Question Ion users ( Ubuntu Forums Desktop Environments )

Ion users

Do other Ion2 and 3 users exist?

Right now I'm working on changing the menu key because F12 is tied to right click on my ibook.

This reminds me of the Hans Reiser case - even if he's a murderer, there isn't any reason not to use ReiserFS. The same is true of Ion - I don't really care if Tuomo is a jerk or not, because Ion3 is good software.

Interesting... I've never heard if wmii before. I must try it out!

My usage mirrors nille. I use Ion3 when I want to be productive. Office 2003 (via CrossOver) integrates nicely with it. The ability to easily switch between workspaces, and being able to full-screen any program with alt+enter are invaluable. Ion3 can be finicky with some programs, but for the most part I'm impressed with how well things behave within it.

When I'm not being productive, I usually switch to whatever other window manager I'm playing with (Xfce at the moment, KDE next week, Fluxbox after that). But I always have ion3 installed on my box.

that sucks, just got into evilwm, loving the keyboard control, but was wanting to be able to split my screen up into a couple xterms and was looking into trying ion3, but i dont want to support that guy. You think as a developer you would want people looking into your stuff, making it better, and taking what you gave them and just making w 1f40 ork for them better or hell, look better etc. Its not like it takes away from ion. Unless i missed something, he just seemed mad they didnt change the name of their "ion-3" package since they made a patch available to use the non-bitmap fonts. I would be proud someone cared enough to add something to my program.

I have been using Ion3 quite a lot, but then again I found the attitude-issue, plus som minor changes in the behaviour that I couldn't fix myself (I don't know how to use Lua in a proper way ).

Today I'm using Xfce+Beryl+AWN (that's some change, huh? ) but when I really need to get things done I often change back to Ion. Perhaps I should learn how to use and configure WMII instead..?

Yeah, ion is great, but after the recent hassle about a patched version of ion3 packaged for ArchLinux and Tuomo being pissed about the "treatment of the FOSS herd (both of my code, and of the good old *nix)", as "the goal of the FOSS herd is to turn everything into homogeneous ****" (see http://archlinux.org/pipermail/tur-u...il/004644.html), I strongly resent using ion3.

Right now, I'm learning to use wmii and I like it: All programs, even the multi-windowed ones, work as they should and it doesn't seem to be maintained by a guy who is more some kind of egocentric sorehead trademark holder.

where are you?

I use Ion2. It has made my life much easier.

I'm actually using ion3, and only done some light editting of the rc files so to speak.

Here's an interesting question:

Is there anyone else (besides me) who likes the concept of ion and would use it regularly, but is annoyed that certain software - like GIMP, Mozilla, things designed with GNOME in mind, and so on - doesn't work properly within the ion environment... and are further put off by Tuomo's apparent "My program is fine, it's everything else that's broken" attitude when such incompatibilities are brought up? (And don't even mention things like "font smoothing" and "Xinerama" to him...)

I like ion and would use it regularly but for these issues, plus the attitude of its creator - which often comes off as being resentful that his window manager is used by so many people - sometimes leaves me cold. An alternative is wmii, which plays nicer with software that develops nervous tics in ion, plus it's a bit "frendlier" (in the usability sense) to those who're transitioning from a traditional WIMP environment.

Its great to see that there are other ION users out there. I just started using ION and I am hooked. It's the only window manager that I didn't feel compelled to customize alot.

I tried wmii but it seemed like I had to do alot of customization to get it to work.

How do you do that? I'm using ion3 like I would GridMove on Windows. If I could use ion3 within Gnome it'd be great.

I use Ion and found some terrific advice in this thread!

Hu? I didn't see that much advice, just bashing of the author ^^ (no offence)

Btw: how do I reload the configuration files in ion3 without restarting X/ion?

Answer: F12 + session/restart (open windows are kept)

I'm currently trying out ion3, and really liking it.

After reading this thread I read some of the author's blogposts, and I can't see that much wrong there. Maybe a little radical (in lack of a better word), but I must say I agree with him on many points.

Unless i missed something, he just seemed mad they didnt change the name of their "ion-3" package since they made a patch available to use the non-bitmap fonts.

The way I understand it, Tuomo's problem with the package naming is that he hates xft (in particular, its facility for font smoothing) with such a zealous passion that he absolutely does not want his name associated with anything that might be capable of supporting it. He actually doesn't care if such support is added once the code is out of his hands - though this is one of the reasons he's decided to abandon *nix and go closed-source once Ion3 goes stable - but he wants it made abundantly clear that adding such patches effectively "voids the warranty" and disqualifies the user of such add-ons from ever recieving Ion3 support from the author.

That xft is a standard in the *nix world, and that font smoothing can be turned off within it, matters not at all to him. Xft is still "crapware" in his eyes, and he refuses to support, or even have it implied that he might support, anything he deems "crapware." This list also includes, but is by no means limited to, Firefox, UTF-8 encoding, Xinerama, and anything at all having to do with GNOME/GTK. Which is fine, it's certainly his right as a software author, but he has such a "holy war" attitude about the whole thing that it gets very difficult to read anything he has to say - including the docs.
