Connection to internet Underclocked
Hi, I have a US Robotics 56k Voice Win modem, and everytime I log on to the net through my DUN for MSN, I either have a bad connection or a good one, but I am judging by what the two little computers that pop up when I get online. 75% of the time I get on at 48K, but sometimes, like now, I get on at real low, now i'm on at 12k, but I don't notice any difference from the 48k. Msn should be providing me a 56k connection. Maybe my modem is underclocking the connection. Another thing about 5 times since I formatted and reinstalled on 12\16\01 sometimes i'll log on at 48k or the usual real low one, and I can't do anything. I posted this in another forum a long time ago, and someone said that my connection was so bad that my computer thought that I was off line. What could be causing these problems. Thanks!

One thing you may want to try is to see if you can get a long cord to go from your modem directly to the Phone Box (NID) outside and see what speeds you get. This would bypass inhouse wiring and go directly to the phone company's wiring itself. I've done this at a few places that wiring was suspect and it was able to prove that a walljack run directly from the NID to the computer area would more than likely fix the issue.

The phone line in this house is about 20 years old! I don't guess that would have anything to do with it, eh? LOL! I just found that out!
The phone line from the jack to the computer is about 6 inches long, because I haven't attached the jack to the wall, so I only needed the 6" cord.
I'll go try that string thing you were mentioning, and see if it works. Thanks alot for all your great help!

Lets take this one at a time. The init string S32=44 disables the pre-v90 56k protocol from USRobotics called x2. ( pronounced ex-two). I've seen many USR modems that have speed issues due to x2 interfering...just like the other pre-v90 protocol K56Flex interferes with v90 at times in other brand modems. Basically to simplify it for you - you're removing another possible reason for problems. IF you want to know where to put the init string go to www.vee90.net and click on the Init String tab and it will tell you.
Now you're giving more details than you did before... if your 56k connect speeds vary more than on or 2 notches (each "notch" is 1333bps) then there's a good chance you've got line impairments, old drivers or both. Make sure your phone line is 10feet or less going directly to the walljack from the modem (not through a surge protector or splitter). If this does not help you may want to remove everything from the phone system at your location except the modem every time you connect. And if you still see the problem then you should be contacting your ISP for other alternative access numbers, because at that poing more than likely the problem isnt anything you're going to be able to control. Its going to be in the way your local telco is routing your call. One way of testing this is to try dialing a long distance access number for your ISP using a dial around LD code..like 10 10 220 or 10 10 321. This "pops" you over to the Long Distance circuty and shoudl give you a cleaner connection..if you get higher speeds with this its almost certain your local telco's switching is causing you speed issues.
The netscape download test tests your Data Transfer Rate aka through put (thru-put). In stating that you couldnt really see a difference browsing the web at the low speeds and at the high speeds you were saying you felt something was wrong with your thru-put at the higher speeds. This test will prove if there is something wrong there.
As for zone alarm. I explained myself pretty well in the last post. If you are wanting me to help, i dont care if the problem existed before or after ZA was installed. I've had 2.5 years experience with ZA in its various forms to know that if it doesnt look like its interfering, it actually is at some level and exiting out of it or uninstalling it will give you the most accurate test results possible.

Ok, what is this s32=44 or what ever it was. It disables X2?? What is that? And downloading Netscape, what will that do? Just curious. I haven't kept a log of my connect speeds, but I do know that my highest connection is 48K and I havent gotten above 20k except for the 48k I get sometimes, but just now when I logged on, I have a connection of 38k. This is real strange.
Zone Alarm. I have noticed if I want to get on to the MSN Gaming zone, I have to disable Zone Alarm, because other wise I'll get 500+ errors! I have had these connection problems before Zone Alarm was installed. Thanks

Well... Reading your "system specs" that you have at the bottom of your message It is possible that zonealarm could be causing some problems with your "not getting anywhere" situations.
Anytime I'm working with a customer to check something out I have them either uninstall or exit zone alarm to ensure that it does not interfere with our tests.
As for your 48K & 12K connection speeds I would first like to know if you've kept track of the time of day when the 12K connections happen. It is possible there could be a pattern.
You could try using the init string of S32=34 (this disables x2 and leaves v90 there...just in case x2 is interfering...this works sometimes).
Also you're going to want to try removing everything from your phone system except the modem/computer you're working with to see if this causes any differences. Many times other devices can be causing interference on the phone system and thus interfere with your modem.
Since you think the 48K connection speed is not any different from your 12K connect speed do the following test with your 48K connection & your 12k connection Remember Make sure you uninstall zone alarm or exit out of it to ensure maximum results.
Connect to the internet normally, record your connect speed and download then download netscape 6.2.1. (this is just a test...by no means do you have to install it). Click HERE to download netscape
You need to stay at your computer the entire time to record the transfer speeeds. Record the first speed you see and do continue to do this every 5 min.
Once finished (utilizing IE) you would get an "average" transfer rate and time (i think). You need to record this as well.
I'll need you to post the times & results in order to evaluate them for you.
