Question RAM upgrade 5150 1G is x8 and 256 is x16 is there difference ( DELL Upgrade Hardware )

RAM upgrade 5150 1G is x8 and 256 is x16 is there difference

I bought some 1G Kingston RAM and finally installed it. So now I have 2 - 1G sticks and 2 - 256Mb sticks for 2.5 gigs of RAM. Works great so far but what's the difference?

In the BIOS the 1Gsays x8 organization and the 256 is x16 organization. Is there a speed difference?

The 1G's are Kingston DDR2 667MHz (says compatible 667MHz PC5400, 533MHz PC4300)

The 256Mb's are samsung 1Rx16 PC2 4200U - 444 -12 - c3 DDR2 533MHz.

So is there any major differences between x16 or x8 configuration? Can someone please explain?

Should I remove the 256? Seems to run faster (I have a ton of stuff on my desktop) but would it run even faster without 256? I would think the x16 is faster than x8 but maybe not.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

What i do know is the 667MHz PC5400 will clock down to 533MHz PC4300

when you put ram in like this it clocks to the lowest the speed your computer can run

or the speed of the lowest ram in your case it is 533 mhz .

Ido not what speed the ram buss is on your computer if it is 533 it is stuck at that speed .

If it is 667 youcan gain a little more speed by upgradingall the ram to 667 mhz !

Good Luck

RAM upgrade 5150 1G is x8 and 256 is x16 is there difference

I appreciate your input. Another poster mentioned my 5150 Front Side BUS runs at 533 max. However any checker program I run says the FSB is 800 MHz although it could be the difference between the E510 and the 5150 essentially exactly the same except for the FSB motherboard speed difference.

regarding the x8 and x16 I think it's a chip configuration on the board itself and not at all related to how fast the chips can run.

The Dell manual states 400 and 533MHZ memory. I put some 667MHZ RAM in my E510 and it didn't change any benchmark results.

I've confirmed the results. I took out the 2 - 256Mb RAM sticks and the 2 - 1Gb memeory sticks 667MHz in the startup BIOS still said 533MHz.

So looks like there is no FSB difference, it maxes out at 533MHz.

Hi

The CPU front side 800 MHZ buss is not the same

as the ram533 buss thats why it only runs at 533 .

A lot of people seem to get this mixed upCPU speed versus

ram speed on the two fsb buss .

Good Luck
