Is there a way to make just part of an image transparent?

yes. depending on what image editing software you have, it should be fairly easy to create something that's only partially transparent and saving it as either GIF or PNG (as those formats support transparency).

Thanks for the reply,redux.
However I dont think I made myself clear. I dont want a partialy transparent image,I want an image a part of which is transparent. For instance I have a square divided into six parts and want just the central squares transparent.
Hope I made this clearer.
Thanks.

If you are using photoshop keep the area and the background transparent and choose save for web option and check the transparancy option in gif settings.

Thanks matrix neo.

does that mean I need to slice the image?

No need to slice the image at all.

In Photoshop:
1. Choose New... and make the proper size, and background transparent.
2. Draw your image (or copy from somewhere else). The transparent parts of the image will be easy so spot, because of the checkered background in Photoshop.
3. If the copied image isn't transparent, use the eraser and remove those parts. (or use the magic marker and then delete)
4. Save for the web... pick GIF or PNG, set the number of colours, check transparancy, then save.
