What does Urchin do differently than ecommstats.com ? I just joined them a month or two ago & had someone put all that code on my pages <sigh>

I wanted Urchin from years ago, but it was tooo expensive.

Thanks

Hmmm. I have some stats working now. Pretty darn nifty. It's very, VERY good to be free.

Good thing I said something, otherwise you guys would be complaining for days.

It's not as good as I thought it would be, everythings loads very slow, nothing that I don't have with AwStats, I don't think I would pay for it.

Yes, it's a little slow, but probably something Google will address soon. They're usually pretty good about stuff like that.

Maybe they really didn't expect this much attention with it. I'm not sure how they could justify that though, considering the fact that they ARE Google.

Supposedly it is supposed to track your adsense and give you stats on that too?

I'm not getting any when I go to the ROI pages even though I have adsense.

Then again, it says it doesn't have stats yet even though it does, so maybe it's still collecting the adsense information.

I remember shelling out alot of money for the server-side Urchin. It was great until you ran the log analyzer to update the stats, CPU usage shot up. Other than that, it's probably one of the best analytics programs I've used. Great to hear it's free now. Thanks Google!

Its a good and intelligent move by Google really.

Stats control area was very much needed in their web services kitty and they have done that .One more relvant thing which they must go for is "Monitoring Services" .It will really help them to become more equipped and complete.

Some alternate to Payapal and eBay is also very required and it will suit their business model quite well .I love Google , they have made the internet juicy really !

a) last I checked, awstats doesn't tell you what monitor resolution your visitors are using, or let you track conversions, or integrate with adsense, etc... i still use awstats on my own server because it's nice and up to date and fast; but there's no way you can learn as much from it as you can looking at a Google Analytics report every week or so
b) it's free, so you don't pay for it

I'm a little bit ignorant about some programming issues, so I was wondering if someone here might be willing to help me out.

They say that you need to put their code on every single page of yours. We have thousands, so that would take me forver...do I really need to do that to get sitewide stats?

What is strange is that my index page doesn't have a [head, /head] thingy, only certain other pages do from what I see. Is there anyway for me to screw up my scripts if I make a little head and scripts thing of my own? I'll back everything up first, but I was wondering what this head thing is and where would be a good place to put it.

I would ask my webmaster to help me out with this, but he has been very busy and a bit grumpy lately, so I would kind of want to try and sort this out by myself if possible.

All websites need a head section, it a very basic concept of HTML that should always be used. In order to add the code to all of the pages without much work, use the Find and Replace tool in programs like Dreamweaver.

if he's using a CMS and trying to look at the index it might be showing him the main page instead?

Just one correction: Awstats can monitor resolution. It comes with a JS you can put in the <head> section and you need to add something to the config file to enable it (there's a FAQ entry on awstats.sf.net and README that comes with the package).

Still, I'm a stats ho, and the more numbers I get, the merrier.

I'm getting these graphs now in Analytics although it still says that it's gathering data, but when I click on, say, the pie charts, I don't get any textual description of the slices. Does it require any plugins? I'm in Firefox Linux w/ every browser plugin installed except for bloody Shockwave.

It would be really great if Google were to give away the "Urchin" software as well. I have gigs & gigs (& gigs!) of old logs that I would love to run through that program...

It's not too terribly expensive- most of the larger hosts have deals with Urchin so they can offer Urchin to their customers on dedicated boxes for like a buck a month or something. You could probably get a really cheap dedicated server for $50-60, opt for Urchin on install, and then process them that way. A lot cheaper than the original cost of the software.

Yeah! My stats are here!

Can anyone find the screen that overlays click data on your site? I can't seem to find it, maybe someone can tell me exactly where it is? or is it disabled?

SRTech

Urchin renamed to Google Analytics and becomes FREE

For the record, AWStats does tell you what resolution they have. And a few other nifty things. It just requires a javascript include which I forget now.

Granted though, It doesn't have any adsense integration.

The big plus for me with AWStats is that it doesn't require the user to have javascript (unless you want the above mentioned features). I still use Mint though.

I can't find it anywhere either. I saw it there yesterday (before my stats were showing) but today the menu option for it is gone. It was called "Site Overlay."

According to this screenshot it was in the menu under Content Optimization -> Navigational Analysis -> Site Overlay.

Does google start new/bought services but develope them no more? That happened with google groups. And Analytics needs more work.

Great to see that I can finally start moving away from my own stats applications hogging up my CPU and memory at night time.

Thanks Google. Ive been waiting for years for this. So far, it looks pretty good. Now, if only I could figure it all out. Theres some pretty detailed stuff in there.
