Ive got a 26" samsung LCD HDTV, and 3890 an xbox360 connected via VGA.

Would i actually notice much difference with the HD-DVD drive? i sit either 5ft (at the PC) or 8ft (in bed) from the TV, and i cant really fault SD DVD playback to be honest

You may well not benefit from the increased resolution on a 26" screen but if you have a separate sound system with the appropiate inputs you could benefit there. Remember that HD DVD isn't just about the picture but the new Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby HD and DTS HD sound tracks are a big improvement on the SD versions. Plus some of the extras are pretty cool! The only time I really bothered with extra features was with HD DVD.

I have a Samsung 26" LCD and the HD DVD drive (connected to my PC) and i notice the difference between HD DVD and my other movies captured in HDTV (720p x264 f.ex). But i sit less than 2 ft away. I also have a very cheap "sound system", the Logitech Z-5400 5.1 Surround £100 and i can notice the sound quality too!
I am very happy with HD DVD and if it's this good at 26", i really look forward getting a bigger screen later this year.

I have a 26" sony hd tv and have just recently got the hd dvd player. There is a difference in PQ, its noticeably clearer although the difference is not that huge to make it a must buy for us 26" users. If you have the cash and a sucker for PQ then you wont go wrong buying one as it is at a bargain price for a hd dvd player.

yeah, i think that if, in the end HDDVD wins the format battle, ill buy one, but until then.. i dont think ill get the benefit

I think an entry level up-scaling dvd player such as a Denon, Pioneer or Toshiba would get you very very close on a small size screen for picture quality.
