NZ PS3 launch created unprecedented sales
Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand this week confirmed results affirming the successful launch of the PlayStation 3 which officially went on sale in New Zealand on 23 March.
Since launch, the PS3 has generated over NZ$6.8 million in hardware and software retail sales, according to analyst group GfK.
Commenting on the results, Daniel Morse from GfK stated, "Our data revealed that in a matter of just ten days the PlayStation 3 created a ***** in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in New Zealand. This spending continued in to the second week of trading resulting in sales of 4,835 PlayStation 3 consoles in just ten days."
In addition to the positive hardware results, GfK data from the launch week of PS3 (w/c 19 March) ranked SCE New Zealand's first party software titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, as the two highest selling games. "Since launch, PS3 games have dominated GfK sales charts taking out all of the top ten places (console and handheld)," stated Mr Morse.
Warwick Light, General Manager Sales & Marketing of Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand, commented: "Following a great launch for the PS3 across the country, it's very satisfying for us to see that our close planning with retail and channel partners has ensured that all consumers wanting to get their hands on a PS3, whether they pre-ordered or not, were able to. With the PS3 now realised, the strong consumer support to date indicates that we've had a successful platform launch and are at a great starting position for us to grow and develop the PS3 platform."
Not to be outdone by its new sibling, the seven-year-old PlayStation 2 continues to grow its installed base, with the introduction of the popular pink version in March helping to boost sales. "Our combined data for the month of March positions the PlayStation 2 (black) console second to the PS3 as the next highest selling console, with PlayStation 2 Pink and PlayStation Portable rounding out the top four giving PlayStation a clean sweep for the month," stated Morse.
"Having three platforms selling strongly in New Zealand clearly demonstrates that PlayStation products are true category and technology leaders. The continued success of the PlayStation 2 offers an insight into our vision for the PS3: to have a platform that in ten years' time offers a diverse range of entertainment options enjoyed by the whole family, playing a significant role in the living room and home," said Mr Light.
In addition to a large scale advertising campaign in popular media, SCENZ has concentrated marketing efforts on ensuring customers are able to 'experience' the PlayStation 3.
Light concludes: "At a retail level there has been a significant investment in interactive display units to ensure interested consumers are able to explore the product. Through this interaction and demonstration, people will truly appreciate the value of our product offering. Combining games, photos, music, movies and the Internet, the PS3 is the ultimate entertainment hub in the living room. With the ability to have its functionality expanded through on-line upgrades, PlayStation 3 will be relevant for at least the next 10 years."

NZ PS3 launch created unprecedented sales
That's great to hear... just proves what I have been saying: if Sony had enough PS3s at the launch in Japan and the US, it would have outsold the 360 and, quite possibly, the Wii. It was b/c people couldn't get a PS3 that they spent their money on the 360. Parents went out looking for a system to put under the tree and the only one available was the 360. Then, having spent hundreds of dollars on the 360 and assorted games, how many people really had another $800 ($600 plus $150 to $200 for games)? Next holiday season will really show which system is more desirable and I will bet it's the PS3.

Lol yeah.
Considering we got 5000 at launch that is pretty good. Entirely Sony? No. Pretty damn close? Yes. Some people still like to think it's Xbox country though.
I beg to differ

Well yes, 10 days is over a week, so I kind of assumed that. You almost sounded surprised that sales carried on for a second week there!
I wish people wouldn't just blindly post PR and say 'that's cool'. Having worked with PR people, they are paid to spin anything to make it look good and they're pretty clever at it. For example, if you read between the lines a little bit, if DigitalX is right and 1 in 3 households have a PS2, and New Zealand has 1.4m households then I would have thought the conversion rate would have been higher than 4,835 during its launch period.

Sony seem to be using the "sales" thing as spin.
It sold 4835 x $1199 =$5.8 million
So they sold a further $1 million in periphials and game or roughly 8403 games, or 1.7 games per console....
Hmm Fall Of Man and Motorstorm??? By chance.

C'mon man, cut 'em a break. What company doesn't spin? And Motorstorm and RFOM could indeed help all those sales. Not to mention all the Blu-ray, Remotes, and extra controllers that were sold.
Virtua Fighter 5, and Ridge Racer 7 were also popular sellers.
But fine. Each his own.

Hey, I'm just interpretting the figures, but an attach rate of 1.7 (assuming that they didnt buy any periphals) is quote low.
You'd think if they can afford the console, they could afford more than 2 games....
From memory the 360 did 5000-7000 units, but I'm being vague, and I cant find any articles on it now.

That doesn't really make sense to me.
If I hadn't imported my PS3, I would've only gotten 2 games MAX! (It would've been more, but games were being kept 'delayed'). A lot that do get more, put it on some layby.
1.7 low? I thought that was 'decent'. Not saying you're wrong. I just remembered that both the Japanese and NA launches had less than one! So 1.7 is a huge improvement. And like I said, apart from MotorStorm and RFOM, a lot of the games are delayed.
As for 360, that would also depend on supply. PS3 supply was only about 5000 max. So it would've been a little hard to surpass that.
