My PS2 Cant Read GameTrailers.com Forums
i was booting up a game and then my PS2 can't read it and it didn't start up. i gotta keep on pressing the reset button all over till it works. does anybody know a solution to fix this.
by the way mine is the fat PS2

Yeah the same damn thing happens with mine. If you actually call the Playstation Co. they will give you a refurbish one for like $40 I think?
anyways if you plan to buy a new ps2, just to tell you that the slim version can't read ps1 memory cards. So you can't save any of your ps1 game

Buy a new PS2, they're going cheap now. Or if you don't wat to do that, buy a DVD Lens cleaner (DVD with brushes on it) play it on your PS2 and try the game again

Dang, this is why i'm reluctant about buying stuff for my ps2, a machine i've had for about 7 years.

Well, you can look into a DVD laser cleaning disk:

Buuut, no console lasts forever, if it's been in a dusty enviornment for the whole time, it may not be able to clean the laser properly.

that happened to me in vice city it was cause the disk had like 100 scratches
either buy new game or if the disk isn't scratched don't ask me

Just buy a disk that cleans the lens. You can get em at WalMart pretty cheap. Makes it work like brand new again.

Well you could try cleaning the disc, it might of had to many scratches to read.
And the second and probably the one your going to want to try, it to open your PS2 up, and clean the lens. That's not to hard (you don't want her to say that to you!!) and just use some Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol to clean her up. And if that doesn't work, I think your PS2 might be done for (possibly not). I also have a fat PS2, have had it for over maybe 5 years. Still runs great!

Repair it, thats the best thing or get a disc scratch remover, if that don`t work then buy a new PS2.

It's already lasting longer then the slimline PS2 I had about a year ago. Damn thing died on me in the middle of a game and just kept giving me read errors no matter how much I cleaned it it kept failing

if it is slim version: just clean the lens with cotton buds and alcohol don't use cd/dvd cleaners it transfers dust from the tray to lens.
if fat: disassembly is required

Try getting a lence cleaning disc. I had the same problem with my PS2 but when I cleaned the lens, it worked as a charm.

Yeah, I've done that before too. It squeezed about 6 more months out of my PS2. The time I take fixing my PS2 is more than the time I get to play it, so it might be advantageous to just get a new one, or possibly a replacement laser. Thanks for the tip though, it will help a lot of other people with their PS2 phats.

Uggh this is seriously why Sony should include the backwards compatibility to the PS3. Listen to the gamers!
I've had my phat PS2 since 2001. It's running on dead. So many disc read errors. I've cleaned it countless times and used a heavy duty air compressor to get all of the air out too. It's hopeless. I guess I have to get the recent slimline PS2 that was released at E3 this year.

the problem is that its the old fat ps2. buy a slim one and you wont have that problem... my guess is that your trying to play a blue-bottomed disc too and they have trouble with the old ps2 over time

repairs will cost about as much as a brand new one
i am in the same boat as you buddy, i just followed a guide on the internet to repairing this very common problem.
as fat ps2's get old the disk tray gradually shifts out of position, all you have to do is open it up and reset the angle that it reads the disk at (very, very simple)
although i have to do it about every 6 months to keep it working

Did it fall down alot at all?like from a high place?My fat one was doing the same thing.First it would read blue discs which was fine because I only had 1 blue disc but then months later pretty much every disc didnt work.I can never get past the main ps2 menu.I did manage to play silent hill 4 somehow later on but not after that.
I just got a new one because after that I tried opening it up and cleaning that light part with alchohol and using diffrent kinds of methods of getting it to work it still never turned on.
