Question M1730 Chipset ( DELL XPS Laptops )

M1730 Chipset

I did a quick search but did find what I was looking for.... It is my understanding that the GM965 chipset is based

off the PM965 chipset but with integrated (onboard) graphics...

This is where I am confused... I have dual 8700M's in SLI, but using Intels Chipset Identification Utility, it states I

have the GM965 chipset... CPU-Z reports the same thing..

I do not see how this is possible.. is it an error in how the apps are reading the chipset information?

here are 2 pics of Intel chipset identifcation utility and CPU-Z:

Can you guys post what chipset is being reported for your laptop? I do not think it is possible that I installed the wrong drivers... ( dont think the exe would let me install if there was no onboard graphics.. ) I just want to know if its a bug in reporting the chipset or not..

Thanks guys!

Intel changed their "numbering" (suppose it is lettering) system for the 965 chipset. The 945PM had discreet graphics, and the 945GM had integrated. For the 965 series both have discreet cards, although if there was an integrated graphics, this would be on the 965GM, not PM. Thus, both models can have dedicated cards.

Thank you for the information

so does this mean that their may be M1730's with the PM965 and GM965 out there? both with dedicated graphics?

and when you say both models can have dicrete graphics, does it mean that if I were to remove the dedicated graphics card, that the laptop would default to the onboard graphics? ( most likely it would not even boot )

from what i understand, if you have a 965gm with didicated video card, it probably would not have a integrated graphics chip.... but if you have integrated video, you more than likely would have the 965gm chipset. sort of confusing i must say

Thank you Yes it is confusing.. I liked their old numbering/lettering scheme better.. it was easier to follow.. so was their numbering/lettering scheme on their processors before they went to this T7700,X9000 stuff...

Everest Ultimate 4.5 reports my chipset as:

North Bridge: Intel Crestline-PM PM965

I do not understand why Intels own Chipset Identification Utility does not
