First install a Frontend: Zoomplayer, Media Player Classic, Theatertek.

Second, install Avisynth.exe, FFDshow, Reclock, Spdifer, Put the plugins where they go.

Third, Setup the software as shown below.
You need to setup either ffdshow audio or spdifer.
You need to setup reclock if you use xp.
You need to setup ffdshow video using one of the configurations I made.
You need to configure the frontend as shown below, you only need one frontend.

Pictures.
Zoomplayer Pro

Theatertek

Media Player Classic

Reclock

FFDshow Audio

Spdifer (For DTS and AC3)

\\\\\ FFDshow configuration options.
A note about Limitedsharpenfaster.
Put the Removegrain.dll/Repair.dll 0.9 in the plugin folder first, then the 1.0 version and let it copy over the 0.9 version.

If you plan on using MT, you will need to replace the avisynth.dll in your %systemroot%\windows\system32 directory with the one from MT.zip.
And put mt.dll into the avisynth plugins folder.

________ Deinterlacing________

It's best to not use ffdshow for movies if you need deinterlacing.
Use powerdvd instead. Set it to pixel adaptive deinterlacing.
Start a new thread asking how to set it up.
I use a ati 2600xt, and I set up catalyst like this.
I don't use nvidia, so I don't know how to set that up.

Basic quality: checked, slider to far right, pulldown checked.

I set denoise to zero and checked denoise.
In 8.3 drivers, if I do not do this, with deinterlacing set up like this, I get bad denoising, it's too strong and a lot of detail is lost as a result.

In powerdvd, I set it to pixel adaptive deinterlacing, by unchecking ati hw acceleration, doing this, then rechecking hw acceleration after it's been set.

________ Theatertek and FFDshow ________

Theatertek uses the Nvidia video codec, so the FFDshow Mpeg2 dvd codec should be unchecked.
The FFDshow video codec has buffering tweaks that allow the main menu not to freeze in a black screen.

Since the tt codec does not have this tweak, so you need to move the mouse over the menu choices like play and extras.
It might take a few seconds of moving the mouse over the screen, or the remote to switch over the menu choices.

The TT codec doesn't have buffering.

Here's a nice code that doesn't use buffering, so it doesn't have menus blacked out.

I am running a Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache and was kind of suprised that seesaw was using 100% cpu.

A newbie question here. My PC is connected with an onkyo 605 via the SPDIF optical out from the mainboard. This will send the correct signal from the DVD to my receiver right?

Sorry but im really new to all this stuff.

thegixxer

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

duradrinx,

I think integrated graphics don't work well with Seesaw.

thegixxer,

If you use spdifer then it should be easy.
I haven't tried with TT though.
I dunno, but TT is easy to configure Audio, so you can do it.

Anybody has a version of MT working with the new Avisynth 2.5.8 Alpha 2 ?

Moa

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

NM, ZP wasn't setup correctly

I did search and I am sure this has been asked before.

Can 4:3 be stretched automatically through FFdshow?

I thought the resize settings would take care of this. Or could it be something in ZP preventing it if that is true?

duradrinx

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

I haven't read through the whole thread but I just have few quick questions...
1) What does LSF stands for ?
2) What's the difference between Basic, LSF1 and LSF2 ? Will each give me different PQ ?

ajamils

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

I upgraded to Zoom Player 6.2 so I could try EVR. Switching to EVR causes a Smart Play error. Could there be something in my ffdshow configuration that is incompatible with EVR?

sync

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

duradrinx,

I updated the zp guide.
Look at it for resize options.

ajamils,

LSF stands for a avsi plugin Did?e made.
It satnds for Limited Sharpen Faster

The Difference between lsf 1 and 2 is color.
LSF 2 has better color.
They are all different than each other.
But it doesn't mean one is better than the other.
The best configuration is the one you like.

sync,

I couldn't get that error.
I'm using xp mce and the .net 3 from windows update.

I updated the ffdshow audio guide and zp guide today.
The sw package has the new tweaks.

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Hi guys!

I have a question about how to play movies with differents resolutions without sometimes knowing the resolution?

