Question 2300 Adapter at baseport F6C0h is not responding ( DELL PowerEdge HD SCSI RAID )
Updated: 2008-10-13 18:10:12 (8)
2300 Adapter at baseport F6C0h is not responding

---service tag HFNGB---

I tried this post in the SCSI section, but maybe it should be here instead.

After a routine shutdown/restart of my server, I received the following error when trying to reboot:

ADAPTER AT BASEPORT F6C0H IS NOT RESPONDING
NO ADAPTER
ADAPTER AIC-7890 SCSI BIOS v2.01 DELL 001
PRESS CTRL A FOR SCSI SELECT UTILITY...
...NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE
STRIKE F1 TO RETRY BOOT, F2 FOR SETUP UTILITY

Configuration is RAID 5 - 3 HDDs

Any ideas for me? I've restored the necessary files for users on another server from backup, but I need this server back up and running (it's my PDC!).

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for your reply.

One last question. When you say rebuild, do you mean reformatting the drives ?
Also, the message adapter not responding - could it because a piece of hardware (adapter card?) has dislodged or something like that - this system was moved from a different location and used to work fine before the move.

Thanks,
Sridhar

Hi Sridhar,

"Rebuild" is a term used to repair the raid array once you replace a defective hard drive.

Rebuild is a non-destructive procedure.
It is not the same as "reformat", which does destroy data on the drive.

It is very possible after moving a computer, for a piece of hardware to lose its connection. Try removing, visually inspecting, and reseating every component on the inside and outside of the server.

What about my inability to access the PERC BIOS via ? If a HDD failed, shouldn't I still be able to gain access to the PERC BIOS.
What steps can I take to pinpoint the problem? And to disable the RAID alarm...

Hi,

Yes, a bad drive could still cause the inability to get into the BIOS.

Troubleshooting Steps

Remove all the hard drives. Try to boot just to CTRL-M. If you can now get into the Perc Bios, you can replace the drives one at a time until you find the culprit.

If not, reseat the Perc in its PCI slot and reseat the cables at both ends. If still nogo, the Perc has most likely failed. You could try reseating the memory on the Perc or try another PCI slot to confirm.

Once you get into the Perc BIOS, you can silence the alarm.

Hi,

I cant say you have definately lost all your data, but it does not look good.

I would work on the assumption that one of the hard drives has caused the others to drop offline. If you can locate and replace this drive, the logical drives MAY be able to be rebuilt.

2300 Adapter at baseport F6C0h is not responding

Hi, I ran into the same issue today and i dont seem to understand what the problem might be. I was able to disable the alarm setting as per the recommendation.

Some details of the system are as follows:
PowerEdge 2300/400
RAID II Adapter Bios Version 1.47
Adaptec SCSI BIOS
Powervault 200S

The error message i get is this:
Adapter at baseport F6C0h is not responding

Following SCSI IDs are not responding
Channel 0 - 8,9,10
Channel 1 - 0,1,2,3

3 logical drives found on the Host Adapter
2 logical drives failed
3 logical drives handled by BIOS.

I have no clue what could have caused this issue. Does this mean that i have lost all the data ? Any pointers/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sridhar

Hey there,

Could it be that the adaptor at address HFNGB is your Raid card? So, the card failed for some reason, rendering the drives and any array on it inoperative.

Then, the bios tried to boot from the onboard SCSI adaptor, that being the AIC-7890. Since the drives are connected to the raid and there being nothing on the on-board SCSI controler, no other boot media was found.

If this seems to be the issue, why not boot into the Dell diagnostics and run all tests relating to the PCI bus and the raid controller. Maybe removing and reseating the card may help?

Hope this lends a helping hand.

Hi,

The "Baseport .... is not responding" is often a bad hard drive creating noise on the Scsi bus and not allowing the Perc to finish the scan.
