I'm about to get a new TV this weekend and I've done a bit of research; I'm either getting the 52" Samsung LE52M87BDX or the Sony KDL-46X2000. Both are 1080p sets. I have one question before I take the plunge: What do 720p games look like on a 1080p display? Do they still look good?

Funny... I was wondering the same thiing as i'm thinking of upgrading to 1080p soon... Some 720p HD sets look horrible for SD, does the same happen when you take the next step up, does 720p look horrible on a 1080 set??

Not sure about how 720 looks on a 1080 but i know SD looks worse on a 1080p set.

I own the 40" M87 and the PS3 looks out of this world at 720p so don't worry, everything runs beatifully with no motion blur or jaggies at all. You will not be disappointed and as far as I am concerned an absolute non issue.

Dont forget you would be feeding it with a good resolution to start with. The reason SD will look crap is because of the low resolution and the work the set has to put in to get it to fit.

Standard definition looks poor on 1080p screens because as Houghsx mentioned the resolution is relatively low so the image has to be scaled up quite a bit, but it's also an interlaced format so LCDs have to deinterlace it before they can display it which reduces the picture quality further (thankfully this doesn't apply to 720p).

As a Sharp XD1E owner I can safely say that 720p still looks very impressive on a 1080p screen and although I can tell the difference between it and 1080p, there's not a massive difference between them to be honest.

I have the 40M86 & the PS3 set its self to 1080p when i switched it on. All it does with 720p games is downscale them automatic. Then when you go back to dash board it flips back to 1080p.

I did download the VT3 demo and that does infact run at 1080p. Nice.

By the way i bought Fight Night today and i have to say it blows the 360 version away, very nice.