Ex:

I watch many different type of qualities, Xvid, DVD or HD-material (TV Series 1280 x 720 .mkv also full HD) and often there is a .nfo file where it says the resolution of the movie for example RESOLUTiON:........1920 x 800.

Then i put that resoultion in ffdShow and I have the TVs resolution to 1920 x 1080.

But do I have to change this everytime I watch a movie from my HTPC?
Or is there a program that can "feel" the resoulution of the movie and change in ffdshow or something?
Is there a program to recognize the resolution of a movie?

Hope someone can explain how this is done, I guess I'm not the only one..

Benji_9

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Benji_9,

The Profiles in FFDshow is supposed to be able to do that stuff.
But I dunno how to use Profiles.

Thanks for the explaination but now i'm even more confused...... if all the three methods produce equal quality then why would someone use L2 or L1 when same PQ can be achieved with basic (and easy) configuration ?

I would like to know this too because I have a variety of media that I would like to put in my HTPC and I do not like the idea of changing configuration everytime I want to watch a movie/tv show.

ajamils

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

ajamils,

Some people don't like sharpening.
So they just resize.

Other people prefer LSF over Seesaw.
Other people prefer Seesaw over LSF.

The black or brightness in LSF 2 looks better than the brightness in LSF 1 or Seesaw to my eye on my monitor.

The Seesaw 2 has more detail than any other config, and the picture is better than Seesaw.
But it takes too much cpu to be used.
I made it because Vpopovich seemed to want something that used a lot of cpu, so I made seesaw 2.
I didn't make it because it was practical, but to fill a nich?.

I don't need profiles so I never learned how to use them.

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

How to setup FFDshow to only play certain profiles based on video input size and format type.
1.) Open the FFDSHow video Presets tab.
2.) Click "New". It will create a new profile called Default 1.
3.) Check the box called "Automatic preset loading".
Then click the tab that says "Preset Autoload conditions".
4.) Now that Preset Autoload Conditions is open. Highlight the box that says "On all conditions (AND)"
5.) Click Close, and Apply.

Tick the box that says "On Movie Dimensions match"
For width, set both boxes to the resolution your video file input will be.
For height, set both boxes to the resolution the input file will be.

Tick the box that says "On FourCC Match".
Then click the dropdown box on Fourcc match and click the type of file your making this custom profile for.

- Notes. It will not work unless you also set the codecs to play the video file.
It's easiest to install ffdshow and leave the "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow" at default.
Then if you want to play mpeg 2 just follow the way I show you in the ffdshow config section.
When installing ffdshow just leave it all at default.

For youtube videos that you download, the input resolution will be 320, 240.
And you will need to set in codecs FLV1 and VP5/VP6 to libavcodec.
ANd in the On Fourcc match dropdown box set it to accept flv1, vp50, vp60.

I am new to this and trying to install everything, so sorry for the idiot question. Why is Haali's not an option for me to select when I am setting up media player classic? Thanks.

subliminac

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Maybe a stupid question but, why we can use hardware aceleration with programs like Arcsoft's Total media theater and not with others like Theatertek were the "need for speed" is crucial? if this can be achieved, we can use all those power consuming avisynth's plugins with low cpu usage. Thanks

jorsan

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

subliminac,

Use need to install matroska first:
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

jorsan,
Because the people who make FFDShow do not know how to do what you requested.
I've seen them talk about it and it's way to complex.
They would need to talk to the ATi Nvidia People and cooperate on a solution.
And I don't see that happening any time near or far.

I got it!. I did a mistake and did not delete this line: decimate() # Delete this line if your playing a pal dvd, or if changing TFF to BFF doesn't stop the stutter.

I cant ffdshow audiodecoder to work properly. When i do as you suggested the aound was corrupt. I tried then to enable spdif in codec tab instead of those other filter. Search for wave output must be disabled also.

Picture is fine but audio is either corrupt or out of sync.

Tried ac3filter also. Same problem.

As a last effort i tried an Nvidia audio codec. Worked like hell!!

I get i bit of stutter somethimes. Cpu load is about 80% and my ram usage is about 1.7 gig out of a total of 2.

I think this is a bit much.

Any experiences with your hardware?

