Potential Videocard upgrade

I'm using Roxio Videowave to create a slideshow/video production.

I've posed my issue on the Roxio forums here:

http://forums.support.roxio.com/inde...5&#entry274215

I've posed the current issue in my third post of the thread.

If I need to update my videocard, which card is suggested? I haven't researched video cards since I built my machine. The 8000 series cards were brand new when I built my computer in November '07 and since I got a good deal on a high end 7000 series card, I decided to go with the 7950, never thinking I would need more video power in the near future. I guess the near future is long past.............

I've checked the card and it i s firmly seated in the slot. The videocard power cable is also firmly attached.

I guess I like NVidia better than the other guy....

I know in the past, Evg cards have been highly recommended around here. Is that still the case? I'm looking for a moderately priced card. I doubt that I'd be able to afford a 200 series NVidia, unless there's a budget card that will do the trick. Another thing I learned is that the newer cards use a lot more power. Once again, I thought the 520 watt power supply would do me for a while... I guess I should have got the 620 power supply.

An issue I just thought of is the fact that I have a lot of stuff hooked up to my computer that are potentially using power resources. I have two external drives, via usb, but they each have their own power supply. I also have a printer, a powered usb hub, and a bluetooth dongle attached. Those items, combined with the mouse and keyboard, fill up all six rear usb ports, plus one usb port on top. I have two internal hard drives, with one more installed, but not hooked up to the data or power cables yet.

Because of my project deadline, I don't have time to order online. If I upgrade, I need to do it today or tomorrow, which means I need to find a retail outlet. I now live in a small town, so, without driving an hour, I need to probably go to either Best Buy or Fry's.

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

First, there are a few faulty assumptions. What you're working with is 2D, not 3D. Extra GPU horsepower won't change much of anything for 2D graphics.

Second, for 2D graphics, DX versions don't matter much, expecially DX9 vs DX10.

Bottom line, if this is the only reason for the upgrade, you'll just be throwing money away unless there is a physically hardware problem with the card.

So, there's three things
1) Have you updated the video card drivers?
2) Have you run windows updates?
3) Have you updated Roxio?

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if I needed to upgrade or not, but I thought upgrading might not be necessary if I wasn't a gamer, and thus not much 3D stuff, but I wasn't sure.

In answer to your suggestions............

I have Windows update automatically, so it should be up to date.

I updated my NVidia video driver shortly after the problem appeared, thinking that might solve it.

I've updated Roxio with the latest patches.

Something that turned up when I decided to burn the "rough" version of the production to a dvd was to update DirectX 9, which I had never done before. After updating DirectX 9 through Microsoft's web site, I was then able to then render and burn a dvd. While some of the transitions worked, others didn't. I'm wondering if anything I did on the project before doing the various updates would be fixed after the updates, but it's to early to tell, as I just finished looking at the dvd on my tv.

I'm still concerned about why some features of the Roxio product are not working properly, but at least I don't need to spend $100-$200 to update the video card and I know that I'll get at least some type of presentation, although it might not be as polished as I'd like it to be.

Again, thanks for your reply.
