Password protected folders

I have a folder (ie. directory) on my hosting site that is labeled "private". Is there a way to password-protect this folder and its contents? So, when someone clicks on the link to this folder and its contents, they are presented with a pop-up to enter a User/Password. The User/Password won't change per user...it's for family & friends. I just want to keep out the general public. Any ideas?