I tried to install the "old" script. Seesaw 2.5. Removed FFT3DFilter.dll and fftw3.dll and put seesaw 2.5 script in avisynth in ffdshow decoder options:

"SetMemoryMax(1024)
AssumeTFF() # If it stutters try AssumeBFF instead of AssumeTFF.
Telecide(chroma=false)
decimate() # Delete this line if your playing a pal dvd, or if changing TFF to BFF doesn't stop the stutter.
FluxSmoothT(3)
ColorMatrix(Mode="Rec.601->Rec.709",clamp=false,threads=2)
MT("
SeeSaw(NRlimit=0, NRlimit2=5, Sstr=2.22, Szp=1, Slimit=9, Sdamplo=16, Spower=1, sootheT=95, SdampHi=39)
",3)
aWarpSharp(depth=20, blurlevel=2, thresh=0.21, cm=0)"

Picturequality is realy bad. There are 2 white stripes across the screen and the picture looks lika its from and lod crappy vhs player.

I really cant understand why i am not able to restore the old settings. Has there been some changes in the filters that may cause theese problems?

Homealone1

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Ok. Reinstalled Zp, ffdshow end avisynth. Configured according to Seesaw 2.5.

Picture and audio is good but i got a script error message:
"there is no function named "telecide" (ffdshow_filter_avisynth_script line4)

All filters in the avisynth plugins folder should be correct.

Homealone1

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

I have solved last problem. In order to get the original Seesaw script to work I had to change to an older version of ffdshow.

I am no using rev 1413 and it works great. About 20% load on the cpu.

Any experiences with your hardware?
Here is another code you didn't say you tried.

Code:
SetMemoryMax(1024)

AssumeTFF() # If it stutters try AssumeBFF instead of AssumeTFF.
Telecide(chroma=false)
decimate() # Delete this line if your playing a pal dvd, or if changing TFF to BFF doesn't stop the stutter.

",4,2)
aWarpSharp(depth=20, blurlevel=2, thresh=0.21, cm=0)
I only have a E6600.
And your saying the Nvidia audio codec works ?

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

I dont know what the problem are. I suspect my quadcore at 3.2gz and 2 gig of ram just isnt enough to run the fft3dfilter.

My system ran at 80% load and i got stutter every now and then.

Lipsync problems was fixed by using the nvidia audiodecoder.

I also had to change dts/ac3 filters to spdif to get audio. Using the liba52 and libdts made audio corrupted or no sound at all.

Overall i changet back to the "old" seesaw 2.5 script. Had to use an older version of ffdshow to make it work properly.

I have not tested the script you added in the last post.
Will try in a few days.

What exactly does this new script do? 80% load on an overclocked quadcore seems a bit much. At the regular seesaw 2.5 script i have an average of 20%.

I will like to thank you for an exellent job and encourage you to continue.. Thank you very much

Homealone1,

Try this FFDshow Audio configuration.

________ FFdshow AC3 Audio ________

Codecs tab
AC3 and DTS: Set the Decoder to SPDIF
Check:
- Use SPDIF when AC3 output set
- Maximize SPDIF compatibility
- Check for DTS in WAV

Check OSD,and Check Jitter.
Close FFdshow Audio Decoder, and play a movie.
While the movie is playing. You'll the the word "Jitter" in the top left of the screen.
Beside the word Jitter is a number. Write this number down, or remember what it was.
Check the Delay Tab. Set each box to the number you wrote down in the previous step.

Check the Equalizer tab.
Set the Equalizer starting from the far left slider: -7.92, -4.92, -1.92, -3.96, -4.92, -6.00, -3.96, -1.92, 0, -3.00

The new script uses less threads which makes it faster.

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Homealone1,

Were you saying in DTS in the codecs tab. Check fo DTS in Wav needs to be unchecked ?

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Ok. I updated the first post.
The ffdshow audio config has been updated.
The fft3dfilter config has been updated.
The ffdshow has been updated.
The software package has been updated and as of today the link works, I tested it.

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Check fo DTS in Wav needs to be unchecked ? Yes.

When this is enabled the audio become corrupt.

