Video games are like interactive story books to me. It is exciting to be able to be "someone else" because when it comes down to it, the character you play will most likely not have actions or behavior similar to oneself. Even more interesting is that you get to experience the conflicts that this individual (or more) go through, but of course it is not always a realistic type conflict - it is a conflict nonetheless.
I would not say that I have a hero amongst a video game character or anyone for that matter, but I do appreciate characters and people (video games or not) for the things they experience.
Games like the Metal Gear Solid series definetly has depth behind it showing you the persona of the many characters - both bad and good. The thing that is most interesting is why the "bad guys" are the way they are because when it comes down to it, they do not view themselves as "bad guys" - they think they are doing something that is right while others think differently.
Games like Devil May Cry, in my opinion, does not have the depth like the Metal Gear Solid series for obvious reasons, but still allows a player/audience to see character development - to see a different being and how they behave and the conflicts he or she goes through as if it were told in a story, but more importantly, the player/audience gets to
see this character through the eyes of the creator.
Dante is just one sick mother ****er and I enjoy being his catalyst even though I do not make the character for what he is - I get to experience what he goes through.
What I enjoy about video games is that they are interactive story books that has the potential to show other forms of art throughout. The places a player goes to and the people are all figments of someones imagination (obviously not all games are from imagination). Video games allow me, as a person, to go where some do not get to go and experience what some do not experience, but definetly should not be an ability to put on a pedestal - more like an addition to the many options to "escape".
I am really out of it at the moment; if what I typed does not make sense, I'll try to make sense of it later.
