Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

1. BioShock

The biggest controversy during our post-show discussions erupted while deciding our game of the show. Our two contenders were Fallout 3, which emerged from this year's show covered in post-apocalyptic glory, and Irrational's soon-to-be-released BioShock, the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2 that wowed us at last year's show. The heated "discussion" nearly resulted in a monkey-knife-fight between two editors and loud screaming from the rest. The fact that this was happening in a steak house in Culver City filled with families and now-traumatized children just out for a good time should attest to the depth of our passion on this issue. When the smoke cleared, however, it was BioShock that emerged victorious. We rounded up some of our editors to talk about what most impressed them in the game.

Allen 'Delsyn' Rausch, Associate PC Editor: One of the most tired debates in the gaming world is whether or not a videogame can be considered "art." While I won't presume to give a final answer on the topic, I will say that certain titles such as Planescape: Torment, Ico, Grim Fandango and System Shock 2 answer that question for me. Assuming the rest of BioShock holds up to the quality of the sections we've seen so far, then I'd say this game has every chance of joining that pantheon. It's very rare for a game to truly transport you to another world but during the first 20 minutes of BioShock I had as much fun reading the ads on the walls and drinking in the luscious Art Deco design as I did fighting against the mutated citizens of Rapture. This is a game where the setting itself tells the story and it's one I'm eager to explore more of.

Joynt: I don't get shell-shocked by games very often, but BioShock, after a few hours of getting to actually play, has me blown away. From the game's visual beauty to its subtle storytelling to its dedication to being a shooter but not being shoehorned into that genre's weaknesses, this is a game that is ready to raise the bar on so many levels that I feel like it really has no competition at the moment. Its only potential downfall is if it can't maintain the combination of artistry and visceral appeal over the course of the entire game, but I honestly don't think that will be the case. Based on the pedigree that Ken Levine and his team bring to the project and the quality of the gameplay I've experienced, this just isn't a game that I see stumbling.

The gameplay itself is so rich, with so many choices even in the very first and most linear level, that I see BioShock offering a lot of replayability. More importantly, the depth of the universe that has been built here is almost unbelievable. Details like where an underwater city would get its air aren't forgotten; it's been planned out and incorporated into the game as a mission, telling a story without clubbing you over the head with it. Although I love my long cut scenes, there's no question now that BioShock tells a story with every frame. It's going to be a long wait until August.

Sterling: Thank heavens for little girls. Otherwise, I wouldn't have lots of Adam to take on the army of howlingly desperate Splicers running amok in Rapture. The best thing I can say about BioShock is that it's a very difficult game to explain in a few sentences or less. "You're battling in a submarine Randian dystopia filled with paranoid mutants. Along the way, you'll need to make mutagenic upgrades to yourself in order to survive. The best, and fastest way to those upgrades is by finding mutated eight year-old girls..." Hey, come back!

While I would've had few objections to either this game or Fallout 3 winning best of show, I'm a bit satisfied deep down that more people got the chance to see BioShock this year than last year, when it narrowly beat Gears of War. While multiplayer is always strongly considered in our evaluation processes, sometimes you get a title that's indisputably great, single-player or multiplayer. This is one of those games.

Sluggo: Having already played through the opening levels of the game at a previous event on the Xbox 360, I was excited to finally check out the PC version at E3, which was conveniently sitting in the Microsoft games lounge where a ton of games like BioShock, Crysis and Gears of War PC were almost perpetually available to sit down and play. I was glad to see the PC version looks every bit as impressive as the 360 game -- maybe more so. As the others have mentioned, the art design is so unique that fighting the strange denizens of Rapture almost becomes secondary to soaking up the atmosphere and figuring out exactly what went wrong in this would-be utopia.

Maybe the best thing about BioShock is its upcoming August release -- rather than competing for our gaming time with 20 other amazing titles coming this holiday, we'll have a few weeks to soak it all in. August 21 can't arrive soon enough.

