuz i stay in waipo and its hot during the day. i no even use my ac cuz i no more money for electric. lol.. You'll be fine as long as you have adequate ventilation. If its too hot, and your PS3 is overheating, your PS3 will let you know.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
you guys are saying exactly what I've found out/am saying! I'm so happy. Also, I agree wit Hobo9890, I'm happy and surprised to see how many locals are on da board.
I do not think I need to buy an intercooler because I would think that if it's really overheating, it'd be loud as a Mo' Fo', but it's real silent even though it's hot to the touch. Also, even a lot of locals here have a PS3 and not having problems, as I stated before, I have the additional problem of keeping this ps3 in a storage room turned small bedroom with very weak circulation added with our average temps and humidity, I was worried. But not anymore.
Hope this helps someone who is worried about ps3 overheating in humidity. As you can see through my experience as well as all the people who've contributed to this thread, the ps3 can stand through a lot of heat.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I just wanted to give an update to anyone interested in the whole ps3 heating/overheating issue, lack thereof, and heating specifically in humid areas like that of the islands of Hawaii.
I've been here 3 days. I keep my ps3 on the floor with the flat side next to a tv stand. For the last 3 nights, I've had it running Folding@home all night (still too concerned and scared to have it running during the day in such a small poorly ventilated room/spot) and I've played online games like Rub a Dub as well as real games like Fight Night Round 3.
Results: After a whole night of folding or playing Fight Night Round 3 for two hours, I feel that the vents are actually almost scalding hot to the touch. What I find very interesting and very amazing is that even though it may be burning hot to the touch, the sounds of the fan or the ps3 are still nearly non-existant. That is very impressive and, in my opinion, shows testiment to PS3, it's quality build, and its supposed heating issues and lack thereof.
If you wanna know the temperatures in the room or here on the islands, scroll up the thread as it's been posted somewhere up there. Also, I've had this PS3 since Christmas.
Also, I just wanted to thank all those who contributed to this thread. A special thanks goes to those who are actually on the islands as well as islands with similar environment.
Me bringing my PS3 here was a great decision that you guys helped me make and I do not regret it. I now am able to enjoy all those things the PS3 has to offer on my spare time instead of wishing I could've but left it...Thanks again!

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I live on Oahu and I'm having no problems. The humidity is pretty bad right now, but it's getting better. I say if you have a fan or 2, you should be more than fine. Just open that one window turn the fans on and enjoy your PS3, and then if you don't want to bring your PS3 down, you are welcome to come play on mine.

There's recorded incidents that people have gotten 3rd degree burns on their thighs from having a laptop there an extended amount of time (don't ask me how it's possible) - but the laptop doesn't neccessarily take damage.
Virtually all functional hardware will shut itself off before it gets warm enough to damage any components - so just turn it on, play and have fun, and if it turns itself off you know it's too warm.
(The Xbox has known issues and I can understand your worry from that - but the PS3 does not)

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I live in Hilo so the humidity is higher than Oahu. Plus it is getting really hot during the day. I noticed that as long as my ps3 is not surrouned by anything meaning nothing within at leat 6 inches and not in some cabinet then it should be fine. I left mine on all day running folding@home while it was hitting the mid 90's. And my house has no airconditioning what so ever. Just 2 fans. Yeah plantation style home.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Thanks to all of you who answered my question! Especially those who actually live on da islands cuz that directly answers my question cuz that's exactly the environment I would be in. If you locals were wonderin, I'm up in Waipahu. It's amazing that my PS3 could survive in such heat/humidity/environments! I was just worried cuz my laptop got extremely scalding hot and it took me by surprise the difference in heat management between the two places.
To astaroth_pod, so you're saying that even if it is scalding burn to the touch hot, I shouldn't be worried because it's not a biological thing, it's mechanical?
To BadAndy, I'm just curious as to why you think the thread title is funny? Can't think of any other way of asking the question...
To all of you who say forget the PS3 and enjoy da hawaiian sun, thanks for the advice but when you've been in that environment day in and day out doing the same stuff over and over, after a while you would like to take a break and just enjoy your "600 dollar investment" cuz even though it may not be as fun as surfing or enjoying the sights and weather and stuff to do, the PS3 is still real fun.
Again, thank you all who posted up and answered my question. It just shows the awesomeness that is the PS3 and it's heating/overheating issues or lack thereof (especially compared to the 360). I'm gonna rep+ all of you who answered so I better get going...got some work ahead of me. Thanks again!

|
|
Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
the only issue there could be would be the humidity....but even then it should be fine....you would be shocked to see what kind of temps are considered "normal" in say any sort of laptop computer...your PS3 can handle the temperature no problem...

