recommend digital TV tuner card

so I need a PCIE x1 digital TV tuner card ($100 or lower, with remote control would be nice).

i was looking at newegg and was deciding between
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116015
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815100014

when i was reading the comments, i saw one guy mention that the AVerMedia was not a digital TV tuner--you only get analog signals. i have digital cable so i would need a card that can handle the digital signals.

this perplexed me because the specifications do say "digital tv." maybe it just means it can handle digital, but you still need a converter?

this stuff is beyond the realm of my expertise. i'm just looking for a good card that i can plug in, hook up my coaxial and get my digital cable working. preferably under $100.

any recommendations appreciated. thanks.

oh, i'm running Vista Business.

What you need to receive digital cable is a card with a "ClearQAM" tuner. This will receive all digital channels that your cable provider does not scramble (IF ANY!) and are in the channel range of the tuner. You do not need ATSC, that's for "over the air" digital channels with an antenna.

Your best bet is use your digital box, then all you need is a basic card. You wouldn't even need a tuner if the digital box has component or HDMI outputs.

So I have a digital box (Time Warner DVR) which is out in the living room. The coaxial from the wall goes into the DVR and into the HDTV.

But I'm setting up this PC/TV in my room, which has the coaxial from the wall, but no additional DVR.

I wanted to avoid getting another DVR. If I'm correct, the DVR is what acts as the digital converter box?

Without another DVR, I need to buy a converter box? And then get basic TV card?

Thanks.

You may or may not need a converter. It all depends what channels the cable company passes through analog (any card can receive those) and what they give you with ClearQAM. There may be no digital at all at your jack unless the cable company turns that outlet on for digital.
