ASUS A8N-SLI Skt 939 Motherboard & AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego - ?250inc P&P

Motherboard is around 9 months old, has no box but has most of the accesories with it, just the backplate missing right now, but I am sure it will turn up. CPU is almost new, bought around 8 weeks ago, has been used for only a matter of hours. CPU has never been overclocked (would 2798 have been had I found the time!!).

ASUS SK8N Skt 940 Motherboard, Opteron 248 (FX-51!), 3GB RAM & spare Opteron 140 - now ?200inc!!

Bought from Tottenham Court Rd in Oct last year at a cost of ?169.99 (that was the cheapest I could find it!!). This is supplied with original receipt for warranty purposes. I bought this as a replacement for a dead Gigabyte board to house my FX51. This is a very special motherboard, takes any socket 940 Opteron upto 250. Must use ECC REG ram but will take upto 8GB! Has every input /output known to man, with SPDIF /Optical in & out, Firewire etc.
If the asking price is met with this bundle I will throw in a spare (new, only used to test) Opteron 140 CPU free of charge! Both Opteron CPU's are new, only used to test.

ASUS CT479 Socket 479 - 478 adapter. Enables you to run a socket 479 CPU like Pentium M or Celeron M on certain ASUS motherboards. Makes for a very cool & quiet desktop. ?20inc

Interested in one of your bundles, just out of the game a touch at the moment, how does the Opteron compare to the Socket 939, is it inferior, will have to go off and do some reading.

An Opteron 940 is basically the sever spec Athlon CPU. It has a built in ECC REG memory controller along with a 1m cache. The board also enables ECC for more stability. Couple this with Cool & Quiet & Hypertransport technology & you have a very quiet & stable workstation. An Opteron 248 is basically an FX-51 gaming chip with the ability to run in pairs.

Inspite of the fact I already have an SK8N and an Opteron 140 with 4gb of ram, I'm interested in the bundle! What speed ram does it come with (need to find some justification for the purchase!)

I have a spare HTPC case and graphics card and feel another machine on the way.....

Hi Pete,

The RAM is all DDR266, but as it is top spec HP & IBM server ram, it will run much higher than that. The ram is in 2 x 1gb (IBM) & 2 x 512 (HP).

The CPU's are 1 x 248 2.2ghz 1mb and 1 x 140 1.6ghz 1mb for spare /backup. Both CPU's have been used for a few hours.

The motheboard comes boxed with everything that came with it i.e. loads of cables & PCI breakout bars etc. As you will already know this is a great mobo.

All of these items are currenty available new & would cost well over ?600.

Also, you will notice a huge increase in performace with the 248 over the 140! An Opteron 248 is an FX-51 in all but name.

Othger than the obvious speed increase I thought the only difference was the ability to use DDR 400 RAM.

Yes it can use DDR400 ECC Ram, but you would be lucky to get 2gb of it for the price of this whole bundle!

Apart from the speed (2.2ghz vs 1.6ghz) everything else is the same, yes.

At any point did you try overclocking this setup (as It 32E8 goes so well on this setup!) if so what results did you achieve?

I have not tried overclocking any of the Opterons, but I used to run my FX-51 with this Ram in the SK8N at 2.6ghz. At this speed the temps never went above 40o with air cooling. As the Opty 248 is the same CPU, I would expect similar results. I am however no expert overclocker, I simply used the ASUS automatic overclock feature in the bios. I have seen this CPU being run at 3ghz and above, but would have no idea how to achieve this.

Thanks for the offer, I will check what exactly comes with the board when I look in the loft shortly. I was having trouble finding the backplate, but this may be with the PCI brackets in the loft. I do know there is no box, instructions or driver disk present. If the board was bare i.e. OEM would you still be intrested?

Yes but it'll have to be the 333 one now (the other two have just sold!) - and you'll have to trust me on forwarding the ram as I need it for the minute - you have a couple of pm anyways.

Have you got the backplate? any cables?

I do not have the backplate. The bits that I do have are: SLI Bridge, standard cooler bracket, 2 x SATA cables, extra USB PCI plate. If you require any IDE or floppy cables I would happily supply some.

The CPU is without box but comes with a standard HSF.

I offered ?220 a little while back mate - but assumed that it wasn't acceptable. (see my original post above.)

He thought at the time that there was a possibility that it may be complete. As time has gone on, it turns out that it isn't. My offer of ?220 was unacceptable to him at the time I made it. This was even though I offered to collect it, so there would be no assc postage costs on his part.

I have since had a change of plan, so good luck with your offer anyway.

I could not find the back plate when I looked (briefly) yesterday, but I am sure it cannot be far? As for the board, yes it is the Premium version with the heat pipe jobbies.

If the back plate cannot be found, I would be willing to drop the price to say ?230, as I have seen replacements an a certain auction website for ?5 + P&P.

normally I would take you up as my girlfriend lives in harrow 3 miles from the M1/M25 junction but I was at her's yesterdfay and am not there again until Sunday. Sorry I am just battling with myself, there is no real reason why I need this, there is nothing wrong with the setup I alrady have, it just seems like a good price and I have a spare HTPC case and Dell 20" Widescreen, so would just need to source another Graphics Card and PSU.... Or is it just sepnding for the sake of it...

Will definitely decide at some point tonight, if it doesn't go in the meantime.

Not entirely sure? I think they need to be SLI capable cards? Maybe a regular one & a Master Card or something like that. The board comes with a bridge thingy to bridge the two cards together, so I presume the cards would need to have this connection on the side.

I bought it with this in mind, but never got round to it, only ever used a single X850XTPE in it.

if you use two Nvidia cards you need a bridge to join both cards , it used to be the case that you needed two indentical cards for them to work in SLI
Now with the newer drivers cards of different makes will work together
ie BFG and XFX

"Crossfire" is the ATI equivalent if you can call it that of SLI and there you do need a master card and compatible motherboard

The asus one the chap above is selling is suited to SLI so if you have a couple of Nvidia cards your sorted

The cheapest I have found the CPU is ?240inc & the board around ?110. I would come down to ?240inc for both but ?170 is way off. I would not accept that for the CPU right now!
