House of Leaves

So I got this book from the library and I'm about ~100 pages in...how much fucking stranger does it get? Because all the footnotes are starting to annoy the shit out of me.

House of Leaves

One of the greatest books ever. It gets increasingly strange culminating in a huge mindfuck at the end. Typographically the book gets more bizarre as the characters descend further into the labyrinth of the manuscript/film/house.

I'm about seven pages into the weird box mirror image thingy with the sidenotes on both sides of the page listing random bullshit. Makes me want to cry.

I waded my through the House of Leaves
and found myself awash in phantasmagoric
realms. I cannot forget that I built the
shadows here. They are annotated by the
claws of the Minotaur. Spiraling, wretched
scrawls of lithium winding through the

windows

and out again. Where for art I do not know why;
whether it is composed of Xylitol, to enhance
remineralization and Humectants, or pasty

legends.

I found out last night that reading House of Leaves while listening to NIN's The Fragile at 12:30 in the morning is a baaaaaaaaaaaad idea.

Fuck NIN.

Didn't Circa Survive make a song to House of Leaves?

I actually cannot read this book, I get lightheaded every time. Weird.

Well, seeing this thread was bumped...

finished it last week (spoilers ahead). The typography was original (or if that style has been done before, I've never seen it) and creative, but most of the time it got in the way of actually telling the story. And the story, also original (both in plot and execution) was ultimately unfullfilling. The mystery of the house was never solved, it was just abandoned. I was left with the overwhelming impression that Johnny Truant made the whole thing up, either for the lulz or because he was going insane.

I wouldn't say it was horrible, but if the plot took more time to resolve itself at the end, rather than just being wrapped up way too quick, then it would have been a far better book. That said, it was genuinely creepy until the last long stretch of Johnny Truant's exposition, where he was going steadily insane. And then him running into the band that had a copy of the book he was writing...that's where I went "this is bullshit!" and almost threw the book aside.

Yeah, it's the hidden track at the end of Meet Me In Montauk.

The resolution to the plot is hidden somewhere inside the book. MZD has stated that there is a "grand staircase" that spirals through the novel which explains the relationship between Zampano, Pelanfina, Johnny Truant, and the editors. So far no one has found it.

Resolution? As in, an explanation to the happenings in the House (of Usher)? What connects the characters?...

Visions of Khas

House of Leaves

Resolution as in explanation of the true nature and meaning behind the stories in the book. Which ones are real, who really wrote the book, which characters actually exist, etc.

discussion on the "grand staircase": http://www.houseofleaves.com/forum/a...php/t-757.html

Quote:
My thoughts are that the Grand Staircase MZD referred to is a alternative term for the core of the House, it's essence and it's meaning.

The Grand Staircase, in the novel, is I think, a reference to Jacob's Dream in Genesis, where he sees angels descending and ascending a staircase (Jacob's ladder). Jacob names the place Bethel, or House of God.

Looks to me like this book was written by a profound dipshit

Oh, by no means was the author a dipshit. I just think that the book relies more on tricking the reader and making it difficult to read rather than working out a great story.

I said spoiler in the post where I discussed the books ending, did you want me to write it in six foot blinking neon letters?
