i want to connect an optical cable to my ps3 from my amp, now is it a special type of optical cable (made just for the ps3) or will any one do the job

Needs to be the toslink variety.

Trouble is you'll get the problem where you have to manually switch the audio output setting each time you want to change to Optical or HDMI - you cant have both.

Toslink is just another name for a digital optical cable. Therefore all digital optical cables are also TOSlink cables.
