Itunes giving trouble
I've used Itunes for my music playing and burning for a few years now, and have had no issues. I recently bought a new computer, and put a newer version of Itunes on it (only one version up which is 4.9 I believe) as I don't need the Ipod software that the newest version has.
At any rate, all was working well until the last time I went to burn a CD, where Itunes now goes into a mode where it was to automatically "analyze" and starts going through the song playlist, and within a few seconds I get a Windows error message, saying "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"...with a send error report at the bottom.
I've tried rebooting many times, but that doesn't do anything, and I even tried downloading a lower version, but Itunes won't allow you to do that unfortunately, as I assume they only want you to move "up" a version, and not down, although I like the interface of the older version better.
I would like to know how I can get by the "analyzing" issue (if possible) or what I can do to rectify the issue. I just spent several days getting my playlists just as I like them too, so I'm hoping that all isn't lost.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Itunes giving trouble
The real problem is that it's older software and that iTunes has been changed as much to avoid running into problems with current software as to add features.
What that means is that, sooner or later, you were going to have problems.
If you want to try again you will have to scrub the current install from your system, you can't just try loading a lesser version over it.
Go here for a complete removal tool : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
If you decide to modernize and don't need the Ipod software in the latest version (Mobile Device Manager) you can always remove it in Add/Remove.
And you have the option of disabling Genius as well if you don't want to use it .
In fact many of the components of the current iTunes can be uninstalled leaving you with the stripped down version you prefer.
Word to the wise : BACKUP!!!

Itunes giving trouble
Thanks for the reply!
The reason I chose the older version, is that this older is the one I've had on my previous computer, which has run for 4 or 5 years with no issues! I put in on my new computer and within a month...issues!
The biggest problem (well, problematic to me) is the days...yes, days of time it takes once Itunes is installed, to get all the songs up and working on Itunes, where I then make "many" playlists with specific songs in them. So, I have Playlists with names such as "Country", "Pop", "Classical", "Alternative", "Old Memories", "Songs to Download" and on an on. This, apparently does not automatically show up when a new version is downloaded obviously, so it's more of the time issue I've put into setting up Itunes to work as I would like it....such as the way it is set up on my old (but working fine) computer.
Thanks again for your reply.

Itunes giving trouble
Why not just copy the library database file (In addition to the iTunes Music folder) so you don't lose your play lists ?
How are you going about backing up iTunes?

Hmmm....what do you recommend Pam? I do have an external hard drive, which I use for backing up files, but by what you are saying, "backing" up Itunes may be not as ordinary as just backing up the whole Itunes file folder?
Sorry for the time delay, as I just got back from vacation, but tried using Itunes again, and soon after the first song started playing, the same old error message reared it's ugly head!
I may just upload (eventually) the newest version and remove what I don't need (as you mention above).
Thanks, and any help in doing a proper backup of Itunes would be appreciated.
Thanks!

There are two articles you need to read :
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/art...new-hard-drive
I manage by leaving the data base on my 'C' drive and moving the music folder to the 'F' drive I installed just for it following the instructions.
After that it was easy to back up 'F' to my usb hard drive and I use Synctoy for updates : http://www.pchell.com/support/synctoy.shtml
Which means that after the initial hassle it only take a few minutes each time I back up 'F'.
The itl. file gets backed up with my 'C' drive.
Unless you already have a full back up of your iTunes folder I would do that first following the Apple instructions and then I would make a separate back up of the itl files.
iTunes gives you a choice and it's possible the latest file was corrupted so you may need to go back to an earlier one, the one before the trouble started.
It's possible a restore point might have saved you the hassle but then again, maybe not.
Apple support has similar incidents posted but it's impossible to tell what caused them so restores work sometimes and sometimes not.
You're going to have to "scrub" iTunes from your system, including any stray Quicktime folders lurking in programs and you may need to use this : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
I've had no problems with the latest version of iTunes on XP SP3 .

Itunes giving trouble
I'll give this a try, but wanted to thank you for the above information, as I truly enjoy using Itunes, but this latest issue is the first I've come across.
Itunes WAS working perfectly, and this issue came up "all of a sudden" so I'm not sure on the possibility of corruption, but will assume that's the problem.
Thanks again!
