man command how to get back to terminal

When I use the "man" command in terminal, it works fine but how do I get out and back to the terminal command line? I try ctl-c, esc, and just letting it run to the end - but I have 1f40 never been able to get out. I have to close the term window and start another. I am (to say the least) new at Ubuntu. Thanks for any help...
