E521 Vista DVD drive not recognizing media

My dvd burner drive (a tsst 653A) isn't recognizing any media put into it-I have a E521 with Vista. I uninstalled roxio-which is a whole other issue altogether -because it wouldn't burn dvd's & then decided it didn't recognize any media in the drive- & was going to reinstall it. Ok after lurking & trying many things suggested-deleting upper & lower filters-uninstalling drive reinstalling it. error 39 & a custom diagnostic
error code 4EOF:137B (I DID have data media in the drive). I'm stuck
Oh I did do another diagnostics
Sata 1 Pass
Sata 2 Diagnostics not supported
Sata 3 No IDE device
Sata 4 No IDE device
As a side note-when I tried to restore factory defaults-it gave me a floppy disk A: drive, I only have one dvd drive
Help??
Oh this is all original equipment.

Hi, Lou:

Got your PM. The drive listed in my signature is IDE, but you need an SATA drive. Take a look at Newegg. They have a bunch of models and also user ratings.

Nevermind. I just ran the Nero InfoTool and it tells me that this version only reads dvd and does not write.

I am hoping this thread is not too old to post to. I have the same issue only I am running XP and I did not see a firmware update for my version which is TS-H493A D200. I read on another thread that Dell did not install the Cineplayer on many machines nor did they send the disc to do it yourself. Cineplayer shows in my programs under add/remove programs but on the right where it usually tells you the size of the program it is blank. I am assuming this means it is not installed. I did try to reinstall it from there and it asks me to insert the disc, which of course, I don't have. Any ideas? Thanks

I read you post again slowly and now I think I am clear. I thought you still
had the Error Code 39. Since the drive is back and you have run the Dell
Diagnostics, the error code 4EOF:137B usually indicates the drive has failed.

If you have not already tried a Firmware update, Dell has one here ............

After the update, try the Diagnostics on the drive again.

Sorry, that was one of the first things I'd tried-(it originally saved itself to C:dell/drivers. I would check my drivers to see if it showed-it never has-so I looked where the other drivers for DVD were (windows/system32/driver)-I saved it to there-there is no change-BUT I did do it AGAIN-& got the same error (4EOF:137B)

Your drive has failed. You need to consider replacing it.

Is this under warrantee-I bought it in June/July?
ssaustin

E521 Vista DVD drive not recognizing media

Yes, the warranty is for one year. Call Dell and tell them you have
run the Diagnostics and you have gotten error code 4EOF:137B. Request
a replacement drive. They may have you do a few other things to check
the system out, but they will replace the drive.
