ftp help
hi all, i hope you can help me with this, i have been asked by a family friend to update their website for their business. i'm fine with the html, java, php mysql side of things, but is my understanding right, once i modify the html files i need to transfer the files using ftp transmission to the web server?
the ppl who previously updated the net, said to use a ftp program called wc-ftp something rather. i know nothing of ftp or much about servers. also i have to rewrite all the html script, which is a pain, as they have lost all of their original files.
any help on this, would be greatly appreciated
thanks
nick

You can try and ftp program such as Fillezilla! Just google for it, you will then need their ftp username and password details.
Also, this might have been better posted in a different forum. Like computer Helpdesk or something!

thanks mate, yeh i do have their username and password... but that's about it, i'm guessing it'll be automatic, like if i upload the files then i will automatically update the webpage, so long as the file names are the same, right?
yeh i wasn't too sure if i should post it here,
i think i'll repost in that computer helpdesk tomorrow if i get no more responses
thanks again

ftp help
Hello
Yeah when you replace a file on the server, it will update the site. FTP is really easy to grasp once you have used it a time or 2.
Basically it will show 2 windows one on the left and one on the right, the left is your computers view of all files and folders, and the right is the server view of all files and folders. In the center there will be 2 buttons with arrows facing toward the left and toward the right.
When you want to upload a file from your comp, you will highlight(click) it in the left column and click the arrow facing the right column. That will transfer the file. Or you can do the same in reverse if there is a file on the server you need to dload.
Hope this makes some sense. Various FTP software may be slightly different, but all the ones I have used work basically the same way.
Johnny
PS
A mod will move this post to the correct forum if they need it moved, posting the same question again may be frowned upon

You can also use the Windows FTP. If I remember correctly all you need to do is type ftp.domainname.com in the address/location bar.

Try connecting in your browser to
ftp.bonnets.com.au
You should see a "public_html" or "www" or "htdocs" folder
Double click the folder and you should see the HTML files. You can then upload and download files by dragging and dropping

it said i didn't have access then i tried the ftp thing and it said if i wanted to load startup.cmd. (but that file has been deleted so i can't see what was on it)
hmmm this isn't going to well, so i should be expecting to see a htdocs which would contain all the files for the webpage, similar to using Apache and PHP.

hmm i think i've been giving the wrong password i miss typed the password on purpose and it still let me go to the double screen page, but i have no access. i'm presuming i have been given the wrog password then, but the last person to update the net.
what do i do now?
if i had entered in the correct password, i would be able to view the files on the server right?
** edit i have no idea what's going on. if i type anything in for password. the ftp program seems to work, but when i click on LogWnd it says no password required. then if i enter the username with no password well it asks me for a password..
+ edit i can transfer the files across. but there are no other htm or html files, just *.cmd *.def *.ini

i reconstructed the whole website for them, but i don't know how to upload and refresh the pages. this is ftp thing seemed simple, simple click and replace the files... i suppose nothing is easy.
doesn't anyone know what start.cmd would be used for???

got it sorted now... it takes 5 mins for the password to be accepted, is this strange?
and how long should it take to upload a 6.6kb page? it's taken over 5 mins now, and doesn't appear to be doing, just prett lil flying pages from one folder to another.... but honestly more than 5mins for a 6kb page over a broadband connection, is something marjorly wrong here?
*edit, yes something was majorly wrong, how about click the ok button for transmitting the file
thanks all for all of your help, much appreciated
