Do we need him? A simple question really.

If we take god as a literal god or the idea of god do we need him?

Do we need him for morality?

Do we need him as an example to live our lives?

Do we need to conform to his ideas?

I personally think that we do not need God as a source of any morality or way of living life. Cultures that pre-dated the earliest of echoing of prophcy/chrisitianity/gods formed their own versions of morality, so it is clear that moral thought has dervied from man.

Not that there is anything wrong with people taking something from god or living according to his values. Whichever one they may choose. A message of peace, tollerance, love thy neighbour are all good values but i do not think God is the be all and end for moral thought all nor is he vital for our own judgement.

No I know people don't need God for morality. In the end Moral choices aren't good because of a abitrary deity has ordained them so, but rather for inherently selfish reasons. The human mind is wired for self preservation, and a majority of this is though social contact thusly for social contact to be mutually benifical most of the "biblical" morals are assumed. If you stripe away all the BS you can boil the monotheistic religions (as well as just about every other religion on the planet) to the same basic rule, as I like to put it quoteing Bill S. Preston Esq and Ted Theodor Logen "Be excellent to each other." This should be common sense, if your not a dick, and your other fellow human isn't a dick then you will both be better off.

As for needing him for anything else....There are plenty of atheists/agnostics out there leading perfectly groovy lives(Myself included) so the answer to that should be clear.

Every person is different, and every person's need for a role model--a 'forgiving' omnipresent being, and a means of some sort of "beginning" or "creation" (for those who think in a linear manner, therefore cannot fathom the concept of a universe without a beginning or ending)--is different.

My view is that, god based morality might have some truth to it. Supposing that there is a god who implanted certain moral laws into the universe, then theoretically it would be a legit form of morality. HOWEVER non-god morality is completely artificicial, fictional crap. An atheist who says that for ex. murder is wrong, has as much justification as if I were to say bananas are morally wrong. Its completely invented and meaningless. Which is why many theists and even atheists (myself included) will say that atheist morality is a load of crap.

And as for the rest of the question about "do we need god?" well it obviously depends on what role god plays if any. If he created us and takes care of us in certain ways, then yea we do. If hes just a voyer, who sits back and does nothing then no we dont. And if he doesnt actually exist, then its a moot point, because we're doing alright as it is (well most of us anyways).
