Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix? interactive entertainment products in North America, announced today the upcoming release of INFINITE UNDISCOVERY? for the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

INFINITE UNDISCOVERY is the newest fantasy RPG developed by tri-Ace Inc. (STAR OCEAN?, VALKYRIE PROFILE?) for next-generation hardware. Players will be drawn into a real-time world woven of countless threads where their choices will spin untold discoveries. This title, combining the talents of both Square Enix and tri-Ace, will be an unforgettable experience. The actions taken by the player with each discovery will have a real-time impact on the world.

IU preview : IGN
The game as a whole appears to stick with this concept of real time. There are no pauses, except for black transition screens between events and gameplay. You enter battle directly on the fields of exploration, without a transition to a battle screen. As a nice touch, your character doesn't even have to pause when drawing his weapon -- he just pulls it out in mid-stride.

Describing Infinite Undiscovery as an RPG may be a bit misleading. While it does have character development and a story, the battle system is pure action -- even more than in past tri-Ace games.

Nowhere is the action feel illustrated better than in the game's fantastic boss battles. The first boss that closes off the opening dungeon pits you against an ogre who gets released once the dungeon guards have been alerted to your attempt at escape. Facing off against this guy directly would result in a quick death (not instantaneous, but pretty quick), so instead you and Aya have to make a run for it. The way out takes you up a long flight of stairs guarded by numerous smaller foes and blocked off by barricades that have to be destroyed either by direct sword slash or by making Aya fire arrows at exploding barrels to clear the way. All the while, you're being chased from behind by the ogre, who's so big that, in addition to stomping up the stairs behind you, he will actually leap from one level to the next, catching up to you instantly even if you manage to get ahead. This chase scene is as intense as any action game.

Character Details :
The game makes use of 18 characters throughout the story, though you can only have 4 to a party at a time and only have complete, direct control of Capell. It has been suggested there could be as many as 10 party members on screen at once, though it is not yet clear how this will work. The names are officially romanized on the official japanese site.

Capell- Mistaken for Sigmund the Liberator, this young minstrel is imprisoned by the Order of Chains. Lacking the qualities of a hero, even his captors doubt his identity. Although he wants to remain uninvolved in the turbulent events surrounding him, it seems fate has something planned for this reluctant hero. Capell lacks a glyph, a symbol most humans have somewhere on their person, and is considered bad luck because of it. His English voice actor is done by * Yuri Lowenthal
__________________________________________________ _____________
Aya- After Capell is tossed in prison, she rescues him, thinking that he is Sigmund the Liberator. However, after a short while she realizes Capell isn't Sigmund, but rather a minstrel who bears an uncanny resemblance to him.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Sigmund- The Liberator for whom Capell is mistaken, the trailer suggests he is something of a role model to Capell ("When you find something to believe in, fight for it").
__________________________________________________ _____________
Eduardo- A cool headed man who wields a large sword.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Roka and Luka- Young spell-casting twins, one male and one female. The male twin is a beast tamer, and the female is a summoner.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Mirche- A seductive looking woman who uses books to cast spells. She appears to know Capell, and may possibly be his sister, judging by japanese dialogue from the site.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Komachi- A beautiful girl who wields two daggers and uses magic.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Eugene- A knowledgeable looking man, he uses a staff in battle.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Balbagan- A large man who wields a battle axe, he accompanies the liberation army to settle a score with Leonid, who he once lost a match to.
__________________________________________________ _____________
Leonid- The man who was enslaved the moon with chains, he is seen as a antagonist. His English voice actor is done by Rylan McPhee.

Yup. Go watch it fellas. For those of us who don't do Live, Blimblim is encoding it onto the net as we speak.

EDIT: It's up on gamersyde. The frame-rate issues are from the quality of the video player (Inside XBOX) on Live, and not from the actual game. Though there isn't any reason to believe that the game won't have framerate problems, at this point.