Warrior: Entering Rapture again after a year away was even eerier than the first time. Irrational has done a tremendous job of capturing the artistic feel of a utopia gone bad, from a dark brooding setting to enemies with insane personalities. The eeriness is reminiscent of System Shock and the calm, malevolent voice of Shodan following you everywhere. The echoes and other sound effects create an ambiance that nightmares are made of, and playing the game will have you jumping out of your seat. Add in the stylized gameplay elements of special powers and abilities to complement the traditional use of firepower and Irrational has created a game where goals can be accomplished in myriad ways. The same can be said for dispatching enemies.

No matter how you slice it, BioShock is deserving of the best game of this year's E3. I can't wait to get my hands on the final game in five weeks, after which you can bet that I'll be a rare sight in daylight.

Cannot wait for Bioshock and Cod4

Surprised KZ2 is not anywhere on there.

yeah I think it should be as well.

It's a bit strange though, it would seem that KZ2's impact seems to be over-estimated around here. It looks like it still has some work to do to prove itself to the general media...

Anything you hear seems to be good, but I just find it strange how little you actually do hear about it.

I think Bioshock could be deserving of this title, it's impossible to find a negative comment on it from anybody who has touched it. I know I'm looking forward to it as much if not more than anything else in the late summer early fall...until M.E. anyhow!

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

KZ2 and MGS4 weren't playable. Best of show is only for games that are playable. Hence why GT5 and FF aren't on there either (FF didn't show up anways).

I can't believe Bioshock is #1, COD4, Halo, Mass Effect any of those are better than Bioshock IMO. I'm not sure what it is, but that game just really isn't appealing to me at all.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

I see this as a result of a more extensive analysis and not a judgement over ethereal moments. Games like Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo will offer you a complete gamming experience, each in their genre.

I like your sig. Wouldn't that be funny if a multiplatform game best the "best" shooter that the 360 and PS3 has too offer. I must admit, I am more psyched for COD 4 than I am Halo 3.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

this is confusing, KZ2 should be on there, halo 3 was demoed behind closed doors but noone was able to play it, I do however agree that people on this forum overestimate the impact KZ2 had at E3, halo 3 has been ahead of it on ign ever since E3, gamespot too from what ive seen.

Fallout 3 was there and running on the 360&PC.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Im buying 7 of those titles. Agree with the list although LBP should be a bit higher. These KZ2 replies are amusing me though.

well cmon, killzone got alot of attention at E3, not as much as people in here think, but I think it deserves a top 10 spot, maybe it didnt get one for the simple fact that they didnt really say much about the game.

I think it didn't get the attention it deserved through childish games from Sony. If they showed it during their keynotes it would of had more attention. But like someone said its about playable games, but that doesnt explain Fallout as someone also said. Rock Band shouldn't be in that list and especially not above LBP.

Bethesda had a whole theatre presentation with Fallout ... just because you didn't hear about it, doesn't make it non-existant.

That's a positive attitude towards Aquanox... considering you're one of the more bias folk around these forums.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Bioshock. More so than ever, now.

Thanks for the clarification. I was surprised not to see KZ2, but then you explained the situation.

Mass Effect GTA IV BioShock will RULE 2007!

I don't know about that. As far as I know, Fallout 3 wasn't more playable than Killzone, neither was Mass Effect. All 3 of them were demoed by the developers but I don't recall anyone saying they actually played them... Fallout in specific.

So you are implying Killzone 2 and MGS4, for example, won't do the same?

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Finally some good news for the 360, it seems as if there are more bad news than good news lately.

It is a gaming trajedy that Heavenly Sword isn't on there. Those people lost all credibility for omiting perhaps the best title at E3. Bioshock and Mass Effect are of course on the very top of my most wanted list right now, both look like they are going to be classics. Because of the gameplay involved, not the graphics even though both are incredible looking.

But Heavenly Sword is God of War on steroids with a combat system that far exceeds even that game and will throw you in an adventure that looks 2nd to none at the moment. Should have been on that list easily.

But yeah, this is best of show thread. Not best PLAYABLE at E3. So its whatever games were around.

So that list is pretty bad really.

