Newb here how to prompt user for password to access HTML page

I've been using Dreamweaver for a few years now to build primarily static and very simple dynamic sites. I have a need for a simple method which would require a visitor to enter a password (and possibly a username?) when they attempt to access a particular .htm page by clicking on a link in the website. Basically, a user is browsing thru the site and wants to view a particular webpage and clicks on a link to open the page. I would like a window pop-up prompt requesting a password and/or a username. Once the password and/or username is provided and submitted, if the password/username is validated against a list of usernames/passwords for a given webpage, then that user is granted access to the webpage and the webpage then opens in the browser.

I am not particularly interested in asking or requiring users to actually go thru a registration process. I'm more interested in setting specific password and/or username combinations for specific webpages and then providing those to people who should have access.

I'm not familiar with PHP or MySQL, but am willing to learn. I have reference books on both and my Host (I'm a reseller for HostForWeb.com) offers MySQL. And, I'm not familiar with any scripting languages. So, the easier the better.

Any recommendedations?

Thanks from a scripting/programming newb!

Welcome to the forums bkctech!

You cannot really password protect an HTML page. Server coding (ASP, .NET, PHP) would be a lot more secure. The Gateway seems to be somewhat popular with a lot of people, but as with all JS, it is easy cracked.

Also, you might check with your hosting company to see if they support some server side program that will protect certain folders on your website
