why is Gnome so slow
Why is Gnome slow
1f40
when compared to kde. Example in KdeI can have Firefox open with 15 tabs, Konsole, Konqueror, Kopete and other stuff running all at the same time and walk away and my screensaver kicks on and it runs smooth as silk. But in Gnome anything I use is slow. Even when no apps open and the screensaver comes on it even jerks. Browsing files, surfing the internet, its all slow, And this is on a fresh install of Ubuntu with Kde added.
I like Gnome and rather fell in love with it but I cant seem to understand why its slow. And when I mean slow I mean browsing files tends to take a few seconds. I may be exagertrating a little but anything I do in Gnome seems slower then Kde.
Is there anything I can do to speed it up. I read a little on prelinking but that seems to be only good for starting apps I believe.

Hey, I ask the same question about kde
Strange isn't it, that different people have different experiences with the same software?

why is Gnome so slow
do you have video drivers installed? if you are using a dx8 or higher card chances are you'll need to take steps to install the binary-only latest drivers from the card manufacturer.

why is Gnome so slow
I questioned the same thing a couple of times usergentoo. Nobody knows. I prefer Gnome to KDE or XFCE4, but on my ATI 9600 Pro (DRI) or my GF4 Ti 4200 128mb (DRI) I cant use Gnome.
Any ideas?

why is Gnome so slow
Gateway Solo 9550 1.1 PIII 512 mbs ram Geforce2 Go 32Mbs ram.Using the Nvidia drivers 7174. OpenGL works really well.
What really doesnt make since is that it runs faster on the livecd then my installation.
Oh and btw it took me two years to get opengl back working. I kind of nervous of trying to do any updates for the video drivers.

why is Gnome so slow
Heh my Gnome is pretty slow too, i have
Ubuntu Hoary installed with latest drivers from ATI (not the synaptic one same thing anyways it's slow)
AMD 64 3200+
1GB RAM
ASUS K8NE Motherboard
i mean it's not slow it just feels kinda not reactive compared to KDE which is blasing fast. When i hit "close session" for exemple, the fading is really slow and the mouse movment is really choppy... is gnome using CPU to render stuff instead of the graphic card ? if yes how can i force the use of the GPU ?
Thanks alot ! cheers

why is Gnome so slow
I have two pcs..
The newest one, an Intel Celeron 2GHZ with NVIDIA 6800 GT graphics card, gl enabled uses Kubuntu and KDE. Performance is never quite top-notch, it lags a bit when opening large apps, etc...firefox especially is extremely slow.
The old one, an Intel Pentium 2 333 Mhz uses Ubuntu... ATI graphics card from wayback, and no gl drivers. However, it is quite responsive..and not too slow either, considering its age. I mean, it lags a bit when opening applications, but it doesn't take as much time as with Kubuntu.. And firefox blazes along...
Both distros 5.04
I think...I don't know..

why is Gnome so slow
Although it might be simply subjective, I found that this improved the situation:
