HELP! How to get XPS 600 Mobo to Recognize card in 2nd PCIe x16 slot??

Hi! XPS 600 owner here.

I've been using my nVidia 6800 to run two monitors and a television, using two "schemes". Trouble is, the GPU can only support two devices at a time, so it's either the TV or 2nd monitor that must be shut down to use the other.

I just bought another PCIe x16 GPU (an nVidia 7300GT) cheap and wanted to use it to run the 3rd device, so that I could use the three monitors all at once (I really ought to be able to use FOUR with this set up).

I didn't expect it'd matter that the cards are different because I'm not interested in SLI and won't be running any single monitor off more than one card.

Trouble is, my DELL Bios (A10) reports the second PCIe x16 slot as "unpopulated" and device manager doesn't detect it.

Any ideas? Really s to think I bought a PC with two PCIe x16 slots, thinking I'd actually be able to use them, and find out different.

you cant use 2 diff video cards in the system even though there are 2 pci-e slots. 2 pci-e slots are for sli only (similar gpus) you cant mix n match.

HELP! How to get XPS 600 Mobo to Recognize card in 2nd PCIe x16 slot??

Hmm.. don't recall seeing that anywhere. Is there documentation to that effect? I'm confused because the 2nd card isn't even being detected at all (I expected at least an error message telling me to get an identical card).

So ... could I run 3 or 4 monitors with two identical 6800 cards(?), or am I stuck with only two monitors no matter what (excepting replacing the 6800 with something that supports more than two monitors natively)?

This pretty much [inhales]. Why have a full bandwith x16 PCI-e slot that doesn't work? I can't even add a PCI video card because the dang board only has 3 PCI slots (and I'm already using them). I feel ripped.

You need to move your existing card into that second slot to make sure it works. I have never heard you cannot mix cards for multimonitor setup either.

Good idea, I need to try that. Since my system's now almost a whole year old, my only option for getting another Dell nVidia 6800 to match is ebay. Not many plain 6800's for sale these days.

You cant mix X16 cards just as you cant mix different kinds of CPU.

You cant have an ATX X1900 and an Nvidia 7900 in each of the SLI slots.

You cant mix a pentium 3 and a pentium 2 into a dual cpu motherboard or
run different cpus that have different fsb etc.

Its just not correct at all that you can mix in anything you want.

HELP! How to get XPS 600 Mobo to Recognize card in 2nd PCIe x16 slot??

OK, I'M SERIOUSLY FREAKIN' OUT NOW!

I've done some more tests, as suggested. I'M NOT HAPPY.

I pulled my 6800, leaving just the 7300GT in the lower PCI-e slot. No video. Hmm, maybe you can't use a single card alone in the second PCI-e slot??

I moved the 7300GT to the upper slot, and that works - I get video and recognize the 7300GT.

Now, for the fun part.

Back to the store. Buy ANOTHER 7300GT. Now I have two identical SLI capable cards (or so it says on the box). At least now I should find out if my lower slot works.

I've now got both 7300GT's installed. NOTHING HAPPENS.

My BIOS still says the second slot is "Not Populated". The freshly removed, cleaned, and reinstalled nVidia drivers do not detect a second card, or give me options for (or even mention of) SLI. This with just one monitor plugged in, by the way.

Device manager still only sees one video adapter. WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH MY SECOND PCIe SLOT? THIS IS SO FREAKIN' WRONG. I'm not a safe person to be around now.

Please help me...

Is your system still in warranty? It sounds like a bad slot from what you've been saying.

The Slot may have been permanently Damaged by the PCIE card. There are also some motherboards that have a kind of physical jumper for the motherboard to enable or disable SLI. I dont have an XPS so I have no Idea but when in the store looking at SLI capable NFORCE chipset based motherboards they had a kind of edgecard jumper for such things.

ATI doesnt do SLI the same way Nvidia does.

The 2 standards are not compatable.

It would appear that dell is using Crossfire and not NVIDIA SLI?
