Seeing as this is a predominately I.T based forum I know a few people off here that are in the industry I'm just interested to know how many calls you get off of people trying to sell you stuff!

Cheers

The problem is that many Sales people care more about making their commission than providing a better and/or cheaper business solution to their customer. Which is fine, I suppose, but may explain why so many are told where to go or are simply hung up on

Most of the business we get is people coming to us!
Reason I posted the thread is because I spoke to one gent earlier who was particularly rude and came out with "Do you realise how many of these calls I get a day!!", the funny thing was I wasn't even calling to sell him anything!

Are the rest of the sales people in the I.T industry really that simple and annoying that the rest of us that are actually talking about something useful suffer!!

I know what it's like being on the other end of the stick when someone says "Can I speak to the person who deals with your mobile phones" in their boring monotone voice to "upgrade your downgrade to minimum grade and regrade you to a grade that is higher than your current grade for only ?10.99 a month"...But when you actually do need something or could use something better whats the problem!!??
You could argue that if people needed something better/cheaper then they'd be looking for it and would have probably found it by the time you've called.

If somebody wants something cheaper they'd have probably been searching for a fair while, unless you just miraculously time it and they go "How did you do that, I was just thinking about changing the tarriff on my mobile phone!"

How many times has your Indian takeaway phoned you up and you said "Wow you know what, I was just thinking of having a takeaway."

Your local undertaker doesn't phone you up each week just to make sure nobody has died or to tell you he's got a special deal on coffin's this week.

All sales calls are by definition annoying. I imagine IT sales is no different.

Not an IT manager but we get a few a week. Yeah sure I'll give you the phone number of who's in charge, the CEO of this large global corporation so you can try selling him stationery. Good luck!

Indeed I do and it does get annoying.
I do tend to pass a lot of them on to my minions - let them deal with them.
I also refuse point blank to deal with "Unknown" or "Witheld" numbers.
You want to sell to me - then show me a phone number where I can call and speak to you.

stoofa

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

I work as a network security consultant for an IT reseller and can sympathise with any IT managers here but at the same time we have a lot of sales people who are genuinely intelligent people who get on very well with their customers and in pretty much every case that would have started from a phone call (albeit many years ago).

In a perfect world there would be no need for these calls but that would also require IT managers to be more proactive when they aren't getting good service and to go out seeking better options. Sadly, for every clued up IT manager there is one who shouldn't even be allowed an etch-a-sketch and sticks with useless suppliers who offer duff advice which they follow blindly (I often have to go in and review the results of this).

All that said, if you want to get rid of them then just say you outsource everything on a 5 year contract. That'll get put in their CRM system and you won't be pestered for a while.

I'm not a manager but I get loads, although unless they're a trusted supplier, they only get the main switchboard number rather then the office DDI, so I just ask reception to take a message.

I see how it may look it's more of a case of "Our technology is the best because..." in the hope that when it does come to it (which it will) they will choose them over other vendors.

There is a lot of interest from the financial and local govt. industries in respect of compliance etc. so it shouldn't be too easy to fill it up!

I just tell them I don't know anything. Last guy who called asked if he could call my line manager; I said I didn't know who that was.

I understand what you mean from a mobile phone etc.. point of view but when it comes to security solutions there are new threats and attacks out at least every week!

The difference between where I work and others that we are premium partners so therefore we are able to offer better margins than say other smaller "unknown number" outfits!

It's just interesting to see!

@ Magnolia - Commission is what we work for and providing excellent customer service means that when that license comes up for renewal where are your existing customers going to go!

@ Stoofa - The Unknown number ones would make me slightly nervous about who I tell what!!!

Not an IT manager as such, but yes... I know they're doing their jobs but they don't have to interrupt me when I'm trying to do mine.

Do you want a new server - No
Do you want new mobile phones for the company - No
Do you want new company cars - No
Are you happy with your leased line service - Yes
Have you considered.... - No

I wish they'd all just **** off and die

You don't even need to be a manager, just the chap unfortunate enough to pick the phone up. Telling them all your buying is centralised is the best way to get rid.

Can i just make one tiny point here. I work for a BT partner company - as a BT partner we act on BT's behalf and basically offer BT customers a free evaluation of their current calling plan based against all the other plans that BT offer in order to make sure its the best one for them. BT outsource loads of this work to its few partner firms as its not cost effective for them to do it themselves. Its a completely free process and is often very very valuable to the customer. Only last week i managed to cut a customers phone bill in half simply by changing his current calling package to a different one that BT was offering. The problem is that lots of people think you are trying to sell them something - when you are not at all. Fortunately there are a few people out there who realise this and dont act like moronic idiots and just tell you to get lost. Although i do sympathise with those who receive a lot of sales calls - its tough to tell the difference somethimes.