One moe thing: The script somehow seems unstable. When osd is enabled to check jitter i very often get different results. One time the jitter "score" even changed during playback from 0-72...

In ffdshow audio options i have to check 24 bit soundcard. If i use ac3 output i cant get dts audio. Only dd. This problem occors even if i have a dts audiomovie.

If this "problem" is caused by my soundcard i dont know. I have the new asus xonar card. (very good card indeed).

hello

what's the advantage i get when i enable resize & aspect and i set it to the monitor / projector resolution? do i get better pq on dvd's than when its just scaled by the player?

and what does the 3:2 pulldown do? does it eliminate the judder effect? im running a pal machine!

susu2k

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Thespian721,

The one I link to in the guide is ok.

exco,

In MPC, use the external filters tab.
Make sure that the codec is activated in FFDshow mpeg2 tab.

susu2k,

It uses lanczos resize.
Google is your friend.

what does the 3:2 pulldown do?

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

so in fact if i dont scale the image, the picture is just stretched, correct?

When I open a dvd without using FFDshow to resize, using MPC.
The movie image is very small on my 2007wfp monitor.
It's a 720x480 screen on my 1680x1050 monitor.

The way MPC scales the dvd is it uses bicubic or bilinear resizing.
Bicubic is similiar to ffdshow's lanczos in quality, at least using photography.
So the resized image, if mpc is set to use bicubic 0.60 resize is pretty good.

I don't know what ZP uses, or TT. If they use bicubic or bilinear.
On that note, when I resized in TT using only my X1300 pro videocard and default TT settings, the picture was very blocky, ugly. I'm sure TT uses bilinear to resize, not sure about ZP.
I think that TT used Bilinear because it was what the videocard told it to use.

Some Nvidia cards use a modified lanczos resize.

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Thanks 8:13.

So I should be getting it from this link: FFDshow. Updated October 11, 2007 and not looking for one dated August 9, 2007 as the beginning of the guide states?

Thanks again!

Thespian721

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

Thespian721,

The difference between the two versions of FFDshow confuses me, honestly.
I do know that the one I link to has avisynth tweaks the one mentioned at the top of the guide doesn't.
What this tweak means, I don't know.
I also wonder if they made some audio changes that affect performance so the newer version is more ac3 compatible.

Since I don't know if it's good or the same as the one mentioned at the top of the guide, I use the one linked to in the hope it's better, but if it is better I don't know.
The one dated August 9, 2007 works for video, but for audio/ac3 I don't know.

It confuses me, so I test the newest one out, see if it works. If it works I use it.
Simple.

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

What minimum speed for AMD CPUs that is necessary to use any of the seesaw/LSF/fft3dfilter configs? I have a X2 3600+ with 2GB of RAM, nVidia 7300GS and Windows Vista but all three of these config runs too slow (100% CPU utilization - huge milliseconds on sync offsets in MPC).

ranpha

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

ranpha,

I wish I knew. I know it has to be a X2, and at a minimum 4800+.
I read good results about this cpu and Seesaw.

But that was a while ago, and currently I don't know the answer to your question.

The fft3dfilter config needs a quadcore. A q6600 that is overclocked.
It will be at least a year before cpu's come out that can easily play the fft3dfilter config without needing to be overclocked.

8:13

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

I'm using the latest version of ffdshow and whenever I enable the Blur&NR filter, my framerate drops in half. This is with Xvids in SD res, and 720p and 1080p HD res. Has nothing to do with CPU usage, since my CPU usage never goes over 60%.

OK I'm new and this blows me away for the most part.

Have been reading many posts over the last couple days in this thread.

I am basicly following the setup in the 1st post and couple other recomended posts.

The reclock I installed doesnt look like the pics in the 1st post(I thought these were updated but could be wrong), I'm also confused on why I need reclock?

also my MPC doesnt have Haali's, I looked to downlod it and only found a large codec pack that had it. So I set to VMR9 renderless for now

I have a dc opty 165 oc'd, 1gig ram, 7600gt card, XP pro, looking to watch sd dvd's in good quality on my Olevia 537H through dvi>hdmi(dont have the TV yet)

thanks in advance for any input, like certain posts I should read

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

daMaster,

As long as it looks ok to the eye I wouldn't worry about frame rate.