EDIT: Okay, I saw it. It was meh. To be expected since its the beginning of the game and what not. The framerate was smooth from what I saw. I can't judge the graphics too much because the video quality wasn't so great. Combat system is what you'd expect. There's an attack action, switching characters for a brief attack, and a sorta of parry-freezing technique as well.

Official Infinite Undiscovery Thread V2 Xbox 360s Most Ambitious J RPG Exclusive GameTrailers.com Forums

Just watched the second gameplay video! I'm astounded!!! The gameplay is truly groundbreaking material for a JRPG! The events remind me of mild versions of Shadow of the Colossus sequences combined with the item and stat depth of an RPG!!! (drools) Especially having the dragon destroy the pillars so you can go thru! The music is so Shadow of the Colossus!!!

This game is incredible! It's genre-breaking! Using the chick's arrows to explode barrels. I'm truly in love! This is only a sample of what this game has to offer and there so many cool playable characters too!! OMG!!! I'm freaking out!!!!

Official Infinite Undiscovery Thread V2 Xbox 360s Most Ambitious J RPG Exclusive GameTrailers.com Forums

Awesome, thanks for the info. It seems there will be some decent replay value out of this one--I can only hope these 'more than one possible solution[s]' are worth the repeat.

And as I suspected, these "Action Points" function the same way as they did (although they had a different name) in Star Ocean 3.

Official Infinite Undiscovery Thread V2 Xbox 360s Most Ambitious J RPG Exclusive GameTrailers.com Forums

cool thanks for the info I think it's definetly worth a look. btw I hate when people lable shit as generic without actually cheecking out the game.

Just edit the first page. Spreading out the information across different pages is a bad idea.

Add the stuff I included while you're at it.

Official Infinite Undiscovery Thread V2 Xbox 360s Most Ambitious J RPG Exclusive GameTrailers.com Forums

So, since there's plenty of info around about the game now... Me and duckroll thought it was a good idea to make a thread with all the info known about the game. Plenty of people are confused by what this game is, some even call it GENERIC. We are here to educate those people...

Story:

Pretty simple. You play as Capell, a flute player as the game calls him, who gets imprisioned because the enemy thinks he is actually the Legendary Hero Sigmund. He gets rescued by Aya (A woman saving a dude... gotta love tri-Ace). Capell then joins the Liberation Army, which is trying to save the world from the Order of Chains. "Wait what the hell is the Order of Chains?" a group led by Leonid, hell bent on... destroying the world. Sounds amazingly original I know!

Worldview:

The world of IU is fully dependent of the moon. Each citizen of this world, has a Lunargram (glyph in the english version) which basically dictates what you'll do in your life. The moon then decided to stop giving its power to this world, and thus lots of natural phenomena are occuring. Aside from this, there really isn't much known about the world of IU.

Characters (revealed so far), their classes and Lunargrams:

Capell - A flute player.

Aya - An archer

Sigmund - A knight

Eduardo - Warrior

Eugene - Priest

Miruce/Michelle - Medic

Roka - Summoner

Luca - Beast User

N/A
Balbagan - Berserker (Think Diablo's Barbarian)
N/A
Gustav - A bear

Gameplay:

Seamless - The combat in Infinite Undiscovery is seamless and there are no transitions. Like many other action RPGs and adventure games the battles take place in the same field of exploration.

Completely real time - The action in the game does not stop flowing, even when you need a time out from combat. Pressing the Back button will make the party sit down to rest, this also opens up the game menu allowing you to use items, change equipment and skills, and so on. But even then the action does not stop, if you do this in the middle of combat enemies will continue to attack without mercy. It is best to find a safe and quiet place before resting.

Draw your blade - The RT button will toggle Capel's combat status between active and passive. When you draw your blade for an active encounter, the rest of the party will follow suit. Should you decide withdraw and run instead, pressing RT again will sheath your sword and the rest of the party will stop fighting as well.

