which is better for designing a web site?

php, c++ or perl or?

generally i wanna go for c++ cause i will be learning this anyway. perl i heard is slower. php interests me alot though.

generally whats the pitfalls of c++ and what can and what cant i do?

generally i dont want a slow site.

if i go the c++ route what is this .net thing. this is c++ for the web? or no?

sorry for all the questions. im more of a cut and paste/graphics web designer but now i feel i must actually learn a programming language. c++ im defianltly taking because of game design. i also seen their isnt alot of info on c++ and the web. the only thing ive seen script wise is at hotscripts.com. though if somone suggests otherwise why i should learn an additonal one please let me know. my web sites are generally gaming web sites http://www.dead-again.net and http://www.rnet-online.com

well thats it. thank you for your time

I personally php would be the language to go....it's cross platform and almost all web servers support it.

C++ is not really used for the Web any more.

If you're learning C++ anyway, then PHP should be a piece of cake for you. The syntax and structure is very similar.

Perl is a very good language as well and more useful for the web than C++. Most CGI scripts are written using Perl.

I have done all of those, php, perl and c++.

Personally I would recomend php over any web developement enviroment!

Reasons why:

perl - very hard to debug
c++ - a very difficult language to pick
php - easy, free, lots of support, does anything any other scripting lanuage does

My websites the are done in php are

http://v-resources.com
http://v-redirect.com

Hope that helped..

My site used to be Perl based but is now PHP. Much friendlier for the web, not really a competition anymore.

Perl isn't all that hard to debug. I'm not quite sure where you got that from. Its error messages are clearly-worded, and PHP, IIRC, copied a few.

PHP doesn't have advanced debugging capabilities like Perl's debugger; also, in Perl, you can spit out your code as the interpreter sees it, to iron out any really hard problems.

My advice is to go with whichever language you like most. It sounds like you have decided on PHP...that's a good language, as are the others (although C++ is pretty bad for the Web).

well i quess c++ for the web is out. lol.

alot of my scripts are in perl. mainly newspro and a ubb. so i quess i learn that. php looks real good and i have it on my server so ill learn that too mainly.

but question is-

where to start?

can i do most of what i need in notepad? or anything special i need to know or have or editor?

prefer to handcode as its more pro and more control. just slower.

well thanks everyone for your input. generally i am gonna study perl to squeak by and tweak and hack my perl scripts but php wins my vote.

again thanks

PHP is a much better language for web development than Perl imo. For example, I had to write a perl script last Friday at work, and it took me forever to figure out how the hell to do nested hashes in perl. Perl is really much more dirty than PHP and seems to be a collection of hacks and shorthands instead of good function-based programming like PHP. Perl scripts just seem far less elegant to me.

You don't need to go with C++ to design a fast website which can work on most platforms.

PHP is a very good language for the web and I would strongly recommend it.