SpeedEuphoria,

There are tabs on top of the reclock configuration. Click the middle tab.
I posted two pictures of Reclock, one of them shows the word "Normal".
To get to this configuration, in the front end. In MPC you need to double click reclock in the external filters tab. In ZP you need to click reclock in the codecs tab where you choose renderers.
In TT, you might have to play a dvd and minimize the dvd, by the clock on the task bar you'll see a flashing round icon, double click that and set it to normal.

To get Haali's, install this: Link

You need to go to the renderers tab in either MPC or ZP. I don't think Haali's works in TT.

Hey again sorry for being new to this, but my reclock only looks like this, I have enabled it in MPC. (I figured it out, have to double click it in mpc)
Another thing, I was watching a movie(believe using seesaw?, was using the settings in post 1425), and it shows some lines at the top, ffdshow and reclock frames, ect.. just some text. Is this supposed to be there, or can you turn it off?

Thanks for the link to haali's

Also I was backing up a dvd and noticed the reclock and ffdshow opened and were running is this recomended?Does it have any inpact while backing up dvd's other than using more cpu?

Sorry, I should've been more clear. Basically, whenever I enable the Blur&NR filter, my video stutters as if it's playing at half the frame rate. This is on a dual core Athlon X2 6400+. Also, regardless of the settings, I notice that one of my cores is doing most of the work. Do I need to run with the MT plug-in to get full dual-core support? I thought the new versions of ffdshow supported dual-core without any additional configuration changes.

Would like to thank you again for compileing these guides and all the help and advice for everyone.

And also ask another question

My cpu usage whilst running seesaw is at 63-69%

I have no problem with any kind of stutter, just wondering if it is safe to use it at that rate for a few hours on end watching a long film, or couple of films?

I'm not likely to damage my processor at all?

Your processor will be fine!

CyberScott

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

SpeedEuphoria,

Looking at that picture, you need to click the "video settings" tab, and follow the setup instructions on the first page.

That may be the osd in ffdshow. Uncheck the osd tab in ffdshow audio and video.

I'm not sure about the ripping, but if it works for you then it's ok.

daMaster,

"Is ffdshow multithreaded?
The following list gives an overview of parts in ffdshow that are multithreaded and thus show an improvement when run on a multi-core CPU:

The resize filter is fully multithreaded. It is faster on a dual-core CPU. No configuration is needed. It is not effective on Pentium 4 HT CPUs.
Xvid encoder is multithreaded.
x264 encoder is multithreaded.
With "Queue & misc" -> "Queue output samples" checked, acceleration using multithreading is enabled. You may see some benefit even on a single-core CPU.
libavcodec's MPEG1/2 decoders are multithreaded. It becomes effective when setting "Decoder options" -> "Number of decoding threads" to the number of supported cores. The setting has no effect on Pentium 4 HT CPUs.
libavcodec's MPEG4/MPEG2/MPEG1 encoders are multithreaded. "

Link

If only one core is being used, then treat 50% as 100%.
The rule to avois stutter is never use over 70% cpu.
That means, if your cpu single core uses over 35% then you might get stutter.
They said ffdshow was faster on intel cpu's. So maybe try a intel cpu.

nero041001,

That depends on the heat of the cpu.
Try HMonitor trial version

I'm a little confused about a basic concept. I recently built and started using and HTPC with my projector. I'm using MPC to play DVD's in 720p. MPC seems to work "ok" without installing ffdshow, avisynth, etc, etc. I'm just using the default setting (but did install something called ac3 filter to get 5.1 audio out the spdif connector on my HTPC).

Will I see a significant improvement over default MPC if I install all this "stuff"?

The Top and bottom left are the ATI 2600XT and X1300.
I forget which is which. They look the same.
I used the crysis patch catalyst and set the noise in the x1300 to 101.
I no longer own the 2600xt, but it used the ordinary 7.11 drivers and catalyst I believe.

On the top right we have Media Player Classic, it used weave deinterlacing.
Bottom right we have Seesaw.