Basic combat - Pressing the A button delivers a normal attack on the targeted enemy, while the B button will deliver a heavy attack. Different combos will result in different sequences of attacks, with the heavy attack always being the final blow in a combo.

Reflect Drive - By timing the LT button at the right time, just before an enemy's blow hits Capel, he will perform a Reflect Drive counter. This counter attack strike will leave the enemy defenseless for a moment allowing you to retaliate with a deadly combo.

Battle Skills - As Capel gains various Battles Skills as he progresses, you will be able to map these attacks onto the X and Y buttons. Pressing the respective button in combat will trigger that skill. You can use a battle skill to finish a chain of regular attacks as well, instead of a heavy attack. Battle Skills take up MP when used.

Action Points - The vertical bar on the right of the screen represents the AP bar. When you gain Action Points, the AP bar increases and goes up. When an enemy is being attacked, the AP bar will indicate a level on the bar. If the current AP bar is higher than that level, heavy attacks and Battle Skills will gain an additional edge. Depending on the type of heavy attack or the individual Battle Skill, the enemy will either be struck into the air, knocked away or smashed onto the ground. This puts the enemy in a vulnerable position for additional combos.

Force - A successive series of combos on an enemy will result in Yellow Force gained for the party. This Yellow Force replenishes Action Points. When a successive series of combos are delivered on an enemy that has been struck into the air, Red Force will give the party additional experience points. A successive series of combos on an enemy that has been smashed onto the ground will result in Green Force, replenishing HP and MP for the party.

Connect Action - Similar to Battle Skills, Capel can also equip two Connect Actions for each party member, mapped to the X and Y buttons. In combat, hitting the RB button will show the Connect Guide which maps each of other other three party members onto a respective button - X, A and B. Hitting that button will connect Capel with that party member. When connected, Capel can still move normally and attack, but pressing X or Y will trigger the respective Connect Action which puts Capel in direct control of that character's respective skill for the moment.

Tactics - While the player controls only Capel, there are different party tactics that can be activated in battle. This will change the way the party behaves and give you better control over any given situation. There are available commands: Move freely, Split up and attack, Concentrate on one enemy, Stay behind and wait, Combo, and Conserve MP.

Party Relations - Sometimes during or after a battle, party members will request to rest and recover. The player can ignore such requests but it will affect relations with that character negatively. Likewise the player can check the personal data of party members when in the camp menu to discover that character's traits and personality. If there is something the character likes or wants, going out of your way to fulfil that request will impact relations with that character positively.

Jobs - Each and every character in the game has a job class. The job class of the characters serve as both character background development, as well as a template for the types of skills the characters have. As Capel is a flute player, he is able to play tunes that can unlock passages and support the party's status.

Situation Battle - Throughout the various fields and dungeons of the game, there are many scripted events known as Situation Battles. These situations will pop up throughout the game as you advance in the story. When you return to areas later, it will be possible to explore more freely without the tension and high octane pace of the scripted events, but whenever the player is advancing in the game, there will be many varied scripted scenarios thrown at you to keep the game exciting and challenging. Some situations will have more than one possible solution, while others will require the player to figure out how to overcome the problem.

Use all your senses - Aside from visual contact, enemies and monsters can be attracted to sound and smell as well. When visual senses are clouded or blocked, the minimap will reflect the other senses instead. If the player uses an item with a strong smell, or performs an action which creates a loud sound, enemies can still be drawn to the party even in darkness.

Capel [Capell, whatever] has a happy go lucky attitude we're all familiar with, but knows when it's time to be serious. He seems sorta wimpy as well from the translation of the blogs.

IMO.

From what I can tell, Capell is almost nothing like Tidus, Cloud, or Leon/Squall.

Tidus was spontaneous, rough-textured in both his speech and how he interacted with others. Cloud was a silent emo for the most part, and Squall was the sullen, would-rather-just-"..."-all-the-time.

