Question Infestor Infest Ability ( BlizzForums StarCraft 2 Discussion )
Updated: 2009-06-04 05:15:10 (14)
Infestor Infest Ability

First there was the ability to infest buildings. Now there is the ability to spawn Infested Terran.

Other than the fact that both of these abilities are underwhelming something seems to be "missing" from the whole "infestation" idea. Due to this I'd like to ask people for their ideas for the "infest" ability.

I'd also like to ask for some feedback on this generic idea:

Infestation and assimilation are two completely different things when it comes to the Zerg. Infestation is at its core closest to a type of "Mind control" ability, except it effects the organisms entire body, not simply the brain. As such this ability should not only be a simple "Mind Control" ability, but also a little bit more, a little bit different. What I'm proposing is a "Mind Control" ability which alters the targeted unit in some way to reflect the "infestation" concept. What type(s) of alteration(s) that may be, I'm not quite sure.

---
PS:
(Following execution completely optional, core idea is previous paragraph)
I'm also visualizing this new "infest" ability as a low-energy melee-range ability in which the Infestor (new model) does something like ingests or cocoons the targeted unit. This would take "X" amount of seconds and if the Infestor is killed before then the spell is canceled.

Infestor Infest Ability

Infest: Small AoE spell that releases spores which infest (mind controls) all ground units caught in their cloud for 15 seconds. Said units die after effect wears off. Requires micro and strategy (do you Infest the 5 enemy Marines, or his Siege Tank?) Can be cast on enemy structures to disable them.

Do the units retain all of their standard statistics and abilities?
This would be a very high energy ability as it is a guaranteed group kill ability?

Yes.

The sole exception is builders can't build or mine.

I prefer infest not to be mind control :/

It HAS to be either a form of mind control, disable, or damage dealing ability.

My idea is all three, and scales with skill.

No infesting mechanical units plox. It makes this move a one hit KO against a carrier, which isn't cool.

So permanent Mind Control over a Carrier was ok on SC1, but my temporary GROUND ONLY Mind Control for SC2 isn't?

depends actually

how long does it take to infest
aoe
what exactly becomes of the infested unit ...
balance shit like that ...

I still don't like the idea ... I mean Toss have (had?) mind control why bring that ability and give it to zerg with the excuse of that being mind control

and let me remind you that we already have soemthing like that if not exactly the same with corruptors so I really see no point in this

im pretty sure he said small aoe on ground units only. it sounds good to me. statistical stuff like how much damage the infested unit does and how long it lasts and how much aoe and how energy it requires and other stuff like that can be balanced. its the idea that we are looking at here

Still don't like it. I'm not a fan of stuff like that in general.

Such hypocrisy round dees parts. Here's unwavering support for the return of Fungal Infestation, an ability which killed a unit in 5 seconds and caused it to explode in AoE, and yet my suggestion is just a slightly modified version of that and gets no support.

You people really don't know what you want.

My suggestion to remplace mind control can be one of these two:

Liquid infestation: 50 energy, objetive: structures as we seen in the first video, takes 5 seconds to finish drop the liquid. Leaving to that structure without operation for 60 sec and from that structure come out 5 broodlings.

Or...

Fabric Slug: 75 Energy, objetive and graphics as the old Esnare (needs upgrade from infestor pit).
Decreases to half the range and sight of the units affected making them a 20% more vulnerable to damage.

It should be as it was in the original, just this time infesting protoss also.

the fact that it infested only marines and zealots seemed good enough, because tanks are controlled by marines anyways and the protosss all have the looks of the zealots
