What are the 5 most important elements in a successful website and how would you rate them?
Not meaning monetary value, yet this could be a factor but items such as design, functionality, etc.

I think Design should be high on the list. If you go to a site, and they have dancing babies and scrolling text, will you even stay to look at the content?

Design might make it look good, but it's pretty useless if people can't access the site, or use it. If it's not easy to use, people will also leave. And expandability is sort of a long term thing.
I really think there is no need to order things though, as one's just as important as the other.
Design is important when there's lots of competition, but if I'm looking for specific content, I honestly couldn't care less about the aesthetics.

the first thing one notices is the design, just like when you first meet someone you notice his outlook. Then you look for ways to reach what you actually wanted - the content. Here's the place for navigation. Finally, you reach the content and it better be composed in a way that makes it easy to understand.
I can't say which of these is of primary importance and which of secondary. I think they are all equally important. The absence of any of these components will make the visitor click the next link in the search engine's results page.

Here's what I would say:
1. Design (I do agree with this).
2. Accessibility/Usability
3. Content
4. Code (Validating)
5. Page Flow

ease of use and content are number one. if you have the information that people need, it can be all written in note pad without html, just simply text. and so long as its a unique source for quality information, you win.
design comes in a close second behind the tie for third place. although people will come for your amazing content (not too common these days, everyone has a site for something)
then probably speed
then idk, top four are the most important. i guess fresh content. but that should actualy be above speed. they're all ridiculously important though.
