Inspiron 1525 number lock

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. Upon booting, the Num Lock symbol lights up but the keys do not type numbers, only characters. When I hold the Fn key, the keypad works, but only while I am holding the Fn key. Very inconvenient. Any ideas?

Here is the solution from Dell along with some of my own comments???

It appears that Dell has formatted these laptops (and perhaps others) the same way as they do a desktop with a keyboard that has a separate number keyboard.

To fix this for laptop performance see below ??? read the whole post before doing this...

  • Reboot computer
  • When Dell logo (NOT Windows logo) appears, hit F2 button, putting you into bios setup
  • Scroll down to ???post performance?? [I may have this name slightly wrong but it definitely is the only one with the word "post"] and hit enter
  • Scroll down to ???Key pad (embedded)?? and hit enter
  • change that setting to ???num lock?? instead of the ???fn key??

This creates a second problem ??? the numlock key is on by default when the computer boots so you???ll be typing ???2?? when you think you???re typing ???k?? etc. when the computer turns on ??? really a problem when you???re trying to type in your password for the laptop.

Do this at the same time as you fix the ???Key pad (embedded)?? setting in the F2 bios setup:

  • you should also scroll down to ???post system performance??
  • and then ???num lock led?? (it???s in the same folder/column as ???keypad embedded?? above ???)
  • and then you can set that to ???off?? instead of ???on??.

Why Dell has these defaults set for a new laptop is beyond me - jeez??? but Ryan at customer service was great and this fixed the problem???
