DVD CD Wont Recognize DVDs

I have a Dell XPS 710 with a combination DVD-CD player (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H31N). In the past I have played DVDs and written data to them. This was a couple of months ago. I have since updated the Win XP software from my automatic updates.Yesterday Iwent to try to record a data DVD and the system does not respond - it keeps asking for a disk. I have tried several but it will not start a either a previously recorded disk, play a movie disk, or a brand new disk. The system will still play CDs- music, program ,and data. It is just the DVDs that aren't functioning. Any suggestions? I have run through the system help files but got nowhere. Since it has been a few months I am not sure if a system restore will work as I am not sure at what point it stopped responding to DVDs.

Two questions come to mind:

If I uninstall the drives in Device Manager will the operating system restore them on reboot?

I noticed some new drivers on the Dell CD/DVD site but didn't see my model posted. Will some other set work?

thanks for any help.

Hi, Schmidt:

Please work through these standard troubleshooting steps, which will refresh your device drivers. Also run the diagnostics on the drive.

Okay - I did most of those steps without any luck. The computer knows the drive is there as I can read and write to CDs and play music. I have reloaded my Roxio Creater software that allows me to burn CDs and DVDs but the drive still won't recognize DVDs. Is it possible the drive is broken as far as DVDs go? I'm not sure if there are separate "heads" for CDs and DVDs? I've even done a system restore to before I added Win XP SP3 without any help.

The CD laser is different from the DVD laser. It's possible for one of them to go bad, but the way you tell is to run the diagnostics with a data DVD in the drive.

osprey4 - I downloaded and loaded Nero5 information tool. I then ran the program several times. First I ran it with a data DVD that I recorded on this very same system. It indicated green checks for all the types of CDs and DVDs it is supposed to read and write to but indicated that no disk was in the drive. I then tried a DVD software disk (Silent Hunter 4) with I had previously loaded - again no disk in drive. I tried a movie DVD - same outcome. Finally I loaded a data CD RW and it indicated the disk and the amount of data, etc.

Do you have any clue with this additional data input?

Thanks for you help so far.

Here is another data point. when I run the hardware diagnostics with a CD in the system I get a good readout but when I run with a data DVD in, the diagnostics program hangs up when it is trying to check the DVD drive portion.

Time for a new drive, it would appear. Try Newegg if you are no longer under warranty (link in my signature).

Yea - I think I came to that realization a few days ago but thought I would get some outside help just the same. Thanks for the tip on where to go to look for a new drive - I appreciate all your help.
