What kind of cards do your customers use
Hi All,
I'm in the process of setting up an internet merchant account and the costs vary significantly depending on what sort of card the customer uses (Rewards cards, standard cards, etc...). In order to evaluate their bids, I need to estimate what percentage of my customers will use what sort of card. What percentage of orders should I expect to meet the qualified rate? Any suggestions? What do your customers use?

What kind of cards do your customers use
That will vary depending on what you're selling. If you're more B2B you'll see lots of corporate cards. If you're selling low dollar items, you'll see more check cards. High dollar items will see more rewards cards. Expect to see more and more rewards cards as card issuers are replacing regular consumer cards with them at a fast rate as they make more money from them.

There are 3 main types of card you could accept:
1. credt cards, typically Visa and Mastercard
2. charge cards, ie Amercican Express
3. debit cards, typically Visa and Mastercard
there are others but these will cover the vast majority of transactions

Thanks for the replies. Lets try to put some numbers to this. We will be selling a premium content membership for $4 per month (all consumers - there shouldn't be many business cards). What percentage of the visa/mc cards should I expect to be rewards cards? How about a ratio of visa/mc to amex/discover? I get that it will vary depending on specifics, but does anyone have any examples to help me estimate what I might see?

Visa and MasterCard should make up around 90% of your transactions with a ticket that size. I would expect most of those to be check cards or regular consumer cards.

Visa is predominate in the US, where as MC is more predominate internationally.
AMEX and Discover make up a small percentage, less then 15% combined.

We're pretty much b2b, and our stats are:
Visa 50%
MC 25%
Amex 22%
Disc 3%
If you are b2b, you can expect way more Amex orders than non-b2b businesses.
