So lately my laptop had been acting funky. Whenever I watch a video like hulu for example, after a certain amount of time (different every time, and sometimes it doesn't happen), my computer will just shut off. I suspect it's a temperature thing, it gets too hot and kills itself to protect.
So I downloaded speedfan. The HD temp sensor seems to work, it usually runs normal temps but sometimes 3-4 degrees hot. But the seven or eight other sensors don't seem to be working. I dont know if they are fried or what, but they're all stuck at 102 C. . Never changes, ever
Any ideas on why? Or suggestions on how to fix my computer, or keep it from running so hot? I already close any non-essential programs and processes.

Check out the power supply section, also check if any of your programs are running with abnormal memory and CPU consumption

which one is the power supply section? none of my programs run with abnormal memory/cpu. sometimes FF spins out of control with CPU usage especially if I have three or more tabs open with flash stuff on them, but I always kill it before it causes problems.

depends on the model

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
use that first
if the CPU is too hot check it's fan

if there is dust or something like that - clean it
If everything is ok with the fan chamber - check the thermal grease
Also I suspect it may not be the temperature sensor but rather some inherent hardware problems like CPU or motherboard going bad
as you might not know, this is how your laptop looks part after part

Hey guys.
About the same kind of topic...
I just got the Thermaltake Duorb VGA fan for my 8800 GTS 320MB DDR3 nVidia card. Before buying it, I had applied Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal compound on my stock fan and it had cooled the card from 52C idle to 48C idle (No OC'g)
When I changed the fan and applied OCZ Freeze thermal cpd, the card now runs at 50C (no OC). What am I doing wrong????
On the internet its says that it should have dropped to at least 38C from 47C (stock fan). I can't understand this...
Help please, anyone?

Pizza Speedfan is odd at times. While it reads every sensor, it doesn't seem to read all of them correctly. For instance I've got one temp that's always like -38C (lol?) but the other sensors work correctly. If the computer is overheating you might try looking near the exhaust fan's vent and see if it's loaded with dust and such -- if it is you might buy some compressed air (air -- not cleaner stuff) and blast that dust out of there.
Notebooks are iffy to figure out, but if it's overheating... Though it's not like flash is an efficient player... Have you seen Hulu's desktop version yet? Dear god that thing is insane.
By the way you might try window's event viewer and check the logs to see if there's any mention or reason for the crash.

This morning I downloaded the second program spychi said to try, and that one seems to be reading my temp sensors correctly...although it gives no indication of what normal levels are supposed to be so...does anyone know?
Also I have no idea how he found photos of my exact laptop model (lol) but next time I have some time I will definitely open it up and clean it out a bit.

Thermal glue or grease - you might be using a very cheap bad or you might have placed it in the wrong way
also use rivia tuner and increase the fan speed
@Pizza
happy to hear that those sensors are working again, that means that there is no problem with the hardware inside
clean the exhaust of that cpu fan and other dirty places

Thx Spychi
For applying the grease, I applied the thickness of a page-worth on the GPU surface and smoothed it with a part of rectangular hard plastic that encased the OCZ grease. I made a sort-of flat surface using that (I tried to smoothen as best as I could). Do I need something flatter?
I do use nTune to increase my fan speed, but it doesn't change the above..
I read reviews about both thermal compounds and they seem to be decent/high conducting, able to help cool effectively.
Another thing I want to do next is post a picture of my Case to show you how the card sits wrt other components...
The duorb is connected to the PSU directly, and is thus running at max fan speed.
I ran CPUID and it reports the following:

Do you have a fan that blows air on the GPU from the case's exterior? It depends
My 4870 is getting 8 degrees C hoter while in idle without the fan blowing on it and 16 degrees hoter without the fan blowing while in load
you need to have the optimal airfloow to achieve much much better cooling, otherwise you might have such high temps

I have 2 Thermaltake 120mm case fans (1 in front and 1 in back), and I tried as much as possible to pack the cables from the PSU as tightly as possible to allow for better airflow.
The pic shows how it currently looks like...
What is lacking in this setup, in your opinion??

Speedfan
Well there is not much space between the GPU and the bottom of the case and there is no fan blowing the air on the GPU, this is the main reason why you have such temps
I have it this way
Damn I need to clean up the heatsink... and change the thermal grease cause it's been like 9 months when I last changed it

Thank you buddy
I know now I have to ditch my crappy casing for a new one... somehow. That will be a project for the future though, since I'm on a tight budget. I'll prolly try upping the casing in 2-3 months from now. Larger casing means better air flow (when considering those 2 120mm fans), and more space for the hot air to dissipate from the GPU and what the Duorb cooler is spitting out.
Btw, I got myself a better CPU cooler than the stock one today Got meself an Alpine 7 CPU cooler
