Unable to login to X

I am not sure what is going on or how to fix it. I use Ubuntu as my router on my network, today I attempted to do some troubleshooting related to VNC. Upon my attempt to restart, there was no restart or shutdown options, so I logged out, knowing I could restart from there and hoping that it would repair the problem, after a successful restart, I am completely unable to login. I can type in my un and pw, the screen goes black, a flashing underscore appears briefly, and back to the login screen. I am completely lost as this is my first linux install, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Unable to login to X

I can't Help you. I was able to do login. But Changed the login windows in sistem preferences and now all I get is a black screen with the funny cursor icon... Have to login via the X server starting safe... whattashit. This is not a reliable way to do it.