All the pictures used MPC 6.9.0.1, Output VMR9 Renderless, mixer checked, Bicubic 1.00 in the MPC output tab.

SpeedEuphoria,

I dl the sw package and used the mt.

In the sw package. Look for the avisynth.dll. Put this in the system32 folder after you've installed avisynth. It should ask if you want to copy over the previous version.
Then put the mt.dll in the system32 folder.
Simple.
I'm using xp pro to test this as well.

Hi, I've been using TT + FFdshow for more than a year now but have two issues that seem imposible (for me and my limited knowledge) to avoid, even setting FFDshow with no filters at all :

1.- When fast motion scene is happening, image is not fluid, jumps from frame to frrame, is not smooth.
2.- when camera is panning top-down or left-right, the image looks like is cut by horizontal lines that doesn't let the image to flow smooth.

My computer is a 1GB AMD Athlon™ 64 3800+ with a Geforce 8600 card so looks like capacity is not a problem. Could you help me please? thanks in advance

Thanks 8:13 for this very informative and helpful thread.

I used FFDshow a year ago with TT with very good image results, but became frustrated with not having proper 3-2 pulldown done onto the video resulting in judder (aside from the proper refresh rate etc..). My understanding was that it was due to ffdshow bypassing of Purevideo's interlacing process and since ffdshow did not have a integrated 3-2 pulldown process i was getting judder.

I've recently lurked through the forums again i see that there is a pulldown option now with FFDshow.
However since i would like to use TT with your TT LSF config (3-2 pulldown option is now being ignored) will i be missing out on proper interlacing again?
In otherwords, what will i be missing using TT with this config vs. having the 3-2 pulldown option enabled?

I have just set up my pc to use mpc using your guide( which i would like to thank you for doing) and it seems to work fine.

I have two questions though.
1/ I get a slight tearing towards the bottom of the picture, is this a video(catalyst) issue or is there a stting I can use to clear this ?

2, my plasma resolution is 1024x1080, what would be the best resolution to use in mpc to fill most (if not all) of the screen ?

Since I first posted this I have also had trouble playing dvd's from disc, and a couple of times have had no audio, is there another setting i need to enable ? as I have tried to set up exactly as posted on the first page.

ANother question ? is it possible to use spdifer with power dvd ultra ?

Thanks again for the help.

jorsan,

Sounds like you need pulldown.
All the sdvd's I own use pulldown, so it looks like if you use TT and don't want those artifacts you should quit using ffdshow.

BulletBill,

Without Pulldown I don't have any problems.
It's been a while since I used ffshow without pulldown I forget how it was without it.
Some artifacts that you might get without pulldown are horizontal lines, other people say it helps with smoothing out the playback if you use the 23.976 or 24 fps on the monitor.

briinthesky,

If I use ZP instead of MPC I get tearing. I don't know why.
I just set up MPC as shown in the first page.

Just set it to your resolution. I don't know the intricacies of special resolutions and just set it to the monitors resolution.

For sound it depends on the plug in your using. If one pugin doesn't work try a different one. With the nvidia audio plugin i get no sound so I use a dfferent one.

Not with pdvdu I don't think.

Thanks! That took care of it. I would suggest making note of this on the opening post for other 64 bit users.

CELangston,

No. I don't know, myself.

rogmesser,

If you turn off trdenoise, yes.

rogmesser,

You are losing:
- RGB conversion (but if you feed RGB colorspace into it (eg. in ffdshow), it's disabled)
- bicubic resize (but if you already resized the content (eg. in ffdshow) to the size of the current desktop, then (again), it doesn't do anything ...)

FreeBaGeL,

Try the ffdshow I linked too on the first page.

Can anyone help me?
I have used MPC now to watch several normal dvd's and a couple of hd-dvd(from hdd) and all where nice and crisp but i find that some of the speach is very quiet and difficult to hear but if i turn the vol up to hear the speach the rest of the soundtrack can be to loud.
Could i use the ffd audio equaliser to bring out the speach and if so which sliders ?
Or do I need to use another codec ?

Thanks.

I'm wondering about settings for my particular config.
Current setup:
quadcore 6600
2 gigs of ram
vista ultimate
8800GT
MPC with haali, coreavc, ffdshow, etc.

