Before Install parse error unexpected T_VARIABLE

OK guys, I've searched and searched and can't seem to find the answer to my problem. Thinking the problem might be a corrupt file, I've tried uploading the files 2 or 3 times from GoLive and SmartFTP to no avail. After uploading the files, when I goto install the BB, I get the following message:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/content/t/n/t/tntapit/html/forum/includes/functions.php on line 3734

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I'm using RC5

No you don't have to have robots.txt file and if you just want to suppress that error do like you said and upload a blank file. All that does is give instructions to search bots -- it has nothing to do with phpBB.

Can you post lines 3730-3740 of includes/functions.php?

OK, this looks like all that is contained in the error log:

[Wed Sep 19 20:44:05 2007] [error] [client 140.123.101.145] File does not exist: /var/chroot/home/content/t/n/t/tntapit/html/robots.txt

Do I need a robots.txt file on my server even the text file would be blank?

Okay can you check the server's error log? If you don't know where to find it, ask your host. Once you know where it is, then try installing again so the error will be at the very bottom (probably anywhere from 1-15 lines from the last) and post it here.

You may have a corrupt file from here so be sure to re-download phpBB again and upload the file again. Post back if that doesn't work.

Yes, I have downloaded phpBB 3 times, deleted all the "old" files off the server and re-uploaded the "new" files. It still won't work.