If anyone wants a review by the way then let me know!

fastwunz

I get about 5 calls a day at the moment. Funnily enough nearly all the companies are "HP/Dell/Microsoft preferred partners" and nearly all are the largest IT suppliers in the UK

Didn't intend to imply that you were, bud. Some of the other posters have implied that they view telesales people as annoying scum, and my comment about it just being a job was aimed towards them.

Completely agree with you about people doing their research first though. A lot of the calls are generated from a database though, so all the bod on the other end of the phone has got is a company name and a script to work to.

Archangelus

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

I use the "I'm sorry, it's against company policy" line and it works quite well.

Alternatively, if people call up and ask for the IT Manager (who is only in once a week, if that) I'll say "sorry, he's not here today, he'll be here on Wednesday" and they won't call back until the following Tuesday or something!

I'm sure our IT support guys get sales calls trying to flog all sorts to them and its a completely pointless waste of time as there are fairly strong links between the directors and the one company we do get all our equipment from to the point that even if the IT guys did have a choice the sales bod wouldn't have a hope in hells chance of bettering what we already get.

The only ones I tend to get are people offering me Oracle DBAs (not that I'm a manager or have ever hired anyone in my life tbh...) - unfortunately a guy on the team next to mine needed to get some contractors in a while back and now the recruitment guys keep trying different phone numbers in an attempt to supply us with people. It is quite amusing when they're fishing for info - hiring managers names etc... normally wind them up a bit then transfer the call to the receptionist or HR dept (or occasionally any random number in the office if I'm really bored).

All our hardware is handled by RM (Research Machines, shudder), tell em that and they buzz off usually as they just can't do better (even more shudder). Ususally get fowarded calls from my boss from printer ink/toner salespeople though, that is annoying as i don't care how much we spend on it a month, so i don't care about the savings/better deals, i'm not the bloody accountant

Justintime

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

Yup.... I get them.
I put them on our special hold line.

It plays Mickey Mouse and friends sing the christmas hits non stop. We see how long they hang on for. Record is currently just over 9 minutes.

I've seen it from both sides of the fence. C&W did some research a few years back around the nature of cold calls per day to a corporate IT Manager/Director. If I recall correctly it was an average of 11 per day of which 9 were from telecoms providers of some form or another. A thankless task.

I'm a manager and i've got probably two of these phonecalls and after about 10 seconds stopped them and said "are you selling me something?" unless they give me a straight answer its *click* goodnight.

Easy enough to answer that one with a question of course, "morning or afternoon?". I did that once 20 years or so ago and it got me a meeting the next day for nothing more than making the IT Manager laugh. I sold him a small Pegasus Junior Accounting system and a £10K PC and Brother 4018 Dot Matrix printer (those were the days!) within a few days of meeting with him.

My days of cold calling are many many years back thank god, a thankless yet important job for any junior sales person if for no other reason than it allows them to learn the types of objections they are likely to face and to refine how they handle that, but it is a battery chicken of a job. The really good people will of course make progress but really good sales people at that age are few and far between and don't stay on the end of a telephone cold calling very long if they are good. It is a scatter gun approach but you might have a few catches and it is a Forth Bridge process of course. The good sales people will get meetings because they will do the job well, the vast majority are rubbish and they wont.

As you develop in your career you soon realise when big money and business change is involved the IT Managers are not the people you should be talking with anyway as they will be instructed to rubber stamp other peoples strategic decisions from a technical standpoint. Having spent over 20 years selling, running sales teams and running IT companies I speak from experience and I promise you, IT Managers are not someone typically targeted when the decisions get serious, it's C Club, Directors and senior Operations people, and there are much simpler and appropriate ways to get their ear. Sure, if your selling boxes with lights then the IT Manager will be useful, but if you are selling 7 or 8 figure Infrastructure or Software solutions on which companies run their business the IT Managers will rarely make that call.

Without customers you have no business and without someone convincing those customers that your product, service or solution is the best they will go elsewhere. Tis nothing more than a food chain and cold calling is very much the krill of the selling game

housemaster

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

I'm on the helpdesk, so I palm all sales calls off on the Head of IT.

Mostly because he's a turd in a suit.

Mr.Clark

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

We get a company to do these calls for us, so I chase up the leads which is OK as you only deal with people interesting in what you are selling

Duke

How many people are I.T Managers here and get annoying sales calls

Iím not an IT manager but I take a lot of these calls. I often actually prefer to take them, as the actual IT manager will spend half an hour carefully explaining about how he has a limited budget etc.

The most persistent annoying ones that keep ringing at the moment are Hackersafe and Computing Magazine. The Hackersafe person I spoke to was genuinely astounded that I didnít see the value of putting their logos on our websites, as if every single person he calls signs up for it!
