How to do basic online publishing.

Hello,
I administrate for a group of designers and developers, and I myself am not a designer or developer. I would like to learn the basics of web design and associated skills, particularly with regards to upload websites and labelling files to publish them on the web.

Does anybody know of any specific tutorials that deal with how to go about uploading and understanding the correct directory structure on the server.

Eg. I am frequently sent Jpeg files and I need to organise them and label them nicely so they are viewable on the web so that clients can see them.

The tools that I have got are
1. Dreamweaver
2. Photoshop (never used it before)
3. Front Page

All suggestions would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

My best suggestion, commweb, would be to download an FTP program such as FileZilla, then do a search for FileZilla tutorials.

Oh right thanks, the problem is that I have alot of knowledge but is very very general and not deep. For example one of the designers was not knowing this in detail, today we did not know quite the proper folder to put the site in to make it visible, and did not have deep enough knowledge about file pathways.

Thanks for the tips I'll investigate that. The secret is to find a very "focused" kind of tutorial I think.

I would just check out web development sites, sitepoint may have some good tutorials, and also webmonkey.com. I started designing sites through these kind of tutorials. But for your jpeg files, most people usually store their webpages in a home directory, and then use a subdirectory (sometimes labeled 'images') to store all their pictures. E.g.-- http://www.yoursite.com/images/me.jpg. That helps keep your home directory from overcrowding. Hope this helps.

Not sure I am understanding you correctly, but the index page has to be at the root of the web folder. Your host should be able to let you know which folder on the server the site files should go.
