Is it possible to view the Beryl/Compiz effects for Ubuntu (or any distro for that matter) under VMWare? Does VMWare have that capability? If not, I suppose I can just try the LiveCD. Thanks.
The beta versions of vmware workstation have experimental 3D support available to them, but I highly doubt that compiz or beryl would work with these. Your best bet is to setup a dual boot if you want to see the fun eye candy.

Beryl Compiz in Vmware
Old post I know, but has there been any progress on this?
vmware's 3d is now quite good with windows host and guest machines, so I can't see any reason why linux couldn't take advantage of it as well. I guess it just takes someone to write a proper driver...

Im right there with ya. I used to have a dual boot with ubuntu but it was annoying, and i hate messing with partitions, and boot records. Now i would like to just use vmware but i havent had much luck finding a way to get 3d acceleration running good in vmware. There is an open source project called vmgl. But if you dont mind a dual boot and you dont want to mess with partitioning try out Wubi.

Alot of people have told me that it wouldnt work because there is no real hardware and no real drivers.
Ive looked for some information regarding this issue to, but havent found anything.
Seems liek we will have to wait.