1.) Heavenly Sword
2.) Bioshock
3.) MGS4
4.) Mass Effect
5.) Killzone 2
6.) Rock Band
7.) Little Big World
8.) Lost Oddysee
9.) COD4
10.) Ratchet and Clank

Halo 3 doesn't even register with me right now. The single player of 2 was horrible, that is why. The online is just yet another online shooter with little differences between it and Battlefield 1942. Hell even Battlefield 1942 was more engrossing. Halo 2 was just the best online FPS ... perhaps the only real online FPS on the Xbox so it got overdramatized by those who owned the game. Halo 3 is becoming a pretty sad story in my opinion. I have the legendary edition pre-ordered and may throw that away.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Oh wow, not enough PS3 games on teh list and sony fans boo hooing.

And maybe KZ2 is not on the list because of that fact that even though it looked really good, but gameplay wise more of the same.

MGS4 didn't make it because they only showed a trailer.

Maybe HS is just another God Of War, been there done that.

Who knows, but the game on that list had impact on them so respect it and don't cry about it.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Read this article posted at gamespy and then tell me they are non-biased.

Definately an unbiased gaming/news site. And true Billdo Bender material.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Been there done that? Ummm .. Halo 3 makes the list yet we've been there and done that a billion times. That sort of defense makes no sense.

I just didn't see that list as worthy of being the only one in this thread. Just because you work for a magazine doesn't give your opinion the PERIOD power.

Maybe Halo 3 is just another Halo, and if it is then it will suck, just like 2. Maybe Call of Duty 4 is just another Call of Duty. Been there done that a billion times, next. Maybe Legend of Zelda is just another Legend of Zelda. Been there done that with almost no storyline changes, next.

Sadly enough more then half that list is the alien shooter or FPS genres. Seriously gamers need to learn to expand their horizons a little bit lol. Gaming is becoming so **** stale its almost hard to watch it happen.

Mass Effect, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddysee, Ace Combat 6, Eternal Sonota(Sonata?), Beautiful Katamari, Viva Pinata, Devil May Cry 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Bully, Project Sylpheed, etc. are the games I'm looking forward to. FPS's are just becoming way too overcrowded with the same ****.

Ace Combat 6 looks really good, but I have never played any of the previous ones. Does the series have a good track record?

Kotaku did a similar "Best of E3". Apparently they must have played some sort of version as both Mass Effect and Fallout were playable and ranked. Mass Effect fell behind both MGS4 and Killzone 2 as far as graphics as honorable mention.

Halo 3 was being played behind closed doors. So I'm pretty sure this was based off of playable games.

And? Thats the crappiest reason to not put a game in the best of E3 list. Its MGS FFS!

P.S. Mal, I didn't get worked up over anything, I just asked a question. His insinuation was truly pathetic, so don't try to spin it and make me look like the bad guy. I've had enough of that in the last couple of days already

Whens its release date again?

I'd very much advise you to plop down the DS money for a PS2 then. There is no better gaming then that found on the PS2. Most of the best games are now 20$ or less so its not like it will break your bank to get one.

Ace Combat has always been a stellar series. They slipped up once but thats it. Every other Ace Combat has been amazing.

Don't look at Ace Combat as a realistic war game either. The series is more about a different world altogether set on Earth then our actual world. So you may be flying around in F-16's but eventually ( just play the demo of 6 ) you will go against some otherworldly stuff that is pretty far out there in terms of possibility. Really breaks away from the realism factor when your fighting against football field sized air tankers and attacking massive fotresses.

The game is known for dogfighting but also for attacking ground targets and watching ground battles as well. It usually has good replay value considering the amount of planes you end up being able to play in and theres always a multiplayer mode where you can dogfight against someone else.

It is a great game to hit the 360 thats for sure.

How did you manage to play all those games already lol, i think your LYING

lol some are showing their true skins. Is that list some kind of proof that the noise about Killzone 2 is undeserved like some of y'all are insinuating? if so you guys are trying way to hard to downplay that game and ironically your efforts should be proof of Killzone 2's impact at E3.

Gamespys best of show E3 Bioshock Fallout Mass Effect

Are you daft? Killzone 2 wasnt playable... and prob wont be out til after next years E3

But Halo wasn't playable either was it? I was watching gametrailers.com for their best FPS of E3 and they said they ruled out Killzone 2 and Halo because they weren't playable at E3...but yet it stilled made the list while Killzone 2 was shafted? Oh well.
