I cant be responsible if you choose to destroy this site

Hey Guys and Gals!

Check out GarlicInfo.com -- the site is entirely made up of content from SitePoint.

I emailed the guy several days ago asking him to take it down, but no luck.

I tried contacting his hosting company, I talked to someone through their live-chat feature, who told me to use a sales form on his site to contact the abuse department (I doubt they have one). Needless to say, the form didn't work and he told me to "try again later". I don't think the webhosting company is going to do anything about this pirate...

I can't be responsible for someone tries to take down this site

That's just low. It's one thing if you link to it, but to actually post it on your own server? Come on.

They are in New Zealand, we're incorporated in Australia... anybody got $20,000 lying around in a bag somewhere to pay our lawyers? It's not like they would have money to pay us anyway. It's a one-man operation on a shared server.

Matt Mickiewicz

We were just kidding Matt. It's another aweful situation and I experienced tons of these, the only thing you can do is contact the owner of the website/domain or try more at the host.

JMulder

This probably isn't the first, and it probably won't be the last... It's sad that this needs to happen, especially since SitePoint is full of unique content, not redistributed content...

That is shameful, lucky for them I can't seem to find any of my work anywhere, I wonder how they would like to be sued by a multi-million coorporation such as my employer?

Wow, imitation the finest form of flattery? Hummm, I think not (obviously the originator of that quote never thought about cheep imitation...).

Anyway, if you do a search for these articles' titles in Google, that site shows right behind SitePoint--I don't know about other engines. Gosh, who ever did this certainly did a number on you. Wasn't that domain listed once when you were posting expired domains in a newsletter, too? I hope you can get this thing down soon.

Also, it seems to be a real modgboge of a bunch of different sites, if you have a gander at the source, there's a few tags from SearchEngineWatch, too. Also, who ever did it knew enough to remove the FrontPage generator tags, but not the rest of the MS tags (I always think that's funny...).

Well -- I have found one humorous aspect to all of this. I about keeled over laughing when I saw the site; what is that? -- a blue table?

<sarcasm />Now that is a site I would definitely use if I needed increased traffic! No design and lack of proper grammar. I'm sold.

Aes

I cant be responsible if you choose to destroy this site

What beautiful design this site has, it makes you wonder if THEY wrote the articles. That banner ad at the top of design is like the golden star on top of a finely crafted Sears x-mas tree.

When surfing www.garlicinfo.com I feel as though I have been in Cuba for several months, guided by seven supermodels. My silver-plated bucket of arctic-cold Corona beer nestled within the hot sand.

Coherent Section of this Post:

They get an average of 36,959 hits a day! Most of this traffic is coming from Google, but they also rely on warez and sex sites for traffic. (What a credible source!)

Also of interest 99.87% of people do not get past the main page of this site!

In total ripped-off Sitepoint articles have only suffered about 300 page views since the site's inception.

Matt, a letter written by a lawyer will often scare people into compliance. And it isn't $.

By the way, if this thread were to *vanish* - it might be a good thing.

i dont think rackspace would take down the site tho, as they are not responsible for the garlicinfo site, that is gnx-servers responcibility, as rackspace would only be providing gnx with the server. The terms of service therefore arent with garlicinfo

iTec

Just use mod_rewrite to block all image calls from websites outside of the SP Network. I'm surprise this isn't already in place.

RKuhle

I cant be responsible if you choose to destroy this site

Don't worry we have been planning a suprise for all these bandwidth thieves for a while now, and yes it will be with mod_rewrite. You would be amazed how many people steal our images, from both sitepoint and the forums.

Excellent! I suggest you do the old trick that is used over at somethingawful when people are stealing bandwidth in this fashion:

Change the picture to the goatse man, or equally disgusting picture.

[edit: advisor justifyingly removed link fo goatse, so I changed it into it's name instead. Most people know what page I'm taling about anyway - and if you don't - consider yourself lucky.]

I thought that the intended outcome of this thread? As Matt said, suing them isn't going to happen seeing as how they blatantly have no money. And there is pretty much nothing that can be done to stop him doing it again with someone elses site.

It is just a shame that the host doesn't seem to care. You'd think this was a violation of their TOS somewhere.