I switch between a 22" lcd for daily use and a 52" lcd for media purposes.

So I'll be using this for HD content (x264.mkv, 720-1080p files) and I'm just curious as to what settings I should use? I've had no problems with:
vmr9 renderless / texture surfaces and render in 2d / coreavc
(which I believe is default settings aside from using coreavc?)

Then I tried the settings in the first page:
haali / render video in 3d [bicubic .60]* / coreavc
*not too sure what that should be set to either lol.

What I do notice is that if I open a 1080p (for examples sake) video file, it will automatically set itself to the widths & proper height of my LCDs screen (Image A), but if I use the latter settings, it'll open up to a third of the size (Image B). So I end up adjusting the MPC window so it looks like Image A without going fullscreen. Hope that made sense.

Thanks guys!

Forgot to add that I get no frame-rate problems, so I guess this really boils down to efficiency and PQ?
Yikes, this thread about FFDshow while I'm using coreAVC. I didn't have problems with using either decoder though, I think I made the switch to coreAVC because of what I read up on in various sites.

Can I use hardware acceleration with ffdshow? I have a 3870 and C2D6600 and want to offload load on the cpu. I use SeeSaw currently.

Thanks

FreeBaGeL, briinthesky,

I redid the ffdshow audio configuration.
If the sound goes from too quiet to too loud, your using the wrong speaker configuration. It's outputting 5.1 and you only have 2 speakers.
If you only have 2 speakers, set the output to 16 bit and see if that helps.
Don't check ac3 and 16 bit at the same time in output though.

capj,

I get that too when I fiddle with the renderers.
I forget how to use vmr9 and not get that effect.
But to get rid of it easily, just set output in mpc to default.
The colors still look fine, to me at least.

greg1292,

I glanced at the threads over at doom9: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120465
And I saw then discussing what your asking me.
I have no clue how it works, but they seem to be doing something with dxva.
Maybe something to do with deinterlacing?

I updated the first post and sw package.
New ffdshow, mpc, zp links, new ffdshow audio configuration, and that suggestion about avisynth and 64 bit.

well I switched to powerdvd 5 that I had laying aroung and playback is smooth as butter, not sure that the quality is there though. runs at like 20%cpu or so and I can get it to full screen w/o zooming on my TV. Tried the free purevideo decoder w/ wmplayer, its ok but cant get fullscreen. May give the free zoom player a shot.

Its must have been something w/ ffdshow that I had wrong that was making playback suffer, I have a hard time believing that my amd dually oc'd to 2.4ghz cant play dvd's smoothly on basic settings. I'm just going to do some more reading and get up to speed on many of the terms used

Was wondering if you can tell me why I can't get AC3 to work from Vista Media Center with ffdshow or AC3Filter. It is outputting as 2 channel PCM instead of 5.1 It works fine using MPC. Do you have any suggestions?

Gspot says the codec is

0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3
48000Hz 128 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo LAME3.96r

ffdshow shows 48000Hz stereo 123kbps mp3 libmad

With ffdshow, audio sound tinny and sound like it is overly compressed
I would have thought it was just the content, BUT when I play it with VLC it sounds great.

Is it possible to have both Ac3 spdif out and speakers out connected at the same time using Zoomplayer (i'm using ffdshow audio or dscaller audio) so I don't have to always turn on my A/V Receiver when watching movies with ac3 sound and use only the tv sound when I want?

I am having a boatload of problems here and could use some help. I'm trying to play .mkv's in media player classic. I installed FFDShow without changing any settings everything looked great, except that the video stuttered.

So, I went through the setup steps here and have encountered the following:
1) The aspect ratio is all screwy now (note that this happened even before I checked the change aspect ratio tab in FFDShow). When I click full screen there are no black bars on movies where there should be, and the picture is badly vertically stretched, and just all around looks pretty bad compared to how it looked before.

2) I get an error in the top left corner that says "There is no function named Telecide".

3) In the media player settings, the option to select Haali's Video Renderer in the DirectShow Video section of the Output tab is grayed out and unselectable. I am guessing that this is the root of the problem I am having above in point 1).

