realtek alc660 sound not working

Hi there,

I just bought me a new motherboard -- the Asus M2V, with VIA K8T890/VIA VT8237 chip set. On board it has the Realtek alc660 sound chip.

But the sound does not work with Kubuntu Feisty. Kubuntu recognizes a sound card. Everything seems to be fine. e38 But no sound at all. (I already tried un-muting all the channels.)

Some info that may be of help:
aplay -l:
Code:
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 0: ALC861VD Analog [ALC861VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: VT82xx [HDA VIA VT82xx], device 1: ALC861VD Digital [ALC861VD Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
lspci -v
Code:
# other devices omitted
80:01.0 Audio device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA High Definition Audio Controller (rev 10)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 81e7
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 26
        Memory at fbffc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
The driver used seems to be snd_hda_intel. (I don't know how to figured it out correctly.) Is this maybe the wrong driver? I had a look at the alsa-project site already. But from the table given there I couldn't figure out the appropriate driver for this chip set.

Maybe one of you guys knows an answer to this problem.

Just let me know if you need some more info.

Thanks,
Christian

realtek alc660 sound not working

Ok, finally I got it working this night.

I followed this howto: HdaIntelSoundHowto.

And as model I used 3stack-660.

Hope this helps someone else.

PS: The strange thing for me was that the information needed was in the HdaIntelSoundHowto althogh I was trying to get the Realtek chipset to work.

Cheers,
Christian

realtek alc660 sound not working

Thanks for this!

Yesterday I built a new machine for my girlfriend (with the exact same motherboard) and we encountered exactly the same problem - no sound despite it being "correctly" identified. So after some quick recompiling of ALSA and using the same model as you did everything worked peachy.

realtek alc660 sound not working

All I had to do was put th 1f40 e line

Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-660
into the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to get it working. Just paste it into the bottom. Didn't need to compile a new Alsa or anything. This was on Feisty Fawn, fresh install.
