Hi Does anyone know what is the best practice for linking to detailed information about a product.

for example, visit this page
http://www.newark.com/NewarkWebComme....jsp?N=1001787

If you click on any of the part number codes, that will take you to detailed imformation about a product.
However there are other hyper links in this page too, so will it be obvious to the customer that the part number link will take them to the detail page?

I guess i'm tryig to figure out what is the standard way to link to the product detail pages on ecommerce sites.

There is no standard way. If you get your potential customers to your product page you've done just fine. But I recommend using a link that contains the product name as it will help that page rank well in the search engines. Using the product name in the anchor text of that link is important as well.

i felt the product name would have made more sence too, but i have been told by a colleague that standard practice is to link to the product page via the order code.

I just wish there was some research or recommendations i could find somewhere to back up either my side or there side of this argument.

Who's standard? His? There is no standard. Customers have no expectations as to what a link should look like.

Well, there may not be a "standard" but there are conventions that are used at the majority of e-commerce websites. Of course there will be exceptions but...

1) Product name
2) Product graphic
3) Actual button or links specifically saying "Product Detail" or "More Information"