4) I can't seem to find the "Queue and Output tab" in FFDShow.

I've had similar problems in the past. My suggestions:

1) Make sure you're using the latest build of FFDShow - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

1a) Sounds like either the resize value or the renderer is messed up - disable resize for now, and choose Overlay. Does the image at least look normal at this point?

2) There are several additional codecs in the original downloads that need to be copied into different folders - for now, just remove all the data on the AVISynth option other than "SetMemoryMax(1024)"

3)Haali is a separate install - http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ (download and install the Matroska Splitter). After that is installed, if you restart MPC you should be able to choose Haali's renderer.

4) Hopefully fixed by installing the latest FFDShow - you are looking in the Video Decoder config not the VFW config right?

Storme,

Did you set it to same as input?

Vampiro,

I'm not sure what your asking.
Came you post some screen shots and explain more, please?

FreeBaGeL,

Try MPC, with default set in the output tab to get the proper aspect?
Sometimes the renderer chosen messes with the aspect I find.

About telecide.
Do you have the plugin in the avisynth plugins folder?
What plugins do you have in the avisynth plugins folder?

I suggest you use vmr windowless and try that before going to haalis.

Look at the demo picture to find the que check box.

Yes, I did. This problem is isolated to inside Vista Media Center. I can not figure it out at all. It works perfect in Media Player Classic.

It outputs as 5.1 but somewhere in the decoding chain, it changes to 2.0.

Based on AC3Filter, it changes from 5.1 to 2.0 when it goes Decoder 5.1> Processor> 2.0

DTS ouputs as 5.1 but not AC3

Alright, I went through these and appear to be making progress.

I tried unchecking the resize area and checking overlay and it didn't do much (just left the film letterboxed in the middle of the screen, but at least got rid of the stretching), but installing the mastroka splitter fixed the sizing issues. However, the film was stuttering REALLY badly (much worse than before, it was basically freezing every couple seconds).

Then I ran into bigger issues. I tried turning the resizing back on, and all I get in MPC is a black screen while the movie plays. I unchecked it and went back to overlay but I still just get the black screen even though this was working 3 minutes ago.

Man computers are weird

UPDATE: Ok, a restart fixed the black screen, and overlay has the sizing correct again, but I'm still getting crazy amounts of stuttering.

What I meant was: in my standalone dvd player if I use only my scart to tv connection I can still ear the sound coded in ac3 (but only stereo because the limitation of tv set), whyle connected thru digital coaxial to my A/V receiver (if I want just have to turn on the a/v receiver to have full ac3 decoding). The question is if I can have ac3 sound not only by spdif but also using the speakers out.

Storme,

I don't use ffdshow and vmc. So I don't know how to help you.

FreeBaGeL,

It works better with a dual core intel cpu and a dedicated video card and at least 512 of ram for xp, and 1 gig for vista.

Vampiro,

in ffdshow audio, multichannel device. You can choose various devices.
One of those might help.
If you choose a different device, in the os control panel, sound. Set it to the device you chose in ffdshow audio output.

I don't fiddle with the sound on my 2 speaker hdmi sound too much, and I don't have a reciever. So there's only so much I can suggest about that.

As I mentioned before, I previously ran the same videos with a single core XP 2600+ and 1.5gb ram and am now having stuttering issues with a dual core X2 4000+ and 2gb ram. Granted, the former had a dedicated graphics card but I've been told that shouldn't make this large a difference, especially considering the stuttering has gotten worse as I've changed settings. I think this is definitely a setup issue more than a hardware issue.

FreeBaGeL

FFdshow Walkthrough Basic Intermediate Advanced Configurations.

FreeBaGeL,

the way integrated video works is it uses the cpu and system ram.
Ram is fed into the cpu in lines, and bottlenecks happen when the speed of the cpu cannot read all the lines or the ram is too slow to feed the cpu to prevent bottlenecks.

resizing the video takes a lot of cpu, believe it or not, and if you have a dedicated video card then the bottleneck should not be because of video choking the cpu and ram.

I think your video is choking the amount of lines the cpu reads from ram for other applications.
