I may be off on the time line but if your talking about the megadrive and snes type games. The reason alot of them were alot shorter was because you had to play them in one play through. As you were unable to save your progress.
Games today were you can save when ever you want as many times as you want. Need to be a certain length other wise they get to easy.
I myself much prefer games with limited saves and only in certain places.
Alot like the early RE games. I have no idea how they do it now.
I'm trying to play this way through Fallout 3, but even that auto saves all the time for you. Which turns the games hard points more into a ground hog style game were i just keep repeating untill i get it right.
Having waffled on, my point is......
oh yeah now adays with all the hand holding games give you, they need to be longer.