I live in Bermuda and know all about waking up soaking wet from sweat. I have had my PS3 since january and all is fine. Will have to wait and see about the summer though. It should be alright though I guess. I have bigger problems trying to keep my fish tanks cool. Our humidity is at 100% at times.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Does condensation build on the inside of your windows? If not, then your PS3 should probably be fine. If it does, then I'd put the PS3 back in its box and have a second unwrapping day after a Hawaiin vacation

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I live on Oahu and I've had my PS3 since launch. My friends and I sometimes play RFOM for hours at a time and instead of turning it off, I would run F@H for days. No problems at all. Just don't put it in the direct sun and you should be fine.
|

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Man, no offense but if you are spending the summer in Hawaii then you can find better things to do than play PS3. Leave it and by the time you get back from vaction there will be a bunch of great games and even more on the way.

|
Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Man that's so cool, that the Playstation 3 can stand all this heat, but yeah it does have a cool intercooler,so you should be able to play it there dude

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
The PS3 is built to work in environments where people live.
Even if it gets scaldingly hot, it's not a biological piece of hardware - and such have completely different heat tolerances than you.
The NVidia GPU's I've tested work excellently up to at least 130C.
Stopp worrying about heat and use the PS3

i dont think so, if i remember correctly the ppl who took apart the ps3 laughed at the big fan but then was amazed at how the cooling was engineered, real innovation used to supress heat. Now i dont mean to be a fanboy but: hot in the world + xbox360 = 3 red rings of death. I would give it a try in hawaii but i would definitly keep the area that the ps3 is resting on well ventilated.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I live in hawaii on Oahu, and I've had the PS3 since last year. I've used it constantly, and have run the standford folding program numerous times. I have had absolutely no problems with it. Can't say the same for my roommates 360 though, it red ringed about a month ago. I fixed it for him using the towel trick, now he has an intercooler attached to the 360 to try/hope it doesn't break down again...for the PS3, this month is when it all begins. The good games start with The Darkness, then RB6, then Ninja Gaiden,... This summer is going to be good for you, with a PS3, the surf, and island girls. Where else are you gonna have all 3 things at your finger tips?

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
To cruzader, Jabjabs, and StateofMind, I just wanted to thank you guys cuz that was exactly the kind of information I was asking for...
To EncoreEncore, well...I've been staying the whole summer in Hawaii for years now and although there is so many things to do there that wouldn't be as enjoyable or available in other areas as well as my hometown, you have to admit that there are times where you get tired and juss wanna play sum video games. I'm sure there are plenty of unique things to do or see where you live, but because it's your home and you've lived there, I'm betting you probably done everything there is to do extensively and would still enjoy playing ps3 endlessly, just imo...but you are right...it's friggen awesome there!
Also, even though there are places with higher fahrenheit, keep in mind that with a simple high fahrenheit temperature, being in the shade or room or dark place can significantly lower the temperature, but in very humid places (or at least Hawaii in the summer), like the song says, "it's 96 degrees in the shade..." (for anyone that listens to reggae)...
Thanks for the input!

Mine's doing fine in a very poorly air-conditioned room in Southern Louisiana.
|
|
Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Put it this way, if my 360 and Ps3 could handle 40+ Centigrade (105 F) days down here for several hours a day with no air conditioning and not complain one bit, yours should be fine. These things can take it.

Assuming you have a closed room, you could get a cheap room dehumidifier.
My cousin has a PS3 in the Philippines. I assume the conditions there are about equal, and he hasn't had any problems.

I'd be more worried about your health. I mean wilth all the heat the PS3 puts off, in a room like that with no air you're likely to cook yourself.
|
|
Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
Rezero, trust me...it sucks THAT bad...you take a nap, and wake up like your suffocating and all wet with sweat. The good news is that there is a newly installed window AC to the room to keep it from getting that bad again. Problem is that it's not a great AC and doubtfully keep it cool enough for a PS3. But it is good enough to not worry about health. If it comes down to being a real bad problem, i'm thinking of getting that Pelican Air Flo gadget. But I want to see how other PS3's are fairing in that kind of environment first. But thanks guys for your input!

Turn the PS3 on it's side. Heat rises, and it's common knowledge in the computer world that a vent on the top (Blow hole) is one of the best possible vents to add in. Luckily, if the PS3 is on it's side it does have a top Vent.

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
It seems alot of people don't get that the fan speed, noise level or casing temperature has nothing to do with overheating.
It could sound like a jet engine (or xbox) and burn your fingers to cinders if you touched it - if it's still running then it hasn't overheated.
Overheated means too hot to operate - hence overheated.
As I mentioned before, metal, plastic and circuits do not have the same limits as human flesh or eardrums!
|
|
Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I'm not surprised that the PS3 could handle the heat. It's well known that the PS3 can be left folding for days in temperatures up to 120 degrees. There was a youtube video ( but I lost the link ) of it being tested. I am, however, surprised it could take the humidity.

I'm real protective of my ps3 as well, hence this whole thread being started because of paranoia. But apparently, through other people's experience as well as my own, the ps3 is a monster that can stand a helluva lot more than we thought it could and it should be alright. If anything, I was able to backup everything on an external hard drive. Can you believe that backuping up all of the PS3 is 13 GBs?!?!?!

Will my PS3 overheat in Hawaii
I'll give another report for Southwest Louisiana.
Earlier this month a freak hailstorm came through and knocked out a good portion of this city's power, including the power to my house. 24 hours later with absolutely no power except for an unreliable backup generator, the in house temperatures reached the lower 90?, and the humidity was bad as some of the rain was still evaporating, in addition to the typically bad humidity of Southern Louisiana.
Once I had a stable current of electricity I started up F@H on my PS3, as it was still too hot to start up any other electronics except for the monitor since it was needed for the time being. No problems at all in its operation.
In short: the PS3 is no weakling, it can take the heat and then some. It is not a pansy like the 360 is.