Capell from what I've seen holds the highest similarity to Tidus in the sense that he has a playful arrogant nature about him, but what makes him distinct from Tidus is his form of speech, which affects how he seems to interact with others. Despite his complaints to the prison guard, he's incredibly polite with his speech and has that bishounen gentleness that a lot of anime are just flooded with these days.

But no, I wouldn't consider his personality anything 'new' either, but comparing the video from Part 1 of the gameplay demo, and his opening line in the Japanese version of the Twins Trailer, he at least seems to make some significant character development, going from a confused, happy-go-lucky individual to someone who seems to want to do his very best at whatever it is he feels only he can accomplish. If Tri-Ace does develop his character in a way that makes his onset significantly different from how he is late in the game, I won't complain.

The Connect Action thing? I think so. You say something to her and she responds whenever you trigger the action, but it never initiates. The reason because she was busy with something else, but still.

Oh, and I just realized the camera shaking was because of the ogre stomping. My bad.

Haven't played a JRPG in so long, but despite this game looking graphically amazing I'm failing to see the real draw in the characters. I know we're in the era of GRIMDARK REALISM, but I'd like to see some new personalities in this genre rather than another Tidus/Cloud/Leon/Squall main character.

Still, will probably end up buying this as I'm a sucker for any good 360 games that are shooters.

Publisher:An exclusive RPG from the respected studio Square Enix, developed in conjunction with Microsoft Game Studios.

Entry #3

Capell, let's talk about the Lunagrams today.

Moon Signs??

They're called Lunagrams. Why do I have a bad feeling about this...
Lunagrams are marks given to people who are blessed by Highnail upon birth. These marks have the ability to utilize the power of the moon to grant the bearer various benefits ♪

What's Highnail??
You really don't know anything, do you? Go take a look for yourself in the 'World' section of the web page!

Okay~

*runs off*

Even though Capell is gone, let us continue our discussion.

As you can see, these Lunagrams are marked on the body like so. In my case...
I'm back! They sure are convenient, huh?
Jeez, I was in the middle of the discussion too...
However, they're not always a convenience. Take a look at this:

What the?
A Lunagram that makes one speak in reverse...

Umm... Now for this week's 'This and That.' There's something you want to say to everyone, right Aya?

About the on-stage gameplay demonstration that was supposed to appear on Marketplace... Because it was something that the staff played directly on that day, it was put up on Inside Xbox instead. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Aya was a liar ♪

...

Umm... Aya??

*sniff*

Everybody make mistakes, Aya!
As for everyone else, please watch the demonstration video, currently up on Inside Xboxー

if thats true, then the mod's are fucked up.

Someone wrote I was a whore for 2 days ago,and didnt even get a ban.
I been called whore, fag, retard and even worse on this site for no good reasons, and none has lead to a ban to those.
I myself once got banned for calling someone a "sonyslave"...I mean come on.
WHoever that mod was,he has issues.

So what did Bigboss do that was so awful that they had to ban him?
Its probably just a short ban though.

Why? I actually think Infinite Undiscovery is. Its a new RPG IP starting on a non-Nintendo, Sony platform with a fresh JRPG gameplay that focuses on exploration and environment interaction with real-time battling (right after the suckiness that was FFXII)! It's a pretty big deal actually! I cant wait. It looks like it's trying very hard to be a breakthrough title.

WHo knows,or he might just get too sick to carry on,or its a diversion,to fool them,or they just choose the same look for another reason.

Official Infinite Undiscovery Thread V2 Xbox 360s Most Ambitious J RPG Exclusive GameTrailers.com Forums

Well it seems pretty obvious from the Twins Trailer... Gameplay shows Capell in Sigmund's armor. Unless Sigmund retires, which is highly unlikely considering the circumstances, I'm going to say he dies. Plus Sigmund's voice speaking to Capell in a "Luke use the force." type of way near the end ("Capell, protect this world".) Possibly a flashback.

Was considering the possibility of sickness, or being paralyzed or something.

Just seems like death would be something they would go for.
