Question Windows 7 ( BlizzForums Computer Discussion )

Windows 7

Is majorly badass.

That is all.

I can't wait for the final release.

P.S. It runs very fast on full settings on my old Dell Pentium M 2.0Ghz 2.0GB RAM. Vista would've crippled this old thing. I can't find many of the drivers though. I had to kinda rig the video drivers into working and a few other things.

Windows 7

I've got it as a dualboot with my XP machine right now, but I'm having trouble getting file sharing to work correctly (I've got a sort of "storage drive" where I store movies and stuff that's shared over the network).

I've not taken a look, but I need to figure out why other computers on my home LAN can't see the contents, I'm hoping it's just a matter of the workgroup name or something.

By the way, Windows 7 is very surprising. It runs so fast that I'm trying to decide how to move over to it completely and test it out, but I'm running into problems with iTunes. Though I believe I should be able to just copy over the iTunes folder over to it's equivelant in W7.

I've got this goal to switch over to Windows 7 to give me a chance to fully backup my computer and to repartition it (for some odd reason I split the bigger drive up and now I want it back to full so I don't have to worry about drive space). Even gave W7 it's own hard drive.

I might actually reboot into it in a moment, hehe.

I do wish I could fully turn cleartype off though, I already had to adjust some registry settings to get it truly off. I don't have an LCD so the blurry font shit is just annoying.

I'll say this though: From the time to install to reboot after first use (where Automatic Updates found drivers for everything) was about, oh, two hours or so. That's fucking amazing to be honest. W7 is what Vista should've been. I also love the taskbar and other eyecandy effects. >.<;;;;

ehehe.

Windows 7 is just Vista 2.0, so yeah. Take a little time and make it right I guess would be the key. It's MS though, so they'd rather just put it out and fix it later. You can do that when you're the boss.

I've really been wanting to give 7 a chance, but with me moving next week, and all the things I'm supposed to be doing, I won't have a chance for a while.

Just to repeat what I heard someone else say earlier -- might've been on Windows Weekly with Paul Tharot (sic?) -- "Windows 7 is what Vista should have been"

It's true. This system just feels like an upgrade to XP. Honestly. It's fast, snappy, and it's, for lack of a better term, smart. When something freezes up or crashes, it catches on faster then I do, and often times closes it down without any muss.

I've had a few issues with desktop gadgets, but really I don't need them minus the weather one. I've been filling out my programs, installing stuff I need or stuff I'm moving over from XP... I don't know, it's like, W7 is actually fun.

Installing took, basically, an hour, maybe two. It went fast, and for my computer that's surprising. I mean this is from DVD in the drive to reboot after the first load to get the mobo/graphics drivers installed.

Also love the taskbar. It's so cool.

But...but....Vista was so awesome! What will I do without crashing IE and freezing email clients and blue screens of death.....etc, etc, etc. I am now accustomed to being so disappointed. I don't think I can switch back to something stable, I might loose control.

Eh, I haven't really had any problems with vista. Then again I only started using it in late February. I'll see about installing Windows 7 on a partition tomorrow.

What Vista told me today:
For your computer's security, this file has been downloaded to your temporary internet folder.

What really happened:
But we're not actually putting it there, we're just going to tell you that is what we're doing, when in all reality we're just going through the motions to pretend that we're offering a secure computing environment, all the while making it exceedingly difficult to do anything productive. In the end, you can't download this file because we don't like the way it's stares at us. Sorry.

out of curiosity do you run Vista 32bit or the 64bit version? I get the feeling that the 32bit version is the one that's funky. and what the hell is a temporary internet folder? and/or wtf were you doing? hehe. Might be a chance to disable UAC and switch to using Opera.

Also starting to get the hate for UAC. 7 asks me everytime I boot the computer up if it's ok to run this side program I use to remap my 4th and 5th mouse keys.

32 bit

I was trying to print a PDF from a web page. It insisted on saving the PDF to my temp folder, but it never saved. I looked it up online and found this to be yet another in a series of VISTA $*(%#$

I'm past the point of fixing things, I just find ways to work around them. I ended up printing to efax and converting it from there.

I find W7 to be awesome, I also can't wait for the final product!
As far as I remember it gives from 20 to 30% more burst than XP on the same RIG without the optimal drivers.

did you have Adobe Reader installed, or something lightweight like Foxit?

I can see where people might be annoyed. I've been running into odd issues here and there because Program Files aren't writeable unless you run the program as an administrator or something. Like I couldn't patch War3 until I restarted it as an admin.

Good for security, batshit annoying for convenience though.

Yeah, I have 64 bit Vista, no major problems here.

I've been running Vista for 4 - 5 months, and I don't think it's crashed once due to a 'Vista' issue. It crashed a bunch initially due to 'NVIDIA doesn't know how to make a driver' issues, but not Vista that I can recall.

If you're experiencing a bunch of crashing, you've either got something fucked up, or the highly likely driver problems.

32bit is a joke, I'm not sure why they sell it.

For the record, I use PDF writers to send things all over the place on my desktop, in my docs etc. Cute and Primo both.

The PDF issue is clearly an inherent Vista issue though. There are numerous accounts of this problem to be found online.

As for the crashing....all I can tell you is that I had the exact same setup in XP and had no problems. So if the same setup fails under Vista, can we really blame drivers and 3rd party apps? Sounds to me like Vista failed to allow for backwards compatibility.

Lackey

I'm sure there's some issue there. All I'm saying is that it can work. I'm sure it has to do with the security setup, as mine is definitely not fort knox. I fully count on my ability spot issues combined with my security software over Windows stopping me from running downloads and shit.

There's really a couple thoughts here.

First, and this is more of a side rant. I hate it when people tell me "it worked before", and that's supposed to be an indication that it should be easily fixed or something. You may have had a house of cards the whole time, and it only took one change to bring them down. This isn't really directed at you, but the users I had to deal with on a daily basis working help desk.

You say you have the same setup, but you have to realize that drivers aren't Microsoft's responability. It is up to the individual product manufacturers to make sure their equipment works. It's not possible for Microsoft to do that.

Vista had a significantly different core than XP, this was to address a number of the major complaints about security. When you make those kind of changes, you're going to break things. If you build in backwards compatibility, you're likely building in the ability to exploit the same flaws as before.

As I said, I run Vista every day without crashes. I do all kinds of weird things to it, and I only reboot after I install software that requires it. I know a number of people in the same boat. So it's difficult for me to take one instance of severe system issues, and not expect it to be simply an issue with that setup.

For what it's worth, and since this is a Windows 7 thread, Vista and it share a kernel, so you won't have the same level of problems.

Redcloak

Nuts, try Foxit, WAY better than Acrobat for reading PDFs.

Jay Tee

Windows 7

He's right, Foxit is much quicker and not one of the most exploitable apps ever created.
